Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Hey guys,

So I tried to root my samsung galaxy s2 i9100 2.3.3 on odin, but I've done something wrong and the yellow triangle keeps appearing when I try to turn it on.

I can access recovery and download.

I think I have to flash a siyah kernel through odin to get it going but am uncertain which one or where to get it.

Could not find one on sammobile.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums nikkib7854! :)

Have you tried the wipe mentioned in post #1?

Are you sure that you used the correct CF-Root kernel that matched your original stock kernel details, as per post #1? Could you post your original, stock, kernel details and the details of the kernel you used to root in case there is a mis-match.

I don't think I used to right CF, that is why this happened.

I also followed the instructions from a different website not this one!

the CF was CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5

I am not certain what the kernal was beforehand, and stupidly can't check it now, such a n00b!

Oh dear!

Here we go... We need to flash a stock firmware for you in that case, to get you up and running and to be able to re-root.

I'm guessing that you don't have your CSC code details and so all we can do, as you cannot boot up, is to flash a generic, stock, Samsung, firmware to your phone.

Was your phone running carrier branded firmware?

Which country are you in?

Do you need a language other than English?

Living in Australia

Don't need another language to english

It was locked to Optus,

This is the stock Optus firmware, Android 4.0.4, for the GT-i9100. You will need to download this and flash it with Odin, following the instructions under the heading, "My firmware is not eligible for ICS yet but I want it now!", in post #1, here.

This will put the Optus, ICS, firmware on your phone with a stock un-rooted kernel. You can then follow the steps in post #1 and #2 of this thread to root.

I was trying to root it to unlock it!

Rooting does not unlock your phone.

Awesome, I'll give that a go.

Ah ok, I was told rooting was like jailbreaking. Needs to be done before u can unlock it

No, you were told wrong I'm afraid. You will need to either obtain the unlock code from your service provider or take it to your friendly local mobile phone shop.

Sorry again, my phone is fixed now, but after flashing that firmware my phone has reverted to this..

samsung galaxy s2 GT-i19100

I'm trying to Root it now but because of these details am having trouble. I did notice in post http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-international-all-things-root/627235-rooting-4-0-4-a.html

Ironass you said to try LPW I can't seem to find a CF Root for that, only the firmware u just gave me. Any ideas where I can find this?

Hey guys,

I've been running Siyah 5.0.1 with Vanilla Rootbox, but I wanted to see if I could get better battery performance under 4.1.4 as tha was what I was getting the best batterylife on before, however, when I flashed the kernel now it doesn't boot. Just gets to the gok logo then blank. I can get to Recovery, but that's about it.

Any ideas?

Edit: It appears that Rootbox flashes its own kernel. So I'm assuming there is no way of getting a siyah kernel to work with this rom?

Hi

I am using Rootbox 3.2, and also Dorimanx Kernel.

After flashing the ROM, I then flash the kernel in recovery before restarting the phone.

Boots up fine on Dorimanx.

You may want to give this kernel a try, as it has lots of battery tweaks.

odd. you seem to be doing everything right

you have unzipped the CF-kernel file yes??

ok after giving it a break i have tried rooting my s2 again.

i am using lpt kernal and odin 3. after pressing start odin runs but then it says it fails.

the message window in odin says

<id:0/010> complete(write) operation failed

i just want launch my s2 and laptop against the wall.

please please help. im desperate here.

Oh dear!

Can I just check that you have...

Step 1.

Ensure that your phone is fully charged.

On your phone, go to... Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging and check the box.

(On ICS ROM's.. Settings > Developer options > USB debugging and check the box)

and that you are turning light blue...

Step 3.

Connect your phone, still in Download mode, to the PC using the USB lead. If you have successfully connected to Odin you should see the ID:COM box in Odin turn yellow or light blue, (depending on which version of Odin you are using).

Hi, I am really new to the rooting subject, so I am worried because there's a chance to cause some damage and I really need to do this because I have to record some videos of the Smartphone screen with Screencast that requires root.

Smartphone model: Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100UHLB2-CL966147
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UHLB2

What CF-Root do I choose?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Android Forums BrnTsw! :)

The UHLB2, Gingerbread, build is very old, February 2012, by Android standards and there has been an update for your CSC code, which I guess is ZTO, in May 2012, to ICS, Android 4.0.3.

Since there is no CF-Root kernel to match your existing, stock, kernel of LB2, you could upgrade your firmware, using either the Samsung Kies PC Suite or Odin to the latest Android 4.0.3 and then match the new stock kernel with a CF-Root version.

Thanks!

Well here's the thing, I'm developing an application that is olny being tested on Android version 2.3, so I'm not sure if it's gonna work on ICS. There's no other way? If there isn't, if I install the ICS, is it easy to re-install Gingerbread if I need? Sorry for this questions, but I have to finish recording the videos of my app tomorrow.

You could try using CF-Root kernel LA4. That may work for you.

If you move up to ICS you will have to manually flash your existing Gingerbread firmware, UHLB2, after first doing a Factory Reset and a re-installation of all your app's and settings.

You could try rooting with the LA4 CF-Root kernel and if that does not work you will have to flash your existing firmware, with it's stock, un-rooted, kernel, using Odin.

Thanks man

I just updated my firmware, now the kernel version is 3.0.15-I9100VJLP7-CL371396 and base number IML74KVJLP7

Sounds like you may need to re-calibrate your battery.

Just double checking...

Could you post your, "Version", details...

Tip: Now is a good time to make a note of your phone's, "Version" in case you ever need to revert back from rooting. To do this, open the dial pad and type in the following:- *#1234#

This will give you 4 lines of information about your phones firmware and CSC code, etc: You should make a careful note of all this information and keep it somewhere safe.

and your original, stock, kernel details...

Kernel. Your choice of CF-Root kernel depends on the kernel you currently have installed on your phone.

Settings > About phone > Kernel version (make a note of this in case of problems)
