Root Rooting GB, with Amon Ra v2.3 recovery

when you get your new card you can just use the card reader and move the backup over to the new card. you want the new card partitioned first before doing so, however.
 
These are absolutely awesome instructions but I have one comment. In step 25 quoted below, all boxes should be checked except sd-ext, right? It's not clear (to me) that the first two boxes should also remain checked.

Nandroid backup
Now go to Backup/Restore and press the power button. On this screen you will see

[X] boot
[X] system
[X] data
[ ] cache
[ ] recovery
[ ] wimax
[ ] sd-ext
[ ] android-secure

Boot, system and data are selected already so using the volume down button and then using power button to select, select data, cache, recovery, wimax and android-secure. Each of these will then have an X next to it when selected.

it is not necessary to do all of them that will just make the nandroid that much larger then it already is. just use the first three. if you have a card that is partitioned then check off sd ext as well. also have at least one nandroid backup with wimax backed up and keep that nandroid someplace safe like a computer or dropbox.
 
Don't forget to turn your antivirus back on immediately after you root.

I rooted a little over a week ago using these steps, but I didn't turn my antivirus back on. I think you all know where this is going...

So last night, I completed my reinstall of XP :P

Brown (UPS) just delivered a Lexar 32gig MicroSD to me this morning. I was planning on partitioning it...and decided to read more about this. I found some places (XDA being one) mention that I should flash a ROM and then partition. I have not chosen a ROM yet, but would like to partition so I don't have to later on.

Can I do the partition steps listed here on my stock ROM rooted Evo? Will the Evo work properly with the parition? What exactly are we doing with the partition? Are we creating a 2-gig partition that seamlessly appears as the phone's internal memory...and the rest of the SD card is merely storage?

It will not make a difference if you partition your sdcard before or after flashing a rom. I only suggest partitioning directly after rooting for the good reason that there will not be as many files to transfer after rooting.

Yes, the stock rooted Evo will work just fine with a partitioned sdcard. Unless you flash darktremor's a2sd, the stock rooted rom will not recognize the partition(ext3).

But since amon ra and amon ra style recoveries allow edify and amend scripting, I would then not use TWRP for the Evo 4G. But that's just me;)
 
hey ...noob here...so i partitioned my 8 gig sd card that came with my evo and now i have only 5 gig available space....any idea were the remaining went and also is there a way of un-partitioning an sd card.....don't mean to sound to stupid....

well what size partition did you do? how much stuff do you have on your card? how many nandroid backups do you have? the best way to unpartition your card is to reformat it.

go to settings/unmount sd card/erase sd card.

now this will erase your cards content so make sure that you make a backup of it on your computer.
 
darn i feel so stupid..lol..i did a 2048 size partition and i have two nandroid backups...i understand that now but what is that amount of space allocated to ..the 2048......
 
Just wanted to say thanks to Andygu3 and everyone who helped with comments on this page. Got my Evo the day it was released from Sprint and got tired of all the updated bloatware so I decided to root. I was a little intimidated about rooting until coming across this thread. I will say the only confusing thing was that I read it that I was supposed to add .zip to the PC36IMG file and I couldn't get it to work right until deleting and reloading without adding .zip and it went through fine. Thank you all again for your input and desire to help others out.

I rooted it a while back, have CWM and trying to get AMON RA. Added the file to my SD card, went into recovery and tried to update from .zip file and I get

--Installing: /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

then it goes back to menu

choose zip from sdcard. Where did I go wrong?

amon ra is not flashed through recovery. you need to make sure that:
1. you named the file correctly. it needs to be PC36IMG with no extra zip at the end.
2. you need to place it on the root (no folders) of the sd card.

then boot into hboot(bootloader). if those two things are done correctly hboot should be able to find it and it will ask you if you want to update, select yes and you should be good to go.

in es the file should look like PC36IMG.zip. on your pc windows tends to hide extensions so that a lot of people have put extra ".zip" to the end of the file name when it is not needed. so just make sure that it only has one zip at the end.
 
Had only one .zip and took it off. Will add it again. But even then, it had been doing this...

That means that either the file is named wrong OR the file is not placed in the root directory of your sd card. It seems like you have a handle on it so let us know what happens after you add the file ext. (.zip) back on.

that is what hboot is programmed to do. what it is doing is scanning for the PC36IMG file. if it does not find it it will give you those messages that you see.

you are not extracting the file are you? it needs to stay zipped up.
 
Still "No image!" after renaming it to .zip. Gonna call it a night, work a 5 a.m. tomorrow. Want to thank ocnbrze and frenchy714 for your patience with me. I don't think my 50 yr old brain is completely shot. This is coming from a guy that worked on computer systems where you had to load registers to get it going, not that is old. Thanks!
