Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Hello ThePunisher102 and welcome to Android Forums! :)

once you are rooted there are two main forms of Back-up...

Titanium Backup Pro for App's, data and settings.

Nandroid which is a complete mirror image of your phone and can be done via CWM Manager.

This excellent article, by our very own AndroidNZ, explains, step-by-step, how to do them and their uses:-

AndroidNZ: [At Your Own Risk] How to Root your Samsung Galaxy S II

Hope this helps.

Thank you for a brilliant and easy to follow guide to rooting. I was successful, but one thing. I cannot see Busy Box in the Apps? Thanks a lot if you can assist!

Welcome to the forum RogerF and thanks for joining.

Busybox won't show up as an app. It just runs in the background when needed.

We have too many important and useful threads in this forum to sticky them all individually so the link is in our all things root sticky.

Hi guys ive downloaded the kernal i need from here [16.02.2012][CF-Root 5.2] K/EFGHIJKL*, KP1/2/4/8/A, LA2/4, LP1/2/6/B/H -su+bb+CWM4/5 - xda-developers
GT-I9100_XWKL1_insecure but when i go to extract to( here) its says password protected-is this correct?i thought i needed the tar file.:(

The .zip file you downloaded only needs to be extracted once.

This is the file that you require and contains the.zip/.tar file that you need to show up in Odin.

Download the .zip file to your desktop and unzip it to extract another .zip file contained inside it, (To extract the file, just right click on it and select 7-Zip/WinRAR/Winzip and, "Extract here". This extracted file is the one you will need.). This is the CF-Root .zip TAR file that contains the kernel that will root your phone. To avoid confusion you can now delete the original .zip file that it came with.

Hope this helps.

You have checked that the kernel you need is KL1 and you have gone to post #8 here:-

[16.02.2012][CF-Root 5.2] K/EFGHIJKL*, KP1/2/4/8/A, LA2/4, LP1/2/6/B/H -su+bb+CWM4/5 - xda-developers

and you have downloaded the .zip archive file for the kernel you require, KL1, from here:-

CF-Root Download

You have then extracted the file it contains, CF-Root-SGS2_XW_INU_KL1-v5.0-CWM5. This should be an 8.00MB WinRAR.tar file and is the one you need to root with Odin3 v1.85.

EDIT

The KL1 does indeed seem to be broken

Try using the KL3 instead.

Hope this helps! :D

(my thanks to Shottie for spotting this! ;) )

You only need to extract once.

It would seem that you have extracted the zimage file by doing a second extraction.

You need the WinRAR archive (.tar) file.

Thanks for help guys,no doubt will need some more when i root, just a bit of advice the ics update is due shortly is it best to root after this or now, or will rooting effect on update?
:)

You won't be able to update to ics with kies once you are rooted but you will be able to flash ics firmware with Odin before most carriers officially release it anyway. There will also be loads of custom ics roms you can choose from. So I would root now.

Will get all the info i need first, just got the phone a few days ago and still exploring, once im ready will root, like to have everything ready for when i do,thanks again.:)
