Root ROOTING For Dummies

I flashed CM7 RC1 and my internet stopped working and it constantly drops phone calls any reason for this?? i had to flash back to stock it was annoying other than that the features are nice.

Edit: Re-flash musta been that Solar Flare from last night even my stock rom was roaming in an area i get full coverage.

I understand your opinion in staying away from SBC but I promise you won't regret the 4.2.2 SBC more HAVS from Netarchy. I am using it and Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5 flawlessly. I've tried many of different kernels and ROMS and this combination I keep coming back to.

Saleen, do you still recommend this kernal? Or is there a new updated version from them that you would choose? I am looking for more battery life and no running problems.

And is the one you listed this one?

If your OK with SBC (Superior Battery Charging - Trickle Charging) then yes, I do. Be sure that you are on an HTC Sense ROM such as Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo, Sprint Lovers, Stock.

I still use this ROM. I find that 1.15 is a comfortable speed for me that is consistently reliable. Adjusting settings in SETCPU will override the clockspeeds of a Kernel. If your on the stock kernel you cannot overclock.. only underclock.

Thanks, so simple. *shakes head* lol

Ok I am ex[eroemced some pretty bad battery life, and it took me a little bit to figure out that I had to go back and do all those little tweaks I did originally to my phone when I first got it etc etc. But its still not spectacular.

I started messing around with SetCPU and realized I needed to read. So I started.

Questions...

1) Will those settings in SetCPU override whatever settings those custom rom's/Kernals have? I would be inclined to think I shouldn't mess with the settings that those have built in?

2) Does Mikfroyo 4.5 use the stock kernal? If I use SetCPU I disable perf lock if its a stock kernal correct? If its a custom one it has it disabled already?

3) How can I check to see if I have the latest wiMax radios? I see my Baseband Version, PRI, PRL etc etc Just no WiMax. I have the current of those, but want to make sure of my 4g as its a bit spotty now.

4) When I make an NAND backup does it overwrite past NAND backups or can I always go back to anyone I make? For example if I make a nand of my mikfroyo rom will that now overwrite my origonal nand I did when I backed up my phone before and after I rooted?

5) I have also noted that I cannot get the internet to work correctly on my computer using the wifi tethering unless I have the 4g on. It use to connect and then loses connection when the phone goes into sleep. Now I connect and i get limited access on 3g, but no problems with 4g on (other than battery drain).

2. I beleive it does use the Stock Kernel. I always attempt to disable perflock either way. It won't hurt you for trying.

3. Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Info

4. No, the NAND will create a completely new full back up as long as you rename it. You will always be able to use previous NANDs unless you change recoveries from ClockWorkMod to Amon RA or vice versa.

5. Search for a Version of Wifi Tethering such as Pre 9 or 11. I am still using Pre 9 and found it to work the best for me.

I am on mikfroyo, from what I read its a sense rom so I should be good. I ally don't think I want to overclock the phone, I'm really looking for battery life.

I don't see anything listed under software info about wimax radios. Is it labeled something else?

Do I need to manually rename the nand backups? Our does clockwork do it all? Also when I wipe davlik and wipe everything like instructions say does that erase my backups?

is there a way i can get any .apks? i need my imusic app and my nubinews reader both have been removed from the market since i've downloaded and can't use unless i go back to stock :/.

I believe that I'm rooted, but I don't think that clockworkMod got installed.
(I have S-off, but does not boot clockworkMod when selecting recovery.)

unrevoked did not not appear to finish, but instead hung in waiting for reboot.
Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to proceed until I can get a
clean nand backup. Thanks in advance.

Device build number: 3.29.651.5 CL252548 release-keys

I realized that I was playing with some Android development in another MacOSX Space. Once I closed out of that, I was able to get unrevoked to run to completion.

Ok, searched the thread but didn't find anything conclusive. Are the steps given in the first post still the correct procedure to use on a laptop running ubuntu?

I used this guide and rooted with unrevoked3 and created a nandroid backup. What would be the best way to get mikfroyo on my evo? Super new to this.

Go here and read through the first 4 posts of that thread. Then flash and feel free to ask in that thread, they are a lot of help! But be sure to read the first 4 posts prior to asking. The ROM is awesome.

Here's a pic of my home screen.

I can't express my gratitude enough for the amount of thanks received by this single thread. lol I may not post a lot, but when I do.. It's huge! rofl

Hopefully here in a few days this post will hit 100k plus views as well.

I am trying to get back into the groove of updates to the thread, but have had little time. Work has called forth more effort than usual.

If your a Manager of any sort, I recommend a read by David Cottrell called Monday Morning Leadership: 8 Mentoring Sessions You Can't Afford to Miss.

You can get it on Amazon for $15 bucks. Pretty cheap for the insightful information.

New to the site. Tried looking for what I was looking for in this section but i haven't found it. Figured I'd ask. Hopefully I can finally get a fix for this.

I'm trying to update to 3.70.651.1 (58.11 MB) -FOTA update

I'm pretty sure my EVO is rooted. When i reboot the phone and hold volume and power I get the white screen. What it says at the top is
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.76.2000 (PC36100000)
MICROP-041F
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16AB
RADIO-2.15.00.07.28
MAR 30 2010, 11:24:04

So question is. How would I be able to get 3.70.651.1 (58.11 MB) -FOTA update onto my phone? Or something like it? Whenever I just try to install it. I always get a black screen. Then a picture of an android with a triangle behind him. Never goes threw. Any advice? I'm new to all of this. Please bear with me

Welcome to the forums :). You can't accept an OTA while rooted because you have a custom recovery. The OTA and custom recovery images are not compatible. In theory, you could flash the stock recovery, then accept the OTA update. In your case, your phone would be fully unrooted, as you have S-OFF via the eng bootloader, and (presumably) not unrevoked. That is, of course, unless you rooted with unrevoked, then downgraded to the eng bootloader later. In any case, a much better option is to flash a stock or custom ROM based on the 3.70 OTA along with the updated radios. Take a look at section 6 under after rooting in the OP. You will find instructions for the updating correctly. Once again, never try to accept an OTA while rooted.

Thanks. I found the section 6. When I read it. I just get very confused. There seems to be knowledge there that I don't know about. Easier way for me to read it?

That's ok :). Let me see if I can clarify it for you a bit. An OTA update will include the following:

1) A new boot image - this includes things like the new included kernel, and anything else required by the system to boot up.

2) A new system image - this is the actual ROM, as in Android System itself. When you see that your software version is 3.70.651.1, that means your ROM, which exists in the /system image, is based on that version.

3) An hboot image - this is basically your bootloader. When this gets updated, you will lose root if your root method was via the eng bootloader. If your root method was unrevoked, you'll keep S-OFF, but previous nandroid backups will no longer work. If there is no root exploit for a particular new hboot yet, if anything goes wrong, you could get in trouble.

4) A recovery image - You need a custom recovery to take advantage of full root. You can't accept an OTA update while rooted, anyway, as this is used as a part of the update, to begin with. In any case, this is the stock recovery, and is useless to you while you have root.

5) The stock splash screen - this is the initial white screen you see when you turn the phone on.

6) A new radio image - this is a new firmware version for your radio. For best results, you should run the latest radio version, ROM version, and kernel version together. Any other combination could be either unbootable or unstable. For example, updating the radio version, but not updating the ROM or kernel will result in not being able to boot. You *could* use a custom kernel to boot, but you might still have instability.

7) PRI and NV images - PRI, especially, has the same warnings as the radio. Don't use a newer PRI, and an older ROM/kernel. Sometimes you need to use an older PRI with a newer ROM, though, if you have battery life issues.

8) Wimax radio image - this updates your wimax radio version.

We also have these things called RUUs. An RUU is a ROM Update Utility, and it contains basically the same thing as a normal OTA update. The only difference is that an RUU will include an almost empty data image. What that means is that if you update via an OTA update, you'll get all the above images, but your apps, data, and settings stay in tact. If you update with an RUU (or a PC36IMG.zip file that includes the contents of an RUU), you get the same thing, but it wipes out your apps, data, and settings. (To those reading this who might care, you can pull whatever images you want out of a PC36IMG.zip file, so if you wanted to keep data while flashing a PC36IMG.zip RUU, just pull out userdata.img, for example).

All of this is to say that if you update via an OTA update or an RUU, you update too much while you have root. You don't want to do that. All you need while rooted are the new radio images (radio, wimax, pri, nv) and a system image. Now, as you have root, if you updated with a system image from an RUU (OTA update, basically), you would lose root in your ROM. That's not a huge deal, as you can flash whatever you want with S-OFF, but there's little point in wasting your time with that. So, you need to flash the radios (as a package or separately), then flash a rooted ROM based on the new OTA, whether it be a custom ROM or stock one that has been rooted.

If you read those instructions in section 6, you will find links for both of those things. In doing so, you will note that you will not be updating recovery, hboot, the splash screen (always the same with stock), or an entire boot image. You need to keep your custom recovery, and as stated before, updating hboot is bad (unroots if rooted via eng bootloader, and makes nandroid backup useless no matter what rooting method you used). As for the boot image, a custom ROM will include the boot image it needs.

If you are just on stock, there is another option. There is a link in the instructions to flash something called Sprint Lovers ROM, via PC36IMG.zip. That is basically everything you need, as it is basically a RUU, minus the recovery and hboot updates, and a rooted stock ROM in place of the unrooted stock one. It will include all necessary radio updates. If you go that route, it's assumed you want to stick with a close to stock ROM. Otherwise, it's faster to update the radios manually, then flash whatever ROM you like.

I'm sure you still have questions about this, so feel free to ask if anything is still not clear.

Well, I think I did it right. I did everything I had read to do. (Least I hope so) Everything seems to be working well. How do I know that I now have the latest update? OR how do I know everything seems to be working right? I did notice something I've never had on the phone before. If I hold power off. I have a new option. "Reboot" Which I know wasn't there before. Is this normal?

It's normal if the ROM you flashed included it. It's not a stock thing. What method did you end up going with to update? In any case, you can verify all is well by going to menu->settings->about phone->software information. Reply with the following:

1) Baseband version
2) Kernel version
3) Software number
4) PRI Version

EDIT: Oh, and go ahead and reboot into hboot again, and verify you still have hboot 0.76 and S-OFF (no reason why you wouldn't, but check anyway).

Almost. You're half way there. You flashed an update ROM (Steel ROM), but you still need to update the radios. If you go back to the instructions, one of the steps is to flash a combo radio update from recovery. You're technically supposed to do that at the same time as the ROM, as you're probably going to have some instability. It doesn't matter too much. It's usually having newer radios and an older ROM that causes problems. Follow those instructions to flash the radio update, and you'll be done. Once you have, please reply with that same information. You should have the newer radio versions at that point.

Also, did you make a nandroid backup before starting, as you should before flashing anything? It would be a good idea.

Does it look ok now?
