that is just weird then. i never had any issues with setcpu. so it will not let you overclock or underclock? have you tried to uninstall and reinstall setcpu? have you tried to wipe dalvin cache and cache?

I'm a bit confused... In setcpu the max and min is over and under clocking right? With gold monkey 1.1 installed my max/min went from 998/245 to 1260/128 ... Yesterday as soon as i touched it to 1260 it shut down... Now I'm running around 860/128 because a) I'm afraid to overclock it and b) because i dont have a real need to overclock and would prefer to save battery..
But I don't like that i have to be so cautious with this because it sounds like going over 998 shouldn't be a problem but it was at 998 the first time, yesterday morning, it went to that bootloop...

Maybe I'm not being clear enough here... Does this make sense or am i not explaining this right or leavong something out?

Most can overclock to 1152 and some can go to 1190 but anything over that for 99% of the Evos will send them into a bootloop. Your bootloop might be related to something else. You can try and uninstall SetCPU and see if it still does it.

xtreme is correct 1260 is way to higheven though setcpu lets you do it does not mean you can. mine works at 1190 any higher it freaks out.

998 should never cause a bootloop nor would a kernel do it. it is definitely some else that caused it.

if you want to save battery use a screen off profile. i have mine set to 128/245.

Is 998 what the phone would use before root and setcpu?
What's a max I can use that will save battery and give me normal functionality? I realize I'll just have to do some tweaking to find my personal happy ground on it but just a suggestion on a round about figure?

One last one and ill leave ya alone... Ondemand performance and conservative or whatever the other ones are... I'm on ondemand now because it defaults to that but i don't have a clue the difference in them and how that makes my phone respond to needing power... So with my usage would I be better off using a different setting there?

anything in the 1000-1152 should be fine. and as for governors that will depend on the kernel. golden monkey only has ondemand as the default. while freedom kernels have interactivex and smartass governors.

check out this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html

interactive governor is new to me so i need to check up on that. unless someone here can chime in what that is.

Other than what problems could arise from going lower? Im at 800and looking to lower to save battery

if you keep going lower the phone could get laggy and unresponsive if you go to low. i'm overclocked to 1190 with a screen off profile and i'm getting 14-16 hours of battery life with moderate usage. i think the screen off profile is the key to getting better battery life. i have it set to 128/245.

yeah. Try the safemode with an empty file called "setcpu_safemode" Details are up a few posts. Basically: Open notepad, save file (empty) as "setcpu_safemode" and save it without a .txt extension (so click all files (.*)). When windows *shows* extensions, it should say "setcpu_safemode".

Place that file on the root of your sd card. Checkout azakabam's and evomattnc's posts for more info.

this is what i was needing, spelt out! :p thx, i'll try that!

Cool, hope it works. I tried to upload one, but couldn't, forums don't allow files without extensions I guess.

I do believe the evos stock kernel puts them at 998.
Lol, I always go with smartass if its an option. No reason other than it's called "smartass". I haven't looked into the differences between the modes in a while (I knew it when I first started using setcpu... I wanna say there was a thread on here or xda about it. Or maybe on the setcpu page or something. Maybe in the help or some option within the app???).

Well, I am playing it cool with the settings for now, I don't play games so I don't need to overclock, think my prob was cluttered caches, cause clearing them is all I did different when it finally worked. In case I get brave and overclock and screw up, there is a safetynet, so thanks!

As long as your current ROM is zipped on your sd card then you can always boot in recovery and wipe dalvik and cache then re flash the ROM you shouldn't need to do anything more... I had to do that like 3 times yesterday but it worked every time
