Root Rooting

when people describe rooting they say it's the equivalent to jailbreaking an iphone so does that mean i can get all the apps on the android market that cost money for free?
 
Rooting is gaining root access to the NAND memory of said device. Once root access is achieved, one can change what ever is stored in said nand memory.
 
Firstly, welcome to rooting!! And congrats for taking the first step! Secondly, id like to apologize for some of answers you got here. Granite is entirely correct, and rooting does give you the ability to use apps (some of which are free) that you cant use unless youre rooted. That being said, more often times than not, the DEV's (developers) work very hard on these things, and usually have a "if you like my work, donate here" kind of thing. Rooting, for the most aprt, is used by folks who want to get rid of those stupid nascar, nfl and amazon mp3 apps that youre not allowed to remove without super user access, and to "flash" on new os's. There are a myriad of ROMs (aka os's(operating systems)) that are more efficient, look prettier and are just plain customizable. Let us know if you have any ?'s about replacing your OS with a custom one, but one thing i feel that i NEED to say is MAKE NANDROID BACKUPS!!!! sorry for yelling, but its that important if youre planning on changing stuff significantly. And if nandroid isnt a term your familiar with, id say that reading the rooting for dummies guide would be very beneficial. It looks intimidating at first, but its actually quite user friendly. Ask ?'s if you cant find what youre looking for, there are a ton of us who'd love to help ya out bro!

Apologizing for what again? Downloading paid apps for free = Stealing... and those type of actions will only discourage further app development....

I dont think he was encouraging stealing just that the answer wasn't helpful in explaining what root really did

See above... op was not asking, what is rooting? He specifically asked if he/she can get paid apps for free.... so to me the intent to root was to rip off devs for their paid apps.... besides no one was disrespectful toward the op... it was a blunt answer.... that's all...

you coulda elaborated and not just given the "youre a theif" comment... it seems that many people are under the misconception that this user was also under.... you are correct, but just more blunt than necessary

Guys the OP hasn't been back since, so let it go. This is a positive encouraging forum, leave the bashing and trolling to the heads over at xda. I gave the definition of rooting, even though I knew what he was actually aiming at, without being negative.

Lets drop it before the mods get involved and start suspending people. Besides I'm cro-magnon man, and have no idea what I'm doing anyway. ;)

no misconstruing whatsoever captain bash a noob... as you seem to have missed, the op starts with, and i quote, "when people describe rooting they say it's the equivalent to..." not "is rooting being able to steal apps?" and to further debunk your backpeddleing ass it was then said, and i quote again, "Downloading paid apps for free = Stealing" and if youve not noticed, this is a commonly referred to subject, and many people dont know the negative impact it has on a small community like that of the devs. This forum survives on goodwill, and the gracious advice given by those who which it to continue, therefore pay it forward. it seems as tho you may have... you also may have nailed it right on the head, the point wasnt that i thought you were wrong, its entirely possible that youre dead on... the point was for you to not be an a__ about it. Yes, finding paid apps for free is wrong... uploading them is wrong.. etc etc but being an a__ to someone who's potentially nothing more than a person who is entirely ignorant to what rooting is, (it was the op's first effen post for the love of God) is entirely unnecessary. diction, grammar and diplomacy are the things that grease wheels that need to remain moving. be kind, rewind.

some may recall in past postings that even some senior member get frustrated which led him tell a noob or 2 that theyre making their head hurt, but only after providing several(like 12 back and forth exchanges) earnest attempts at creating a positive solution
 
I loathe internet arguing, its the exact reason i simply said OK. Someone be the bigger man and quit saying your peace then saying ok im done...and then responding again.

Chances are unless you live in my neighborhood im not going to ever show up and punch you straight in the throat though if you did i totally would (i have money to burn give me an address and i will fly there to do it but no one ever volunteers an address, yeah i have that kind of resolve lol)...so why argue without possible resolution? Either cage match this shit out or stfu :D. I enjoy android forums, dont spew bs all over it please :).
