Root Rooting my Dinc later this week, please help me prepare

As stated in the topic, I plan on rooting later on this week. I've read over the guide that is stickied on this forum and will be using it to go through the process.

I'll admit that I'm a bit nervous about it, but it's assuring to know that everyone here is so helpful. What all can I do to prepare, so that everything goes as smoothly as possible? And what backup app should I use to backup all the apps and contacts that I have now so that I don't lose them in the process.

Your contacts will automatically be backed up if you have them saved through gmail. I use app brain for backing up my apps and sms backup + for my text messages. Make sure you know if you have an AMELOD or SLCD Inc and follow the correct steps for a working recovery (SLCD only.) Lastly, make sure you install the drivers correctly and you should be good to go. Good luck

Thanks, I'll download and get familiar with those tonight. Is there anything not in the guide that is should be aware of, or does it pretty much cover all the bases?

Also, what rom would you suggest? I'd like to start with something simple, but free, and as close to stock Android as possible.

The guides are all really good and if followed to a T will be all you need.

All ROM's are free. You can donate if you would like to support/thank the developer of said ROM you flash for his hard work. If you want something stock, I would suggest THIS It's built from a properly signed, HTC Sense/Froyo OTA v3.26.605.1 package but Deodexed so you can flash mods/themes on top of it without issue. This is also a ROM that has a stock look and feel to it, which you can find HERE There are a few other "stock looking" ROM's floating around, just search here in the ROM's section and over at XDA.

When I first rooted I wanted to stay as stock as possible and then I found Myn's Warm Two Point Two which is an EVO based ROM and looks nothing like stock. Something about it caught my eye and it was the first ROM I ever flashed on my Inc. Flash forward 3 weeks or so and it's still the first and only ROM I have flashed. It's an amazing ROM and I have no urge to flash anything else anytime soon. It's that good, IMO. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, don't be afraid to try something new. As long as you make a Nandroid Backup right after rooting you can always go back to your setup pre-flash. Hope this helps

It's a lot easier than you think. Just take your time and read instructions carefully. Plus, if you run into any speed bumps this forum is full of people willing to help.

You shouldn't lose anything in the process of rooting. You'll need to be ready for backing up apps and data once you start flashing Roms. For that I prefer Titanium Backup but there are other choices as well. Once you are successfully rooted, do a nandroid backup via clockwork so you have a safe restore point to fall back on as you move forward.
