Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

Oh I've had a fun day. I did find a CM. I also loaded and played with Viper, MIUI, Wolf. I've returned to Nils. Will play with this for a while and when I get bored I'll load another for a while.

I've never been happier :)

nils has been one of my favorite devs since the original incredible,im glad hes still doing roms. business sense has always been one of my favorite sense roms :)

i managed to unlock my bootloader i believe, but im not certain.

how can i check?

at the beginning of this thread there was a section about temporary revovery instead of permenent so that you could keep stock recovery after root.

It appears to be missing now. could you post the procedure again please?

which recovery should i use?
where should i get superuser app from and where do i put it?
how do i install it once in recovery?

im sorry if this can all be found somewhere else, but i promise i have tried and found only bits and pieces which i am afraid to try an assemble this process on my own.

the rezound root is far more involved than my OG droid and i don't want to miss something

when you adb reboot bootloader to fastboot,or power on manually to hboot via vol down/power you will see ***unlocked*** at the top of the bootloader screen

its still there. somehow there is an extra show spoiler in the temporary recovery section. ill fix that here in a few,but all you needed to do was click the show spoiler,then the second one that popped up

the app is automatically installed when you flash the .zip file linked in the download these files section at the top of the post.

how do i install it once in recovery?
place it on the root of the sd card,launch the recovery,then follow the directions in step 3 flash superuser zip files

its actually not more involved,its just looks like alot from the long,attempt to explain every detail,directions.

theere are only 3 basic steps:
1)unlock bootloader
2)boot or install recovery
3)install superuser
wich is about as basic as it gets by root standards! :D

just follow the first post directions slowly and carefully,and you shouldnt miss anything :)

I have 4.0.3, and I am having problems getting tethering to work, I have read these posts, and am not sure if the latest amon ra is the culprit or not. I successfully unlocked the phone, flashed amon ra, and su, but every tether program I've tried starts with errors, and it never shows up on other devices. I would greatly appreciate any advice on finding out where I went wrong. Thank You.
 
sorry i cant help you with the tethering,as it can be considered the theft of a service the carrier offers. i can tell you amon is not the culprit. all you need for any root app to work,is the ability to grant permissions.

sometimes certain apps work better than others,and sometimes the settings have to be set just right. do some searching in the forum here,and in the rezound root section on xda,im sure you will find what youre looking for :)

prolly that you simply downloaded the superSU app from the market,and did not install the zip file in recovery,wich is a common error.

i know the thread suggest the easiest way is to simply install from the market,but it is refering to rooted users. you need to download the zip file at the link described,place it on the root of your sd card,and then use the recoverys menus to flash it :)

I had the correct file on the card, but it didn't load right I guess. I flashed it again and it worked that time. I am still having problems finding a product that works, but I will check the threads. Thanks again for the help!

after reading a Reddit post about unlimited data plans (upgrading from my then 3g to my now 4g (which i cant share due to my noob status)), i grabbed a used Rezound and went to work. I was unable to use Wifi Tether (Foxfi) for whatever reason so I went to the webs to find a root solution.

your guide was as noob friendly as they come! I havent DOS Prompted since DOS itself and was a bit skittish. i am rooted and tethered and wanted to say thank you.

Tell me youll be doing a guide for the HTC One in a couple months? =D

Scotty, The battery on my Rezound went completely dead today before I noticed. It was a a couple of hours before I was able to charge it. It would not charge. When I got home put in a fresh battery from my home charger...still would not start up. Still have stock recovery on phone. It's now sitting on my desk with the battery out until morning. Any ideas? I have two lines ....so I can use my Note 2....but sometimes it is a little "big" ..lol. Really like the Rezound...but it might be "dead".:( If it doesn't come up tomorrow...guess I'll call Asurion and see what insurance can do for me...lol
 
Mine does that on occasion,if it dies completely. Leave it plugged for a few minutes until you get a charge light. Then just keep trying to turn it on. When mine does it,I seem to have better luck getting it started into hboot(power/vol down). From there select fastboot,then reboot phone.

I've also heard of adb commands working in this situation. Open a cmd window,cd to miniadb,and try adb reboot or adb reboot bootloader
 
I found the steps I need! I'm still currious over the size difference.

So I'm thinking of going to CM 10.1 on XDA My phone is on RA 3.15 and is S-off. I just need a refresher. I guess I backup with RA, wipe in RA rename the download to PH98IMG, then load it in RA under the Zip menu? I also notice this ROM is much smaller than the ICS one I loaded last year, 612mb v 232mb

Ph98img files are only flashed in hboot ;)

S-off procedure:
-put Rom on sd card
-boot to recovery
-make backup
-wipe cache,dalvik cache,factory reset
-flash Rom
-reboot
-enjoy :)
 
So why doesn't anyone mention that you can temporarily boot into a new recovery and flash roms while s-on? It seems like this thread is the only one that mentions it (that I can find anyway). I'm looking through roms on XDA.

Do people assume that you've already replaced your recovery with something other than stock?

thats an excellent question,ive never understood it either. i first noticed the evo 3d gang advocating to fastboot boot recovery to flash roms,so as soon as i got a rezound i tried it. it worked for restoring backups,the kernels definately were being restored.

the biggest prollem,was rom devs did not script roms for s off install(i.e. having recovery install the boot image) since it was well kown that s on did not allow it.

so for a long time,it didnt matter that the booted recovery could flash the boot image,as the roms were not designed to install it.

its only been since s off was achieved,that roms were scripted to install the boot image,allowing this technique to work.

as to why its not recomended on xda,my only guess is that its a case of "weve always done it this way". folks want to have a permantly installed custom recovery,thats how its always been,and weve always fastboot flashed the boot images ;)

i always flashed roms on my s on rezound in the manner i recomend :)
 
Well it worked great for me! But now I'm considering flashing TRWP so I can get OTA updates from wildstang. It's not difficult to get back to stock recovery right? You would just get the stock recovery .img file and flash it should you want to go back?

yup... you can flash back to the stock recovery as easily as you permantly flash twrp or amon. only thing to keep in mind is that the recovery will not be able to install the kernels,so if the OTAs include a new boot image,then the recovery cannot install it. prolly not too big deal,as the kernel prolly doesnt change much,and they prolly will be compatible if it does.

i peronally am not a fan of the dumlock flashing. basically all its doing,is installing recovery in the boot partition,so its able to install the boot image,very similar to fastboot booting recovery with the PC. IMO the steps to make it work are cumbersom,its more straignt forward to launch the recovery from the PC and just flash the rom without all the steps to enter dumlock recovery,and restore your stock boot image. but thats just my humble opinion ;)

if you want to install twrp and try the OTAs go ahead. my advice would be to NOT mess with htcdumblock and simply fastboot boot either amon or twrp whenever you want to restore or flash a rom with a new kernel :)
