Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

See my reply, here.

Once you have flashed the correct firmware you can root your phone by carefully and thoroughly reading posts #1, #2 and #3 for the GT-i9100.

Hi I have a GT-I9100M. I want to root and unlock it. Will this method of rooting worked fine then unlocking it afterwards with "Galaxy S Unlock" app? I refused to use the method stated in the ff thread

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...lock-root-bell-galaxy-s2-step-step-guide.html

as it is very confusing for me and I don't understand Kernels and that thread of Kernels is messy. Your method seems easier. So can i use your method and use "Galaxy S Unlock app" for unlocking and be successful? Thank you :)

And in case you needed this:

ANDROID VERSION
4.1.2

KERNEL VERSION
3.0.31-900488
se.infra@SEP-127 #3
SMP PREEMPT Mon Jan 28 23:45:31
KST 2013

BUILD NUMBER
JZO54K.I9100MUGMA5

Please help me! :'(

The root will work, but I can't vouch for the unlock as I've never tried that app.

I see from your post in the How To Root [...] The Bell S2 thread that you've succeeded.

Hye guys..i follow all of the step above..i think 4 times but still cant get my phone rooted..my phone got stuck/jammed at the first bootscreen after installing root via odin, plus i cant get in to recovery mode..i only can get into download mode..i have to flash my phone back..to get my phone work again..i repeat this process 4 times..still get the same result..im still new in rooting section..

Model : GT-I9100G
OS : Jellybean 4.1.2

please help me i need to get my phone rooted because i want to use GS2_Repair.. :(:(:(:(:(:(

Hi mate, I followed your Dummies Guide to rooting the S2 and it worked fine (brilliant guide for an idiot like me, might I add!). Now I accidentally went into SU and clicked unroot trying to get back to the factory state.

It all went tits up from there. I've tried to reflash the kernel using your method a few times, but to no avail. My root is gone and it's not coming back unfortunatley. ODIN says passed but Root Checker and root apps say no

Do you have any idea if I'm doing something wrong with your method? I used it to root successfully but trying to re-root is proving to be a lot more difficult.

Thanks for your time

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Corey! :)

The first 3 posts of this thread are constantly monitored by myself and are up-to-date as far as rooting is concerned. Please take the time to read them through, carefully and thoroughly, before embarking on it.

Good luck!

Hi, just rooted my S2 with the kernel as in post #1.8 I cant move apps around the home screens anymore, any ideas? also any recommendations on modems? I have the GT-I9100T. also is there an updated bloatware removal list as the list linked to here doesnt seem to match the list in my titanium backup?

Ok, moving apps is now fine, also current modem seems good. Still looking for updated bloatware removal list, and also my battery usage has gotten worse, have installed some battery apps but still sucking any tips?

Having just upgraded from an S2 to an S4, I fancied rooting my old phone. This guide was invaluable - easy to follow, very accurate and totally successful (it's the reason I joined these forums!). All I have to do now is to work out what to do with it! Thanks very much.

Thanks for the guide Ironass
Im a samsung user but the wife is about to get an s2 so i thought id have a little refresher and your guide is perfect :)
Gona root it as soon as she gets it and put on the rom im using on my s3 (Sale's AOSP NeatROM)
thanks again and hi forum

I'm Back, been running stock for a while ( Unreliable Alarm on JB ) and before the S5 im considering ASOP Neatrom, is Siyah v6.0beta5 .TAR kernel file the latest for unlocking, do you have a dl link as it appears not to work here. 4.1.2 I9100XXMS2

This guide is only about rooting, see #1.1, and will not unlock a stock Galaxy S2 firmware.

do you have a dl link as it appears not to work here. 4.1.2 I9100XXMS2

Just checked the link and it is working fine.

Hi All,
first post from newbie! i have followed the steps to root my S2 and all went as per instruction and managed to root my phone, so thanks for that! just got a problem with the unlock sim part now. i have tried chainfires galaxy s2 unlock from play store and galaxy s from same place, neither will give me a code to unlock. does this mean i will have to pay "orange" to get an unlock code or a shop maybe? or is there another way round the problem without paying?

thank you in advance

ARGH. I have a i9100M and it came with this firmware:
3.0.31-900488se.infra@sep-127 #3 SMP Preempt Mon Jan 28 23:45:31 KST 2013

I've tried flashing the Siyah kernel Siyah-s2-v6.0b5 as suggested, but Odin always gives the same message. I've used this same cable to image other phones in the past so I'm sure the cable's fine.

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums guysmiley! :)

Have you tried the guide that is linked to in #1.4, concerning advanced connection problems?

Hi ironass,
Yes, I read through that post but it describes phones that aren't recognized by Kies/ADB/Win7 and my phone does get recognized without issue. Odin recognizes it too (first line of message is 'Added' and the COM light goes blue).

My issue is that Odin hangs at the zImage stage and never completes. I have to force power-down the phone and unplug it (after 15 minutes of waiting).

My bad. I shouldn't attempt to answer queries on 3 hangovers and one coffee!

Are you using the Siyah.tar file and not the Siyah.zip file?

No worries :)

I got it rooted by flashing one of Philz' Super kernels from external sd.

Now I can't figure out how to unlock it... Lots of paid methods but no freebies that I can see...

Ended up paying 3.99 (well worth it).

One last question (sorry!):
When I try to flash 4.4.4 recovery from 3e (running 4.1.2) I get a signature verification error.

Thanks for the help, all!
In order to bring me to SlimSaber ([ROM][4.3.1][07/19] SlimSaber Reborn - i9100… | Galaxy S II | XDA Forum) from stock 4.1.2 on an i9100M (Bell phone) I:
1. Flashed the OJC file from here Dev-Host - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service. Thanks to [ROM][4.4.4][07/21] SlimSaber - i9100 [SlimKat Unofficial Builds] - Post #13510 - XDA Forum
2. Rebooted to Recovery then flashed the SlimKernel from the SlimSaber post above and followed the installation instructions in that post.
