S3 (3 UK) OTA Update received

Hi guys,

Thought I'd chime in with my findings since accepting the Jellybean OTA update from 3 UK.

Pros:
  1. Data comms problems gone away (WiFi and 3g) - no more rediculously slow uploads to Dropbox, Facebook and to my local network! Big relief!!

Cons:
  1. Choppy music playing in both Poweramp and stock player (slightly better with power saving mode off, but only slightly);
  2. UI often jerky (NOT butter smooth at all most of the time!) - had it freeze for 4 or 5 seconds and then go mental as it caught up with my frustrated finger movements when it unfroze!
  3. TOUCHWIZ kept crashing on me (as reported by CBers) when trying to move icons around in one of my main-screen folders, after upgrading. Only sorted itself out when I added another icon to the folder;
  4. Battery life not quite as good as it was on ICS.
  5. Phone hard reset on me this morning while filling in a web form in Google Chrome. Might not be a Jellybean issue, but it'd never happened before!

Overall, I'm not impressed. The only reason I'm not gonna revert back to ICS, is that the data comms (specifically upload) issues have all now gone away under Jellybean.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has seen the effects I mentioned here.

Cheers all!
Dom.

You've made me feel slightly better about still not receiving the update on Orange UK 3 weeks after 3 pushed it.

Maybe they are trying to iron out the issues.

It would be nice to have the option to try it out though!

I'm on 3 and I've also noticed:

occasional glitches in music play back
occasional hangups where nothing happens before a sudden burst of speed. Almost feels like the OS can't handle everything it has to do, not really sure what its using its 4 cores for then! The music glitch often happens when screen off so I'm not pushing the software hard at all. Normally its smoother and more fluid than ICS was but I didn't get the hang ups before

Also battery life is worse, especially with wifi on. Battery just seems to drain fast in standby and Android System in battery stats is much higher than it used to be.

Can't switch off s planner notifications - they keep turining back on.

Thsts it off the top of my head, a little disappointed. First software versions often require patches to improve so I'm not surprised with the glitches. However what worries me is whilst 3 were fast with JB they were useless with ICS updates. If I had to pick, I'd rather get the main software version a bit slower but then get it fully supported than get the new version straight away but not get any patches for it. When 3 finally gave us the ICS patch about 4 updates after everyone else (adding the brightness slider) I saw many imporvements in stability and battery life on my phone. I hope we get the JB updates, else I might have myself a Nexus 4 soon!

I forgot to mention in my previous post about another problem that occurred after taking the Jellybean OTA. It's to do with playlists.

I had a number of playlists setup, which were working perfectly in Poweramp (not sure about the stock music player, as I created them and only ever played them in Poweramp) before the Jellybean update, and after it they were all showing empty in both Poweramp and the stock player. The '/mnt/sdcard/playlists' folder currently contains a load of non-empty .m3u8 files, as well a matching set of zero-byte .pla files.

I suspect this isn't a Jellybean specific problem, as I found loads of confused people talking about problems with empty playlists on the web, but if anyone here could shed any light on it, I'd be fascinated to hear from them! I still haven't found any way to get my playlists back :(

What I find so surprising is that simple text files containing only ASCII file paths, cause so much trouble for a supposedly smart operating system?? Beats me!!

Received notification of an update this morning, but it stuck at 0% so I stopped it and tried again only to get the try later message.

I plugged it into my PC and kies updated, then applied firmware update.

According to kies I now have

Service version: PDA:LL4 / PHONE:LK2 / CSC:LL1 (H3G)

My phone now shows

Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: I9300NELK2
Kernel version: 3.0.31-566833 se.infra@SEP-64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Dec 10 17:04:26 KST 2012
Build number: JZO54K.I9300XXELL4
