I noticed something that perhaps you guys can clear up for me.
In the J-Bear Troubleshooting Guide section ROM/Data Recovery, the following steps are given:

There are three ways to recover your ROM. Try each one in until you succeed:
Open the cmd prompt that is located in your ControlBear folder where you unzipped all of the files. Type the following cmds into the cmd prompt.
1. ControlBear -r (This is run with the phone at the JuopunutBear/Arrow screen) If this succeeds recovery is complete otherwise continue to Step 2.

2. ControlBear -f (This is run with the phone at the fastboot screen). If this succeeds you're done otherwise continue to Step 3.

3. fastboot flash boot boot_backup.img

4. fastboot flash recovery recovery_backup.img (This is done with the phone in fastboot mode) If this succeeds continue to Step 5.

5. Boot the phone to android and install busybox from the market if not already installed.

I am focusing on step 5 in particular. Busy Box requires root access if I am not mistaken. How can one install Busy Box, or even have it "already installed" if one is NOT supposed to have root?

That's true.

I think those recovery instructions are out of date and it might be worth pointing that out to the unlimited.io staff if you are feeling brave today. ;)

This post on XDA confirms that at least one user was able to get S-OFF recently without rooting first. I know his wire trick was very recent based on his other posts there.

OK, I just got an answer from fuses, one of the developers at unlimited.io:

[11:10] <+evovuser> On evo v forums we are trying to help users with the recovery instructions on the unlimited.io website and a question came up today that we can't answer. The current JBear instructions don't seem to require root but step 5 of recovery suggests installing busybox which requires root. Is that correct?
[11:13] <@Fuses> evovuser, JBear does not need root. SD-card recovery however needs root or unsecure boot-image.
[11:14] <+evovuser> OK, so rooting should be part of the recovery process? Also, is it still OK to root the stock (RUU) ROM before doing the wire trick?
[11:15] <@Fuses> evovuser, Don't write your own instructions, all needed is in unlimited.io website.
[11:16] <@Fuses> evovuser, stock RUU - htcdev.com unlock - run. No rooting.

That sounds pretty definite to me, albeit a little unfriendly. :(

So if you need to do recovery I recommend logging into the #juopunutbear IRC channel via their support page for instructions because the ones currently on their website are incomplete.

Help my HTC Evo V is completely borked. I have tried to, but I have nothing. I have no recovery, no OS and all I get it that juopunut bear logo after the bootloader tries to boot to system. I tried that controlbear -f thing but no: it says that it cannot fond a seat. I only have a windows machine and need help badly.

please point me to a walkthrough that can help me salvage my phone. I am a complete HTC noob and relatively new to smartphones. if there is any way that you can help please do.

also I somehow lost my backup files and cannot find them at all. if you can give me a blank set to the VM HTC Evo V 3D 4G I would be very thankful.

I don't mean to be a bitch but what's with those io people they can treat everyone like dirt it seems and they don't even have the right instructions up I think that's B.S yeah I'm not trying to complain but what the hell are they totally incompassionate this is coming from someone who did everything correctly I think according to the vague rules posted on their site now I got a brick its worked for some that's great.I knew that the outcome might suck (I.e. bricked phone) but no reason to be a ass ok their smart I'm not as smart no need to ride that ego.

Help please? I have my HTC Evo 3D unlocked, rooted, and when I try to use juopunutbear s off wire trick, it alwasy says SECONDARY BACKUP FAILED. I have no friggin idea.. I don't have HTC Sync installed or any custom roms on the phone. Only 4ext and I think I have cwm over that. Every time... I can't get it.

Making a comment on.a long.dead. list it looks like, on page 6 is what the link took me to, so i couldn't help but think that its a joke or something that they didnt answer the guys question about doing the juopunutbear and then not being able to get ur pc to read it afterwards when u have to set it only to charge, and then u would obviously have to set it back.

can you quote the post? otherwise i have no idea what you are talking about. and since you brought it up, why resurrect an old thread that is probably useless by now as i doubt anyone still has this phone.

its where the guy gets it to work, and then csnt get his pc to read it afterwards, i can see why no1 would use that phone nowadays, but a proccessor is good for 6 yrs they say, and if u s-off and root then u could unlock the 2nd proccesor esp if the phone hasnt been used it will help the gpu out, or leave it alone, and like a pc if u can unlock the cores and get them to help with certain systems, an thats going to far, too much trouble maybe, but u could run 1 proccessor down then unlock the other, or not run it down too much, then with roms u could idk work for lionsbridge or somthing because jellybean is min requirement, so i dont see why the phone isnt still pretty much invalauble in its own ways.

+ if ur one of us crazy ignorant folks like i was, i couldnt even get apks to work at 1st on the phone till i found intalnow by matsumi, 1mb wonder. So if u didn't know some of the jokes they pull like kingroot and supersu replace, and they dont tell u that kingroots eats away supersu if its not read only, sides that alot of us thlught u could unlock the bottloader somehow without a pc, an in general u cant phones don't do self surgery, so they made a spiel a comedy sorta on a thing called 'scroll me ups', its on xda utube, and it says that itl help u be able to use xprivacy then u can just use msl reader on at least some htc phones, so i looked at the # of downloads, it was pretty hi, and then i looked at the # of views for the same thing on utube, it was poultry very few, so its a jokes on u sorta deal for being dumb, so i eventually found another program, and it probably wouldn't be easy normally for some folks, and that msl reader at playstore actually works, alot easier than using oem hooked raw maybe, and the only thing ive like about samsung at first thought is their chargers. Because they don't use certain either logcat protection, or the deamon opperates differently with that an dial codes, so there easy cheesy japanesy i hear, but i like hot wiring phones, even the xiomi hotwire looks kinda cool.
