Root Rooting from stock 2.2

So if I want to root my HBOOT 0.92 Desire and have stock FroYo, i'll need to..

1. Backup valuable stuff on phone (Any suggestions what program to use?)
2. Downgrade to 2.1 with HBOOT 0.80 (link here)
3. Root that?
4. Flash the rooted stock froyo to the phone
5. Get stuff from backup..
6. Enjoy my rooted froyo
????

Just making sure, don't want to mess things up :)

Yep except for the fact that I haven't come across any 2.2 Rom (stock or custom) that is as stable (in ALL departments) as the OTA 2.2 ...

Please.don't take this the wrong way.but something went wrong on your root procedure.

All the roms I've tried have been more stable than stick, especially the one you tried.

See I'm with Sam on this one I think.

LeeDroid seems stable enough but it's also noticeably slower than the stock froyo ROM I had that was unrooted. It also seems to have an impact on battery usage, not a lot but I have noticed a slightly faster drain. I'll have to keep checking over the next few days before I can say for sure but it does seem a little worse.

It all just seems a bit... I dunno, of an anticlimax? I spent almost all day trying to get this to work on Saturday fully expecting to be blown away by the new amazing capabilities of my rooted Desire. But I'm just not...

What else should I do? Am I missing something??

Dan, since the time I learnt how to fiddle around with Roms (with your help ofcourse) I have tried 2 Custom ROMS and one rooted stock 2.2, and all gave me problems (small ..... minor but yes...they were there) .......

This is the stock ROM I tried .... after (MoDaCoa and that Cryogen ...something)

[ROM] Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM - xda-developers

If you go through the entire thread (all pages), you will notice, leaving the first couple of pages, its not only me but other as well who start facing problems (minor or major) after upgrading to Rooted 2.2 rom ........ My point is its not "perfect"........... if you get the advantage of rooting you also loose stability on certain aspects like unnecessary force restart, camera giving buzzing sound while taking snaps ....etc ......(with me Gallery was not opening.... I mean it was random, sometime it would and sometime it wont)

OTA 2.2 is flawless in every respect (how so ever minor it maybe) and that is what I want ....... Just rooting does not create problem but loading ROM does (well atleast for 30-40% users.... maybe less), and that is the reason I am waiting someone to come up with Rooting OTA 2.2 ....

d.knight thats exactly what happened with me, I was expecting wonders after loading custom ROM, but was bitterly dissappointed, I also gave the benifit of the doubt and tried another Custom ROM and an rooted official one as well, but all gave problems in some or the other department ....

Yeah... bit disappointed really.

Tried Cyanogen Mod 6 - didn't like it. LeeDroid is OK I guess but I'm gonna have a go with a rooted stock 2.2 ROM tonight and see how it goes. If I don't like it I'm going back to the official unrooted version I think.

But hey, at least we've given it a go!

Thanks guys, it's downloading as I type, will update in a few hours when I've had a play!

Hi, I'm a happy and new desire owner! I didn't try any of the customs ROMs, but I like the stock one a lot, except for the fonts and a few more small details. As I undestood, with rooted stock I could change the fonts so can't wait to tell us how was your experience....

UPDATE:

Rooted stock ROM is excellent. Slicker than two eels shagging in a bucket of snot!

It's also possible to flash UI tweaks just as you would with other ROM's, so I've flashed the LeeDroid battery icon and notification bar and stuff so it's all good! Looks like LeeDroid but isn't laggy as hell! Very, very happy with this now.

Err I'm not actually sure about fonts, never tried to do it myself. Might have a go later and post the results. Got a couple of other things I wanna do first though.

Check out this tutorial, it will tell you everything you need to know. I assume it will work with any rooted ROM, so give it a go and let us know how you get on. Remember to back up first though

Can you check each and every department, specially audio/video stuff, you know camera, gallery, video recording, switching from wifi to 3G and vice versa and stuff like that, basically put your phone to test and see if the ROM behaves stable in all departments .....

Yeah sure.

Well I don't actually have many MP3 files at all so I have no idea about music and stuff, but video and camera seems absolutely fine, wi-fi and 3G switches as it should phone calls, texts, browsing etc are all fine. I'll put the nav on when I leave work later and just give that a quick test.

It will take me a few more days to really get to see everything and fully test the ROM but the signs so far are all good!

Seems like unrevoked is about to root any desire at all. Possibly with S-Off (deeper root as far as I can tell) goodness for GSM users. CDMA have S-Off, once they put the links back up and fix the bug.

God Damm thats good news ..:) I have been waiting for this for like ages .....actually its been just a couple of days but seems like ages as I did not want to install rooted 2.2. I was waiting to get the official 2.2 rooted ........
though the tools has been revoked from the site for now (for some bug) but it seems we are getting there ...... a day or two may be and we should have OTA froyo 2.2 rooted ....yeaaaa!!!

Rooting stock froyo and installing pre-rooted stock froyo is basically the same thing. It's just a bit quicker.

^^ Yes, but for what ever reason my phone seems to dislike, both the custom and rooted 2.2, atleast the first one (didnt try the latest one) ....... so I rolled back to OTA 2.2 ........ and waiting for it to be rooted ........ :-)

Sam, give the one suggested above a go, the plain stock 2.2. If 2.2 is working for you then the rooted version will be fine if installed properly. It was for me anyway!

Just managed to remove almost 30MB of unused system apps from my device! Anyone know if it's safe to get rid of the stock messaging app and replace it with handcent? No reason to have both. I've already got rid of all the sense widgets but I was also wondering if it's safe to get rid of the sense launcher completely too? Might be risky if anything happens to LP.

No, handcent isn't a 100% replacement. It still relies on the built in messaging services.

not if you dont want to down grade your hboot
I dont want to work backwards and downgrade my hboot when i know someone will have a solution for the newer bootloaders

Knight I would have taken the suggestion, but it seems developers are almost there rooting OTA 2.2, So I think its better to wait a day or to rather than take the pain of backing up everything and then follow up the long procedure of loading rooted 2.2 ........

exactly ...... and also take the risk of bricking up your SLCD, I am also preferring to wait .....
