Help S6 Edge will not auto rotate

UPDATE: So 7 days ago I decided to exchange my THIRD faulty S6 Edge to Regular S6. Am happy to report that after using it for one week there's no problem so far with auto rotation despite having it plugged for hours on normal charger and frequent usage of the fast charger (as there are speculations that it is hardware issue triggered by fast charging). I am concluding that the problem only affects S6 Edge.
Good luck guys!

My S6 Edge doesn't have the auto-rotate issue.
I only charge it using the wireless charger connected to the fast charger.

Good luck guys!

I had the same rotation problem with a regular S6 after 5 days of use. I have returned it and will get another one the day after tomorrow.

Normal charging, is that plugging in the device in the USB port of a laptop?

As others have stated, by using the hardware test, you can see that the accelerometer is stuck. To verify, enter "*#0*#" in your phone app to enter hardware test mode. Touch "Sensor". The X, Y and Z for the accelerometer must all change in rapid succession as you rotate your phone. If any are stuck on 32767 or -32768, you have a HARDWARE problem which cannot be fixed by updates of software/firmware of ANY kind.

I'm on my 3rd S6 edge. It appears that they work out of the box but if you do a fast charge (making the battery very hot), the accelerometer chip seems to break. It might be the placement of the chip in relation to the battery, or it's possible that the chip maker just had a bad batch. Not sure if Samsung is using Invensense chips or not but I'm sure this is going to be something more than a little problem for Samsung and the chip maker if the numbers grow. It's possible this is only on the edge, which would lower the problems for Samsung.

I have this problem and confirm -32768 on the Y axis. Got the Edge from Telstra Australia. also got 2 other Edge phones but yet to deploy them to staff. will call Samsung.

contacted 2degrees, New Zealand. they say I was the 1st to have contacted them about the problem. so they sent my phone away for repairs. contacted Samsung aswell and the factory reset obviously did not work. they said I should get a replacement but I did not. now without a phone for 2-3 weeks. great.. I don't want an S6 either, if the s6 edge is bugged. then no more Samsung for me.

Is it me (probably) and cannot do this hardware test on my brand-new friggin Galaxy S6?! What am I doing wrong? I certainly can no longer auto-rotate from portrait to landscape. P!$$es me off, especially when I'm running BT to car.

I am now using both my wireless charger and fast charger and its still fine..... My problem for an entirely different thread is how a phone with so much grunt can still jitter and stutter when doing the most common things. Opening up an app like FB causes a momentary black screen before launching, same with other social apps, stock messenger app and textra. I love this phone but geez Android / touchwiz can just come off looking completely unpolished compared to iOS

Ok, I held one of these in a T-Mobile store and I fell in love. Now I am having horrible flashbacks to the Samsung Epic (The First Galaxy S on Sprint) while reading this thread.

Everything about that phone was buggy. Even the updates that were supposed to "fix" the bugs created more bugs.

I want to give Samsung another chance and I was going to do it possibly with this phone since it seemed like their quality had improved and their responsiveness to issues was light years ahead of where they were with the terrible Epic failure.

Now it seems like the same old Samsung I knew back then. They have a major known issue or a set of major known issues. They are pretending like each customer who complains is the first customer to bring those issues to them. And there seems to be no fix in sight.

Oh well, I guess I will continue to hang on to my HTC EVO 4g LTE. At least it rotates.

Darn, I really thought they had won me back.

After exchanging my gold 64gb s6 edge for the second time (so I am on my third one), it has been working for over 24 hours. This is longer than my 2nd one lasted. Everything worked on the first two, except the screen rotation stopped working after a couple days on the first one and about 24 hours on the second one.

The difference this time is that I have NOT fast charged it or updated it.
So far, so good. Let's hope it stays this way, I would like to avoid a third trip and exchange to best buy, haha.

I have had my phone for a month now and my camera was like reversed and upside down also it would not rotate.. Called Samsung they couldn't do much and transferred me to my carrier who told me to bring the phone in smh..

Anyway here's what I did myself and everything works again

Power off the device
Once off.. Hold down the power button, home button and up volume button at the same time
Let got of all buttons except volume when the little android guy pops up
After like 10 seconds let go of volume..
Now it will turn to a black screen with commands
Use the volume button to navigate
Choose clear cache
Use the power button to select that command
Then reboot it
And wala.. Now my rotate and camera works! No need to switch phones! Hope this helps yall

so I will get my replacement in the mail within a couple of days. have been without it for 17 days so far. and stuck with my slow arse iphone 4. The big question is 1. should I not open box, and send phone back for a refund? all I see on these forums are problem after problem. (this is my 1st replacement, not looking forward to another one and additional days without a good phone).

See how it goes i reckon, but make sure you don't fast charge it!

Problem described:
I bought the S6 edge 1 month ago and for 3 weeks had no trouble with screen rotation. The majority of charges were done via wireless charging, but a few were done with the rapid charger that came in the box, and a few on a car charger. In the 4th week, I started experiencing screen rotation issues in a variety of apps. Initially, it was just "sticky" so I had to keep tipping, re-tipping to get it to rotate 90 degrees but eventually the symptoms got worse. Unlike some other users, my phone was never frozen in one rotation position so if I opened an app in one orientation, I could keeping viewing the app in that orientation. The best test scenario were photos in Gallery where it became more and more difficult to rotate a portrait photo 90 degrees if I opened Gallery in landscape mode. If I rotated the phone 180 degrees it WOULD respond and deliver the correct orientation but I couldn't do 90 degrees. There are so many postings that describe how to access the "secret" test menu via *#0*# on the phone dialer but this does NOT work on Verizon. So I downloaded a sensor app (Sensor Kinetics) to be able to see if X or Y coordinates on the accelerometer were frozen (like other users report). In my case, none of my coordinates were frozen but the symptoms kept getting worse.

Attempts to fix the problem
I spent several hours reading postings on many different forums and believe I tried everything (soft reset, cleared cache, booted in safe mode, installed "rotation lock adaptive free" and set in "stock auto", eventually did a factory reset. None of these had any impact on my screen rotation problem. So I went to the Verizon store where I bought the phone. The Verizon rep immediately acknowledged this as known issue with the S6 Edge and said it was a Samsung problem, not a Verizon problem so I needed to call Samsung. From reading other postings, dealing with Samsung would involve sending the phone to their repair facility in Texas and waiting for them to repair the phone and it back (meaning days without a phone). I pushed harder to get Verizon to help me out. Because I was beyond the 14-day exchange period, it became clear there was no way they were going to give me a replacement phone at the store (or let me get the regular S6). The rep disappeared into the back of the store and came back with a post-it note with the 1-800-SAMSUNG written on it and stated "we just sell the phone" and there was nothing they could do. I'm on the Verizon Edge plan (meaning I paid nothing when I got the phone and am making monthly payments so I'm basically leasing the phone from Verizon) so I pushed harder that this WAS a Verizon issue because my < 1 month old leased phone was no longer working properly. He eventually disappeared into the back again and this time came out and said Verizon would take care of the problem via a warranty repair. I would get a "like new" phone (I wasn't too concerned about not receiving a new phone since the S6 edge had only been available in the U.S. for 1 month). Two days later, a brand new S6 Edge arrived via FedEx with instructions to return the other phone within 5 days. The screen rotation works great on the new S6 Edge. I will NOT be using the "Fast Charger" that came with the phone EVER on this new phone given the many online postings suggesting that fast charging damages the accelerometer, creating a hardware, not software issue. I'll update this post in a few weeks to report on how the S6 Edge without fast charging behaves. There are suspicions that Samsung will come up with a software fix by using other sensors on the phone to compensate for the broken accelerometer (sounds like Sprint may have already pushed out this type of fix) but this workaround seems lousy for such an expensive phone.

My pre-ordered S6 Edge from Sprint worked fine for about a month. Then it stopped rotating (flat-line on X axis of accelerometer).

Took it to Sprint. They sent a replacement. Flat-line on Y axis out of the box. Called the Sprint store back. They claimed they had information that it IS a software problem and there will be a patch (no ETA).

I didn't buy it, so contacted Samsung. They've asked me to ship the phone to them for repair. Hoping by this time they've seen enough of these that they'll know how to fix it right. I'll let you know in ~10 days.

Actually I found a very easy fix for me. Worked like a charm.. Simply download "rotation lock adaptive free" from the play store. Set it to "stock auto" and hit save. Then test it out. As you can see its not hardware at all. It's software. Now to perminently fix the issue, simply uninstall "rotation lock adaptive free". Since you saved the setting as "stock auto", it's using the stock rom's auto rotate. Un installing the app simply keeps the auto rotate working and locked it back in place. You are now good to go and you don't have to wipe data. Hope this works for everyone like it did for me.

Dude, you were sooo right. Your suggestion totally fixed my S6 (not Edge)! Thanks so much. Big relief! Think you are the only one with an answer in this whole thread.

I have been a fan of Samsung devices since I got my Note 3. For the first several days of having my Verizon S6 Edge in black with 128 gb; I was really loving it too.. And then...Auto rotate issues.

History:
Received my device on Friday May 15. First thing plugged in with the included charger. It had about 50% charge out of the box, and I was amazed how quickly it charged with the new rapid charger. I then successfully charged it with the rapid charger for the next four days (through Tuesday the 19th.). Usually taking roughly an hour and a half, and only charging once below 15% charge, and only removing from charger when charged. No issues with auto rotate.
On Wednesday the 20th, I charged it in the exact same manner as all the other days. But on this 5th day of doing a full charge; my auto rotate will only go to landscape and not back to portrate. Interesting note: on this charge it did something different than before. When it reached 100% it still said it had 6 mins left, so I let it do the extra 6 mins until it said "charged". Anyway, I looked up the issue here, and read everything.
None of the software remedys fixed my problem. And the keypad code doesn't work to access sensor info. So I installed "Sensor Kinetics" to view my sensor info. Oddly enough all sensors seemed to be operating, Although probably not as the should be.
spoke to Samsung, suggested since within my 14 day return policy with carrier; that I should exchange with them. Samsung's solution at this time is to have you send phone to them for repair, and I would be without it for a while. No mention of an update fix.
When I went into the store, the first thing he said was this is a known issue, and to wait for an update from Samsung. I let him know any update fix is only a work around for a non operating accelerometer, and that since I am still under 14 days; I want an exchange for a new phone. He agreed, although they are not in Stock in store, but that's a whole other story, important thing is that I will be getting a new phone, but need to continue to use the faulty one for a while.

So here are some more interesting details, and as I will continue to use the phone a while, I will update with any new findings:
On the 6th day after doing a full rapid charge, the phone will not auto rotate at all not even to landscape only like it was before. And looking at sensor info, shows y axis frozen.
On the 7th day, rather than wait until it had discharged below 15% I started charging it when it was around 35%. Since I have been constantly trying to fix this, I took a look at things while charging... Here is what happened, and this is by no means a fix... On this charge cycle at about 60% the auto rotate started working normally! Verified this on the sensor read out as well... (Did the rapid charger refuse the fried components?)... And then,,, when it reached about 70 or 80 % charge it would only auto rotate to landscape and never back to portrait, just as before. And then when it reached 90% and still after 100% it no longer auto rotates at all. If I look at the sensor info, none are locked, BUT y axis is not getting much movement, it isn't flatlined, but it is almost dead, and auto rotate is not working as a result.

Here's what I think...
Definitely related to the rapid charger. I witnessed the rapid charger fix the damage it had done, and then fry it again. You will have a hard time convincing me it is not the charger. Anyway, I hope this can help someone else.
For now I will wait for my replacement, and not use the rapid charger, until Samsung can assure me it will be ok, and then reluctantly, and definitely before warranty is up. It's a shame, as this was advertised as the best phone ever... Hopefully it's not the phone that breaks me away from my Samsung allegiance. ..

Oh... And BTW: I can also hear/feel something moving around inside my phone when lightly shaken, as someone else mentioned in this thread. Not sure if it did this out of the box, or started with the auto rotate issues.

Thank you Sir! This simple solution fixed my auto rotation issue (and saved me the headache of an exchange)!

First, the screen rotation is on. But photos, webpages, most apps will not auto rotate when I turn my phone landscape. Only app that it works in is you tube, when you view the video in full screen. Then it tends to lock up and get stuck. I've done all the software updates, rebooted a dozen times, turned auto rotation on and off .... any advice?
Ichibanhebi's solution worked for my S6 Edge!

Unfortunately, Ichibanhebi solution did not work for my phone. After running a system update check this morning and updating to software version G925VVRU1AOE2 the auto-rotation on my phone again appears to be working for most items. Photos, Webpages, and various Apps, which were previously stuck in portrait mode now appear to be rotating correctly. Have not tried to fast charge the phone yet to see if the problem comes back.

Still appears to be an accelerometer issues - "Clinometer" app level function doesn't work properly and "Phone Tester" app still indicates that the Y accelerometer is updating, but not as fast as the X and Z and the value still hovers around 39.2 ,

Carrier: Verizon

I lost rotation last week, during my trip out of the US. It just stopped working. I found this forum and read a lot of posts with similar issues. I followed several of the suggestions but none helped to restore my rotation.

Just now Verizon and Samsung offered an upgrade which I downloaded and installed. It corrected the failure of the pictures and other screens to rotate.

Seems to have totally fixed the problem so I signed up for this forum and want you to all know of the correction issued by Samsung. I'm sure glad I did not have to return my phone as so many others have.
