Root Set CPU question...

Hi all,
I rooted with unrevoked and I was wondering if I have to flash a Rom etc. To use set CPU to improve battery life and speed? If so, which Rom would you suggest for a noob rooter ,who wants better battery life and speed? Thanks for the help...

Certainly don't need to but you can. Otherwise you just have to disable perflock in set cpu then your can under clock

Thanks so much for the help. What should the scaling be set to?? What would you suggest for the settings for best performance? Thanks again. All this is so new to me. What Rom and kernel would you suggest?

That's up to your use really, someone can give more info but I just use a screen off profile set to 245-245. Not sure what your governor options are, might want to try interactive or on demand...I can give a LOT more detail later but I'm at the beach atm

well depending on your kernel i would not go under 245 (some setups you can though ) you might get stuck in boot loops.. and same applies going over like 1160 .. other rhen that jjust experiment

as far as rom and kernel combo:
for sense
roms:mikforyo or kings unleashed
kernel: netarchy toastmod kernels

as for aosp(non-sense):
roms: kings gb cm7 or cm7 (would recomend first blood or darkhorse)
kernel:tiamat or savage zen

just keep in mind that not all kernels will react the same on my phone as it does on your phone. so you may have to play around with some kernels before you find the right one. give it a few charge cycles before you settle down on a choice of kernels. the setup in my sig has been awesome so far.

edit: ref#3 in my sig has some kernel terminology and ref#2 has all of the current roms and kernels out there

Certainly read about the different kernel terminology. Basically, you do not need a custom ROM if you don't want one. This is more dependent on the kernel. If you stick with the stock kernel, you will have to disable the perflock, which is what locks the min/max frequency settings. If you unlock that, you can change the minimum and maximum frequency within a set range. That range on the stock kernel is limited to 245 for min and 998 for max. This means that you can underclock, if you want, but more commonly, it is used to set the min/max to 245/245 while the screen is off. You can also use any of the other profiles in setcpu. What it doesn't allow you to do is overclock. These speeds are the available governors (scaling) are defined by the kernel. If you want other scaling options, and the ability to overclock, you must flash a different kernel. Most custom kernels have the max available frequency set higher than 998. They also provide more governors. Read some of those kernel links for information on how to use them properly.

Wow, lots of great advice. Thank you all for the info. I guess I better read up all the kernel info. I read the rooting for dummies for 3 weeks before getting up the nerve to root. Lol.
Maybe I will get braver and try roms and kernels in the next day or so. Thanks again for all the help. That's why this forum is a cut above the rest, everyone is so helpful.

I haven't changed anything on my set CPU. It says 998min. And 998max. I should change those settings to 245 correct?? Thanks
I'm thinking of flashing kings unleashed in a min. Hope it goes well...

The default min should be 245. If it's 998 for min, for some reason, you should make it 245. It's a major waste of battery life to leave it as high as 998. As for max, just leave it there, unless you want to try and save battery life by making it a little lower.

Where can I find the download link for Kings unleashed? Can I do this ota? I have not read anywhere that I will lose my 4g etc. with this Rom, so Id like to try it. How important is it for me to factory reset my phone again before flashing this Rom? I just reset it last night before unrevoked. I guess its for a clean install of the Rom ..right?
Thanks for the help...:)

Search is your friend! :)

King's UNleashed R5

This is not done OTA. Download the file and place it on the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup (always, always, always do a nandroid prior to flashing a ROM) and then perform the following. Wipe all/format all, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and then flash KingsFORMAT all. After those steps have been performed, you can then flash the Kings ROM.

Yes...you do want a clean install of the ROM. The only time you don't have to do a complete wipe is if you're going to a new version of the same ROM and then all you have to do is wipe cache and dalvik cache.

Oops...meant to add another link for you. I mentioned in my previous post that you need to flash the King's Format All but left out the link. Here it is:

KingsMOD Format All

Steps again:
1) Download the Unleashed ROM and the KingsMOD Format All
2) Place both on the root of your SD card.
3) Boot into recovery and perform nandroid backup
4) Wipe All/Format All
5) Wipe cache
6) Wipe Dalvik Cache
7) Flash the KingsMOD Format All zip file
8) Flash the Unleashed ROM
9 Reboot and enjoy :D

Is there any real difference between Kings format all and caulkins format all (not sure on the spell there, I think caulkins is right)?

I'm not 100% sure TBH. I have always just flashed King's Format All when using King's-based ROMs. As for all other ROMs I use Caulkins. :)

They're almost exactly the same. There's really only one way to do what those types of update scripts do, so... You can use either one you want in any situation.
