Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Hello and welcome to Android Forums EvelineGirl! :)

I see from your post that you are running T-Mobile, Netherlands, firmware on ICS, Android 4.0.4.

As per post #1, you will need to root this using the Siyah .tar kernel mentioned...

Haha you see I almost got the wrong one. Thank you!

EDIT: Al went well but now my phone isn't doeing anything! (A was afraid for this).
The only thing I see is the samsung galaxy S2 logo with the yellow triangle thing.
I can't get into Recovery/Save mode either only download mode seemed to work.

Can I just check the following things with you EvelineGirl...

1. It was the Siyah .tar file for Odin that you downloaded and installed and not the .zip file?

2. You did not extract the .tar file as per the instructions for the .zip file in post #1?

3. You are holding the 3 buttons in for at least 30 seconds to get into the Recovery mode, (a lot longer than it takes to get into Download mode on its 3 buttons)?

No I dit everything just like the instructions said. I double checked everything.
Yes only the .tar file as it was already .tar I didn't extracted it.
Recovery Mode really wasn't working anymore (got into Recovery Mode several times before so I know how to enter RM).

But all looks fine now, I just booted my phone in to download mode again and tried to load the .tar again using ODIN and after that my phone rebooted and was working again yeah!!:D

Also root checker says: "congratulations you have now root access!"

Strange that it didn't worked out the first try but he, all ok now.

Eveline.

Congratulations EvelineGirl!

Welcome to the club.

Sounds like it may have been a bad flash the first time around.

Now you need to do the Titanium, nandroid and efs backups mentioned in post #2 to protect yourself.

Thank you and I'll do that!
So happy right now.;)

What if I didn't back anything up after root and deleted some system apps? Will flashing using Odin bring them back?

So, no nandroid or Titanium backups!

In that case you will need to re-install your firmware again via Odin and re-root.

To remove bloatware, see here. Item 9 is interesting! ;)

Hello and welcome to Android Forums dhanushkakasun! :)

You do not mention which kernel you used to root your phone. If it was Siyah or PhilZ, did you follow the instructions in post #2...

"Superuser *** If you have used Siyah or PhilZ kernels to root your phone you will need to download and install SuperSU separately, free, from the Play Store."

Updated post #1 with details of rooting the new, official, Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2, XXLS8, release.

My problem is that after all necessary procedures went normally my phone stuck with Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100 and yellow triangle on display. It does not work. Anybody have any idea to help?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums raduga! :)

Just a few questions...

1. What Android version are you on, (GB, ICS, JB)?

2. What kernel did you use to root?

3. Have you wiped cache and dalvik as per post #2?

I installed the stock SGSII JB 4.1.2 for Spain (I am in Spain). I went through rooting with Odin, flashed OK PhilZ-cwm6-XXLS8-FOP-4.00-b22.tar.md5, I got the yellow triangle, I can enter in this PhilZ recovery mode, but the root checker and SuperSU says my phone is not rooted. Then I entered in recovery, wiped out Davlik, fixed permissions etc, rebooted but it seems that my SGS2 is still not rooted. This is strange... any ideas what may went wrong?
Of course I can give it a try with another kernel, but I wanted to check if anyone else installing this particular kernel succeeded to root.

Hello ivanv!

How odd! You certainly appear to have done all the correct things. :thumb:

Could I ask you to download and install BusyBox, free from the Play Store and see if that returns a positive with rooting.

Failing that, there is the Siyah v6.00beta4 kernel which you can use to root, with again, the .tar version.

Well, I've installed the NeatROM and it's OK, rooted and SuperSU works. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I've had exactly the same experience Ivan, seems to have flashed successfully but still shows my old kernel info on the 'about phone', and root access isn't working! Once I cleared the cash as Ironass explained it reconfigured my apps etc, but still no root :s Like you I'm using the Spanish 4.1.2 ROM. Going to try an alternative kernel....

I see from the guides that the Siyah and other kernels require you to be rooted first, and have CWM etc installed... because I can't confirm this (as the Philz kernel doesn't appear to have taken somehow ), can anyone recommend what I could try next?

I've tried re-flashing the PhilZ kernel again and it's the same result (says it's successful, the recovery menu is clearly from PhilZ, yet root access isn't working and 'about phone' still shows kernel:

Ironass, thanks for the tip you gave Ivan above, but the link says that kernel is for the leaked JB ROM and I'm running the official (Spanish) version. :)

I have done everything the guide has said to do to the tee but after my phone reboots and passes the boot up with the yellow exclamation mark warning I get nothing but a blank screen... have also done the other part to see if that would work

here is the info of my phone.

I used the LPB v5.2 Proper then tried the LPB v5.2 normal.

Should I try a newer custom rom?

!!! Nevermind I'm an idiot, didn't install the other ROM "Siyah" ROM!!!

I see from the guides that the Siyah and other kernels require you to be rooted first,

You can use Siyah v6.00b4 to root JB official and leaked.

PhilZ is a essentially a rooted stock kernel with a custom recovery and will always show the kernel details above. Have you installed SuperSU, BusyBox and Root checker from the Play Store?

:( I just tested my sim card in my phone to see if it would work but.... nope I still have a Network Lock on it... I thought this Rooting guide was to help with getting rid of a Network Locked phone.... can someone point me in a direction to how I can network unlock my phone...

P.S Not a network unlock code site... the code given to me by vodafone australia doesn't match my IMEI code.

You can use Siyah v6.00b4 to root JB official and leaked.

Ah I see, thanks... yup got all three apps and they all say I'm not rooted. I'll try the siyah kernel tonight. Thanks for your help!

You thought wrong! ;)

You can either contact your carrier to unlock your phone or, visit your friendly, local, mobile phone store or there are a number of unlocking app's available on Play Store.
