Root Rooting for Ice Cream Sandwich?

Hello there!

We have many great guides on how to root the device. After it is rooted you can put whatever version of android on there that you want.

You need to pull the battery out of your phone, put it back in, and then hold power+voume down and give us your H-boot #

If its 2.18 you need:

You have gingerbread on the phone now correct?

You gain root access first and then put on any version of Android you want. The guides I posted are correct for the listed h-boots. Check yours and find out what guide you need.
 
The OG doesn't have ICS. Also rooting isn't determined by the ROM its determined by the Hboot. There is really an unfair association with the two. When Sprint / HTC introduced Gingerbread they introduced a new Hboot 2.15 I do believe it was. So most guides will associate this as Gingerbread. However Hboot has been updated since that to 2.18 yet its still Gingerbread Software. So the Latest Hboot for the OG is 2.18 Since we are not going to "Officially" get ICS we will have to wait for the devs to finish with its development. AOSP is the only ones offering an ICS for the EVO at this point. The Evo 4g Design is supposed to get updated but as of yet it has not.
 
They're trying to tell you that you can root your phone, and then put ice cream sandwich on it if you'd like. The roms are cook, but not super stable yet. So follow the direction.s they're giving you, they are correct.
 
ok I just got a evo design 4g for boost it comes with ics on it. How do I root my phone? I've had a lil bit of exp. I rooted my last phone a zte warp without to many hold ups so a point and a push in the right direction would be helpful.

Heya, this particular all things root forum is for the EVO 4G. The design forums should have their own directions for how to root.

Rooting is a very phone specific problem so I would suggest checking out their forums here:

My hboot is 6.16.1002 and i'm rooted with revolutionary.. so what can i do to update and change my rom?

You simply download an ics ROM, put it on the sd card, boot into recovery, wipe everything except sd card at least once, and then flash the ROM.

It is suggested to make a nandroid before wiping.

ok so please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and go to the after root section. it has tons of info including how to flash roms and about ota's among other things. also i would suggest that you switch to amon ra 2.3 if you have not already. the instructions on how to do it is in the guide as well.

so to basically answer your question, all you will need to do is flash a rom. roms are software and any of the android os updates are just software as well. so by just flashing a rom you will be updated to whatever android os you want.

now ics will never come to the evo officially. but we have very talented devs still developing on our very old evos. and thanx to them we now have ics available. just keep in mind they are aosp roms which means they do not have the sense overlay. also they are almost there as far as stability, but some may have small issues still.

that is for the evo lte. the og evo will never get ICS officially. but we have some awesome devs who have ICS working for the og evo.

ok, i understand now. to me, evo is evo, is evo! LOL well, that's not quite true. :D i do know the differences. i just know i have the greatest phone on the planet!

anywho, is there rooting for the lte? i have the og evo and would really like to upgrade, but not until i can root. i know i can get ics on my og, based on your last comment, but i don't wanna do that right now.

Yes, rooting the EVO LTE is very simple. Our devs have made a 1 click program that does the HTC dev unlock for you. You can do everything with an unlocked but S-ON EVO LTE bootloader that you can do with S-off for the EVO.


My LTE is rooted and I haven't looked back since.
 
that's good to hear. one question, though...i am no brainiac when it comes to rooting. i can do it, and have done it to all of my evo's and others. however, i thought s-off is what you wanted instead of s-on. is s-off not the preferred status?

Yes, s-off is preferred but HTC now has the HTC dev website that unlocks your bootloader and allows you to put a custom recovery on the device without s-off. Since HTC is providing the root method devs don't need to look for s-off.

Being rooted with s-on for the OG EVO causes you to nit be able to do some things, but HTC designed the EVO LTE to be able to do everything with s-on
