Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

You should look at putting a custom rom on now, get rid of all that Samsung bloatware, have a look at the Neat ROM thread, its probably the best custom ROM out there but ultimately the phone is now yours to do with as you please :)

kelis32 was on the premium strength Special Brew last night I guess! :beerglass:

I replied to webby62's post, here, a year ago!!!

Still, better late than never... as my last girlfriend said. ;)

how often does Siyah update their kernel? I really want to see V6.0 be out of beta at least. It is so crush prone.

Probably, as you are already rooted, better asked in the, "Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide", thread which lists all the Siyah releases. ;)

The dates for SGSII Siyah releases are shown, here, against every release.

Siyah 6.0beta4 and beta5 have proved remarkably stable in comparison to a lot of other kernels for JB. You may need to check, if you have used any custom settings in STWeaks, that these are not causing your problems and that you have done a KernelWipe prior to installation.

You are already rooted???

That code, as well as others, are disabled, by design, in the LITE version of NEAT ROM.

Hi, thanks for the guide on how to root my phone - brilliant! But one problem... it hasn't worked for me :(

When I switch the phone on, it shows the samsung logo with the yellow triangle, and then it shoes that sort of dark purple yin-yang logo, which then goes black and then reappears again, and after the the phone seems to just turn off.

I can boot it up to recovery mode - at the top of the screen it says 'CMS-based recovery v6. 0. 1.2-Siyah'. Also I followed the instructions on wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache.

However.... I think I may know what the problem is. I think I quite simply clicked the wrong link and installed the wrong kernel. Stupid, I know... So I think my phone has the 4.0.x kernel when it should have the 4.1.2 kernel.

Is it possible to just go back and put the correct kernel on? When I connect the phone to the computer, Odin doesn't recognise that there's anything connected - the ID:COM box stays blank.

Any info? I have a SGS2 with the most recent update (updated it just yesterday and now it's asking me for a sim unlock code, which I don't have so it needs rooting!)

To re-cap: phone root attempt and now won't boot, but can still get it into recovery mode. Think I used the 'Siyah-s2-v5.0.1' kernel instead of 'Siyah-s2-v6.0b5'.

Thanks all!!!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums sa1988! :)

Yep! flashing the wrong kernel from post #1 of the Dummies Guide will do that to your phone. :(

You need to get into Download mode, not Recovery, to connect to Odin, as per post #2, and flash the whole firmware for your CSC code as per #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide. This will get you back to your un-rooted firmware and you can try again... using the correct kernel. ;)

Thanks so much! Amazing!

Although I didn't/couldn't get my phone back to being unrooted because the samMobile link in required me to be a registered user to get the firmware. I think I do have the most recent firmware somehwere downloaded already though - just this morning I turned on my computer and it said 'Kies - new firmware download complete' ??

Anyway, I just put it into Download mode instead of recovery mode, then selected the correct kernal and so far all is good!

Brilliant! Thanks :D

I don't suppose you know if there's a way to unlock my Sim for free? I've found an app that does it but it wants me to pay. It's annoying because my sim was already unlocked, but the update messed it up - I think this has happened to a lot of people.

There are a number of app's on the Play Store that claim to unlock your phone but I've never used them. I would always recommend getting the unlock code from your carrier.

Good day!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums sychobob! :)

All the kernels mentioned in the guide have the brick bug fix. For details of the different ways to get rid of the Yellow Triangle, see post #2 under the heading, "Removing the Yellow Warning Triangle at Boot-up".

Just a quick message to thank everyone here specially Ironass for all the easy to follow rooting instructions.

rooted & updated to 4.1.2 just now without a hitch.

Afraid not. Pull the battery out... wait 30s. Replace battery and the attempt to boot into Recovery mode as per the instructions and video in post #2.

Hi,

I followed these steps until step #2.5. The phone does not boot up. I've tried a few times and keep getting the same issue. Pls help! Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Tc323! :)

What is your Android version, as per #1.5?

Which kernel did you use to root?

My problem may have been resolved. I used a kernel that says there's problem with mounting the SD card. I resolved it by using another kernel, although exactly the same as my original, but it worked.

Thanks a lot!!!

Sigh.. Looks like I have a new problem. After flashing the new Kernel, my camera is not working.

My original Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084dpi@HP16#3 SMP PREEMPT
Build Number: IMM76D.DXLPF
Baseband version: I9100DXLPB

I've tried:
CF-Root-SGS2_BU_VOD_LPC-v5.4-CWM5.tar
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_NEE_LPD-v5.5-CWM5.tar
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXI_LPF-v5.5-CWM5.tar
and all have the same problem.

Thanks in advance!

So why are you not using the kernel to root ICS, Android 4.0.4, as per #1.7 of post #1 instead of trying to root your phone with a Gingerbread, Android 2.3, kernel?

Oh... Actually I did. I used the files you listed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
which says ICS - CF-Root v5.5/6:...

OK, I'll try per #1.7, which is Siyah v5.0.1.

BTW, is it possible to upgrade to JellyBean by using Siyah v6.0 as in #1.8?
