Root ROOTING For Dummies

Well crap, I did a backup before I wiped... tried to restore to the backup and it just gets hung up on the HTC EVO screen. The white one with black letters when you first turn it on.

1) What is your hboot version?
2) What is your recovery version?
3) Have you updated your radios (if you had to)?
4) If you did, did you before or after making your last nandroid backup?

2) ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1
3) Yes, I am on 2.15.00.11.19
4) Before

Ok, so you upgraded the radio, but you did it before making your last nandroid backup that you're now trying to restore? Or was the nandroid backup made before you upgraded the radios?

EDIT: Just a quick thing you can try. Wipe cache and dalvik cache, then see if it will boot up.

After I couldn't get Gingerbread to work a few days ago, I flashed Supersonic_3.70.651.1-Deodexed_signed_teshxx.zip, then I flashed the upgraded radios. That is what I made a backup of before I tried again to flash Gingerbread today.

Got it. So now when you try to restore it, it just sits at the splash screen? Like I said above, try wiping cache/dalvik really quick. If that doesn't help, you can try reflashing the ROM without wiping data. Maybe something was wrong before you made the nandroid backup, and you never noticed. It can happen.

We can figure out why CM isn't flashing in a bit, but it'd probably be a good idea to get everything up and running first.

Okay, wiping cache & dalvik didn't do the trick, but I was able to restore the backup I made on the 15'th, right after I first flashed the Supersonic_3.70.651.1-Deodexed_signed_teshxx.zip ROM.

Well, there you go. Something you did between making that nandroid backup and the one that wouldn't restore caused a problem. Not sure if you'll remember or not, but did you ever try to boot up after making that last nandroid backup? I've had issues where something went wrong, but I didn't know it until I tried to reboot, and got stuck at the splash screen. Restoring a previous nandroid backup OR flashing the current ROM without wiping data usually fixes such issues (but not always). That's why I suggested flashing the ROM again without wiping data. Of course, going to back to a previous nandroid backup worked for you, so that's good.

I've rebooted several times, even once this afternoon. I have two batteries and I keep one on the charger until the other one is close to death, then I swap them out. It hasn't had any problems booting up until now.

As far as gingerbread is concerned, why don't you try switching to Amon RA recovery for the time being. I can't find a whole lot of information about your specific error, but I think it might be related to something with clockwork. You can use ROM manager to flash RA (alternate recovery). Once you do, make at least one nandroid backup with RA so that you don't get stuck without a recoverable backup if the ROM still won't flash. If you need more instructions on this, let me know.

Well, I switched to Amon RA and it installed Gingerbread without error. It finally did get past the htc EVO screen, but now it is back to where it is stuck on the android screen. The glare moves across the letters, then the screen flashes. Rinse and repeat.

Uh oh. I'm trying to restore the backup I made with Amon RA, and I get, "Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!"

Sounds like you're in a bootloop. Now that you have gapps, did you try flashing it at the same time? If you did, make sure you flash just the ROM without gapps, first. If not, perhaps you have a bad download. Did you ever try downloading it again?

Is there more to the error than that? That's not very descriptive.

Werd, I finally have root. I've spent the last two days trying to root with all the other guides but kept getting hung up in certain spots, abd not recognised, main version older, all that stuff. This is the most straightforward, concise approach with no hiccups for me at all, figures whatever I need is always in the last place I look. I think what I was missing in other methods was the drivers mentioned here in step2-section2, they either weren't mentioned elsewhere or I just missed it repeatedly - also waiting for unrevoked to ask for the phone to be plugged in was missing from other guides and it was just hanging when pushing the zip.

Thanks for this great writeup! :D

BTW Matlock, just wanted to give you a little update. I flashed 6.1.2 cyanogen mod and it's pretty bad ass. :D Fast! Also got the radio updated just fine, I noticed it was a little choppy on my rooted stock htc rom.

Still trying to figure out some of the navigation stuff and get my apps back.

Any quick tips for some cool customization? I am reading through the thread on xda developer website, but good lord it has like 1200 pages or so. Thanks again for the help and information. I'll probably play with this one for awhile and make a backup and then play around with another. Love having this control over my phone!

Yeah, I erased the old copy and re-downloaded before I started. I didn't ever flash gapps, just wiped data, wiped cache, wiped dalvick and flashed the ROM.

That's what I thought, too. But no, that was all it said.

I re-flashed the 3.70 stock ROM, then went back to ClockworkMod Recovery and re-flashed my backup from 1/15, so I'm back to where I started the day out yesterday. I don't know, maybe I'm better off waiting until the next update to this ROM is available, or trying a different Gingerbread ROM.

Yeah, try a different gingerbread ROM. Let's see if you get errors with that. Do you need help finding another one? There are several out there.

Matlock, are you having any problems disabling 3G Data connection? I can't seem to get mine turned off on CM7 build 5. I'm flashing to build 6 right now, maybe it's fixed there.

I can't access the CyanogenMod forums from work so If anyone wants to chat about it in here... I'm OK with it.

You can use any of those. I know there are others, and I can go find them if you need. You're out of luck with sense, though. You're going to have to wait until HTC actually releases gingerbread for the Evo. Until then, it's AOSP or nothing.

Well it depends on how extreme you want to go. Theme is probably the most extreme, without going into Frying up some Kitchen ROMs. But I know nothing about themes (YET!).

thanks im new to this and i was able to folow ur directions for root and i berly speak and read inglish keep the good work

You are very welcome!

Hmmm.. Can't find any way to turn off 3G.. The 2G/3G option doesn't work. It never works anyway. lol
I keep track of the CyanogenMod forums regularly. But it ain't very active on the EVO section. lol
