Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Will it still work if I have Windows 8? I also got stuck on the part where you create the .tar file, and when I tried it didn't work. Help please? Also my phones model is SGH-T989 will it work?

Will work with Windows 8, but your model might not be...double check the first page on this thread to see if your device is supported otherwise you may have to check the other threads!

Anyway doing this without kies installed? My internet is down for another week just picked this phone up yesterday and need to custom rom this baby :D

Could you go to Settings > About phone > Model number and say which model you have?

I thought as much. As per post #1...

This guide is for rooting the Samsung Galaxy S2, GT-i9100, GT-i9100M, GT-i9100T & GT-i9100P only and no other variant.***

If you are unsure of the model of your phone, go to Settings > About phone > Model number

You appear to have the Samsung Epic 4G Touch phone judging from your model version. The forum for that is Epic 4G Touch - All Things Root.

Hi can someone help me i bought second hand sg2 :D which is locked to t-mobile uk:mad: and want to unlock it so i can use a vodafone uk sim, i been told to unlock it youself been told, i need to root the phone then unlock it using an app in the market.

Im following the excellent guide but the phone has been reset to factory default which is 2.3.3 gingerbread but should i connect to kies and update to ics as t-mobile not relased j.b (which i want but i cant get), then root and unlock it, also if i update to ics via kies will my kernal version change.Downloaded BOKE3 insecure file will this change if i update to ics will i need to get new insecure firmware or can i use I9100BOKE3. csc: I9100TMUKE3...... i hope this makes sense.

Hello and welcome

You can update to ics first if you wish, but if you do you will need to change the kernel you use to root.to root ics you will have to use the siyah kernel as suggested by ironass in the first/second post. Good luck and before doing anything, read and read again just to make sure you follow the guide properly :-)

Hello and welcome to Android Forums candy123! :wavey:

I think that the quickest and easiest way forward forward for you is to flash the latest Samsung stock Jelly Bean, unbranded, firmware for the UK...

I9100XWLSW_I9100XEULS5_XEU.zip

by following the step-by-step instructions and video that are in the link of #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide.

Once you are on Jelly Bean you can root by flashing the kernel in #1.8 of post #1 of this thread.

You can then set about unlocking your phone using the apps from the Play Store.

Once unlocked, you may choose to install a custom Jelly Bean ROM such as NEAT ROM full or lite for LSW.

Thank you also for your help Ironass, am glad i hit the link in EE forum, couple more question if you dont mind, the purpose for me rooting my sg2 is to unlock it and if lucky getting stock J.B which is good enough for me, so therefore am i right in saying if download I9100XWLSW_I9100XEULS5_XEU.zip and used odin to flash to my phone will this be open to all network or will it still be locked to a network. My educated guess is, if this is a samsung stock j.b uk then it should be open as the current kernal should be overwritten....or am i talking rubbish.

The latter I'm afraid.

Whilst the firmware itself is unbranded, (no carrier bloatware), the kernel or firmware has nothing to do with a sim lock which is why I included it as a separate step in my reply to you. ;)

#2.0. Rooting procedure

Just to recap. You should by now have installed Samsung Kies and Odin on your PC and be able to connect via your USB lead. Also, you have the correct .tar file on your home screen.

Tip: Now is a good time to make a note of your phone's, "Version" in case you ever need to revert back from rooting. To do this, open the dial pad and type in the following:- *#1234#

This will give you 4 lines of information about your phones firmware and CSC code, etc: You should make a careful note of all this information and keep it somewhere safe.

Now you can watch this video so that you know what to expect.

#2.1. Step 1.

Ensure that your phone is fully charged.

On your phone, go to... Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging and check the box.

(On ICS/JB ROM's.. Settings > Developer options > USB debugging and check the box)

Put your phone into Download mode by turning it off completely and then press and hold the following buttons... Volume Down + Home (centre hard key) + (lastly) Power. Continue to hold these buttons until your phone boots into the Warning! screen asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel. Press Volume Up. See video, here.

#2.2. Step 2.

Right click on Odin and select, "Run as Administrator", to open it. Ensure that the Samsung Kies programme is not running at the same time as this can cause problems

With Odin displayed on your PC screen, click on the PDA button and navigate to the .tar file, that you placed on your home screen, and select it.

Make sure that Re-Partition is unchecked and that Auto Reboot, F.Reset Time and PDA are checked and that the PDA box now contains your .tar file.

#2.3. Step 3.

Connect your phone, still in Download mode, to the PC using the USB lead. If you have successfully connected to Odin you should see the ID:COM box in Odin turn yellow or light blue, (depending on which version of Odin you are using).

#2.4. Step 4.

In Odin click the Start button and you should see a green progress bar above ID:COM and shortly after that the box above it will turn green with the word PASS! in it and your phone will automatically reboot.

#2.5. Should you encounter any problems with booting automatically at this stage, put your phone into Recovery mode by turning it off completely and then press and hold the following buttons... Volume Up + Home (centre hard key) + (lastly) Power. Continue to hold these buttons until your phone boots into the Recovery screen. See video. Then select, "wipe cache partition", and under, "Advanced", "wipe dalvik cache", and then, "Go back", and select, "reboot system now". Your phone should now boot up.

Congratulations! You have just rooted your Samsung Galaxy S2.

This is look very simple to root SGSII.

Will this works on my Samsung Galaxy SII with the following versions?
PDA: I9100DXLPF
PHONE: I9100DXLPB
CSC: I9100LBLPF
Build info: Thu Aug 23 13:32:03 KST 2012

I'm hurt that you do not like my suggestion in #2.6! :banghead:

Hi if I buy unlock code for s2 from eBay will it stop offical updates from kies...

Not my area of expertise I'm afraid candy123. It should not do but there again, as you are rooted, you will not receive the official updates via Kies or OTA anyway. See #2.9.

In the UK phones are either unlocked or the unlocking code can be obtained from the carrier. There are a number of apps in Play Store that claim to unlock the SGSII. Galaxy_S Unlock is one I have heard of.

Thanks ironass not rooted as yet. I know I can do it free but I rather get official updates, just trying to find out, how eBay people can give code without being rooted unless its con.

I believe they can get the code from the carrier, you would be much better just following this excellent guide by ironass to root, and give the free apps in the play store a go, I did it a while ago and it worked really quickly for me too! :-)
