Root SBF'D back to 2.2 (now what??)

Thinking of trying a few themes (only) first. Im not unhappy with blurr really... first I need to do some serious cleaning and backing up... do I need to re-deodex for a theme?

You need to deodex if on stock rom. Custom roms are already deodexed de-bloated and optimized. Some roms remove all blur and you might not like that. (I don't.) Some roms come already themed, like Apex has a dark gingerbread theme.

According to superuser:
AdFree
CacheMate
Droid X Bootstrapper
Rom Manager
SetCPU
Shootme
Titanium Backup (Which I also don't know how to use)
Wireless Tether
ZR4oot.

I did root via z4root (I think) after ther OTA............ maybe I was still rooted after the OTA?

I know of no-one who had root that worked after the OTA. They all had to redo it and I believe z4 is the only app that works with OTA.

You might try updating adfree or shootme and see if they have supervisor privileges.

Just set Titanium to do a full backup once a week. The free version only keeps one backup so that might not be what you want, but it's better than nothing.

Okay. So in order..... root, wipe out the sd card(backups ), create a backup oem flash... then de-odex. 340, and theme up. Really want to do a rom, but I want functionality for the basic stuff..

re-rooted via Z4root, did everything again - same results. One thing I'm seeing is tht while Rom Manager is on the screen, that little red circle continues to go round and round?
Maybe uninstall and re-install or even reboot to factory settings?

I assume you mean wipe backups prior to .340? Then yes.

I like Apex and it's already themed as Gingerbread and a lot of themes available. Easier than deodexing.

That circle is probable the ads from the free version of RM, but blocked by adblocker. I need to reread your posts before I can comment more. I still have multitasker .8 beta. :D

I'd uninstall any rooting programs, reboot and reroot. It should take minutes to complete rooting. You can speed it up by pulling/inserting your battery during this time. Seems to me you're replying too quick for reroot to actually be working.

One thing I forgot to do was re-set the lcd density to stock.... I ran it bigger and had a nice looking font... does it matter now?

do I need to copy the backed up files from Titanium or mybackup pro to my computer hard drive first.
I've got z4root on the SD card and my computer both, so I'm safe there, right?

A rom or flashing a sbf might change it back, but as you probably found out, some apps don't like the altered size, but you probably already know that. I wouldn't worry about it.

Your data is as secure as your sd card. You could copy it to your computer. I've done that with my recovery backups. Just make sure you copy the entire folder for each.

superuser did not unistall, but the only program with permissions is mybackup pro. should I now run z4root or factory reset?.
Again, I can't thank you enough !

I did install/open z4root. first it said temporary root or permanent, then was granted superuser permissions and now says re-root or unroot?

Superuser will be hard to uninstall.

I'd try to work with what you have. Factory reset means the phone will be like it was when you brought it home.... all settings and apps lost. They will start to trickle in from Market, if they're still available.

I'd try to reroot now.

If it was granted su, then try tapping the top button in recovery again. We want it to say it was granted su again.

I did the temporary root successfully, so should reboot and run it again for permanent or try to do the rom manager backup?

I see no reason for a temp root.

Permanent root will help with backup/restore of files with your backup program and takes too long to do a temp root every time you want to create a backup from recovery or rom manager.

Besides, if you load your image from RM, you'd have to re-root again. Might as well do it now.

Finally got a back up, went through DroidX Bootstrapper, rebooted and the option came up to back up, etc. Used Rom Manager to change the name. So, now do I just use Rom Manager to download/install Apex?
thanks again,
c

It's entirely to you. You should know how to do it both ways.

You can download via your computer and copy it over or download thru the paid version of RM and apply it when it's done downloading. Free version lets you install a rom, but not download.

almost always buy the full versions, I like to pay for the work other people do, so I have the full version. Downloaded both ApeX 1.3.1 and Gummyjar (although I can't find the GJ folder). After each download, it asked me if I wanted to back up my current rom and/or clear cache and data. Do I?

I think you're ok to not clear/reset for Apex (if you're flashing from stock rom), but you should for Gummy.

k, thanks. Might wait until this evening to do it, but I'm close, very close!
do you know it it's going to ask me if I want to back up my system again, or should I do that on my own (so I have two, just in case)..............
