Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

OK now the kernel says

2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG2-CL375027
se.infra@SEI-21 #2

And Root Checker Basic says... no good :( It sits there and runs and runs and runs ("Please wait for Root Check to complete. System appears to be running very slow.") but never completes. Titanium Backup can't get root rights (it gets stuck at "Asking for root rights..."). CWM won't open (it just displays a blank screen).

I do not understand why this worked twice but no longer works.

As per #2.5, have you got Superuser and CWM, (ClockWorkMod), installed in your app draw now?

Yes they are installed. They have been ever since I first rooted the phone.

EDIT: Oh for the love of -- ! USB Debugging was off! Now I have root again. So that's what it was. I usually turn it off when I'm going to use the phone in USB Mass Storage mode. I must not have turned it back on the last time I got done with it.

You know the thing about banging your head against a wall, is that it feels real good when you stop! :banghead:

Now you know why I am so pedantic in my replies to questions on this guide and do things by the numbers as I have found after 176 replies, never to take anything for granted and that it is always the stupid, little, mistakes or oversights that cause the biggest problems.

Glad you have now got it all sorted out. Now that you are successfully rooted with the CF-Root kernel which has now replced your stock, unrooted, kernel, there is no reason to become un-rooted unless you flash a stock kernel or stock firmware containing a stock kernel.

Congratulations, at last, merrithewi :congrats:

Right... I think I deserve a drink!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums polandpublic! :)

Everything you need to know about rooting the S2 is contained in posts #1, #2 and #3.

The important information is in the opening sentences of post #1...

This is a step-by-step guide for absolute beginners. Please read posts #1, #2 and #3 carefully and thoroughly as they will take you through the rooting procedure and answer your queries. Particularly post #3 as this has, "Tips for using this Dummies Guide".

There are no shortcuts I'm afraid... so grab a coffee and start reading. ;)

and also i dont have cwm app .I just got superuser app when I rooted my set.. unfortunately I didn't get root access but just got the superuser app.

and then i used different kernel ;I flash siyah kernel 5.0.1 installed successfully plus I got CWM and Stweaks and when i open CWM it says {CWM manager needs superuser access to function!if u have SU installed ,make sure CWM manager is not blocked, then reboot and try again}but when i open superuser there is no app in list bcoz my set is not rooted.... when I check the status by root checker it says that this device does not have proper root access..... I don't know what is problem going on...

You previously flashed a CF-Root kernel I believe. Therefore you may need to wipe cache and Dalvik as per #2.5 and also check you have enabled SuperSU in its settings.

Your firmware is not the Orange UK, carrier branded firmware as JB has not been released for it to date. The latest firmware for JB is LSW. See post #1, Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide to ascertain the latest stock Samsung version available for your CSC code.

I am also wanting to know which version of Siyah is best to use with the above JB or which you recommend, is it still whats listed under #1.8. Android Version 4.1.2, Jelly Bean.

Either Siyah 6.0b4 or 6.0b5.

Can someone help me out? I don't see any kernels which resemble what I have in "about device" in my phone.

There's a screenshot attached... which kernel should I use?

I just upgraded firmware to Jellybean (I think). I don't really have any idea what I'm doing.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks Slug!

I try my best...

This guide is for rooting the Samsung Galaxy S2, GT-i9100, GT-i9100M, GT-i9100T & GT-i9100P only and no other variant.***

If you are unsure of the model of your phone, go to Settings > About phone > Model number

Ah ok thanks! Yes I wasn't sure also because I'm on SGH-i727.

:banghead:

I honestly do not know how much clearer I can make that opening statement regarding which models of phone that the Dummies Guide applies to. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve on it, I'm listening. ;)

Ya but it doesn't say what to do if you have another model, so I was asking what kernel to use.

Errr... how do you expect us to know that on the Galaxy SII forum for the International, GT-i9100/G/M/P/T models since nobody owns the SGH-i727, Skyrocket on here, which has totally different spec's to the International version. See, here...

Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II vs. Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket i727 - GSMArena.com

If Slug had not spotted that model number in your screenshot and you had gone ahead with rooting, then you could have seriously, even irreparably, damaged your phone. I would suggest taking Slug's earlier advice...

Best ask in the Skyrocket All Things Root section to be sure.

TOP TIP: Fill out your, "Device details", in User CP, so that they show up under your username on the left in every post you make. ;)

Thanks Ironass for the reply.

I was wondering if i could pick your brains and expertise again regarding ROMS and Kernels etc....????

I am interested in custom Roms that compliment and work well with Siyah 6.0b4 or 6.0b5 as i am just about to Root my SGS2.....?????

You also strongly recommend backing up your phones operating system using nandroid and Titanium back-up's just in case you have issues...... (hopefully not) I understand from you posts that you root your phone first then using CWM carry out a back up using this which is saved to your SD card....???

Do you know roughly how much space you need on a SD card for this back up to take place....???

Just so it helps here is build of phone using.

Thanks as always, please advise if my understanding is way off the mark.

A, "How long is a piece of string?" question.

My nandroid backup is approx: 1.5GB and my Titanium backup is about half that for one full backup.

It all depends on how much stuff you back up. I would allow 3GB to be on the safe side.

Nice swift reply again Ironass, you worked in customer support previously

As ever thanks for your time and effort helping us minions....

I will be back soon with another question/query no doubt!!!!!

Think you answered your own question by saying nice quick swift reply...clearly never worked in customer services! ;-)
