Sorry if this has been asked before but i just got a replacement phone and would like to root and s-off, I already got the most recent updates but I'm wondering if i can use the old guide to do it? I have all the tools and instructions saved. The new guide to root & s-off looks way to complicated lol. Thanks in advance :)

Follow this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/695161-s-off-root-fix-everything-all-in-one.html

It's the most up to date and has the most relevant information and works for the new OTA!

Yes it will work :)

In my opinion, remanifest's guide is easier to follow.

I originally S-off using the old guide too.

You can skip some steps but ONLY if you know what you're doing.
Like the recovery, you can just fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (with 4ext .img image) unless you like the really old twrp in that guide.

What about that guide looks complicated?

Anyway, do what you want - hope you're successful!

Sorry I just haven't had to s-off or root anything in a while. My old phone i rooted with the old guide then had mobsterz rom on it, after that i never really messed around with it. So now that i have to root and do everything again i kinda just feel comfortable using the way i already know... :)

I dont think that guide has anything to do with s-off. o.O

oops i meant using that guide to unlock the bootloader and flash recovery. Then just S-off using the guide on there website

Its up to you how you do it, But when I s-offed, I used remanifests s-off guide and didnt have any issues at all.

Should i expect issues? I never have in the past.. maybe i should use remanifests s-off guide just to be safe.

Well, using an older guide may have issues. its not likely, but you never know. remanifest keeps his updated as soon as theres a new way to do things. he keeps up with it well. :p

Actually now that i look at the guide again it doesn't look that complicated lol but could anyone tell me what shooter-root-soff-fix is? Also when i use to s-off i only had to run the exe and wait til i needed to do the wire trick, is that still the same?

shooter-s-off-fix is just the folder that has EVERYTHING you need to s-off and install the latest updates from the 2.95 update. This has hboot jbear 1.50.5050 included along with fastboot.exe and adb.exe. and the HTC drivers installer.

I recommend downloading it anyway, Even if you have most of this stuff already. That way its all in one location and you dont have to worry about changing directories and dont have to worry about having the latest versions of everything.

If you want to use TWRP in my guiide, that's fine. Just download this image and name it recovery.img - overwrite the file that's in the S-OFF folder for this one.

But, most people seem to prefer 4EXT - it might be worth trying to see if you like it better as well. You can always change recoveries if you don't like it.

I just did the same thing. After new OTAs and radio changes and everything, it can be confusing as to what is now compatible with what and what works. You can just take the OTAs, unlock the bootloader, S-off, and flash SuperSU for root if you're staying stock. If you're following remanifest's guide, it's basically step one, substituting 4EXT recovery for whatever you prefer. The thread you referred to is fine for using just to unlock the bootloader too. (Step 4.)

Hey Guys i need help again I went along and used remanifests s-off guide to do everything and all went smooth but when i do the wire trick as soon as the paper clip makes contact with the little hole on the side it restarts and say s-off failed. Is that normal? It doesn't even really give me time to do the wire trick before restarting..

Please post the contents of your command prompt in a code box
like this
so we may review it. Have you reviewed the youtube video & are you using a metronome set to 48bpm?

EDIT: Thanks Brian706, you've taught me something new :D

In case anyone else wants to show their tags in the future, it's done like so:

[high][plain]
w00t
[/plain][/high]

I don't have the command prompt because after i couldn't get it yesterday i just control -f and returned the phone to normal mode I plan on trying it again in a little. But I'm pretty sure everything went ok my bootloader is unlocked. I also made a mistake in my earlier post. As soon as the paperclip touches the Grind point i think its called, where the memory card is it restarts without giving me a chance to do the trick. Also i did install metronome set to 48bpm but after that idk what to do with it. Leave it open or save?

for some reason i cant help but think this has happened to me before hmm.. Im going to switch usb ports and try again, just maybe it will work lol
