Root Should I Root?!

Hey guys. I'm not new to the forums but I am new to the Droid X (Well, I've had it for about 3 months now, and I LOVE it)

I used to have a G1, and I had it rooted, and although there was a lot of cool things you can do to a Rooted phone, I ended up un-rooting it and bringing it back to stock, because The G1 was just too slow to really make use of anything cool. Now that I have a Droid X, which is MUCH faster, I again, am struck with the curiosity of Root.

My question, Should I root my Droid X and why? Its already fast, but I'm wondering if It can be even faster, and if rooting the Droid X is even worth it. There are a few things that have really been bugging me lately about it though, for instance, CONSTANTLY having to run Advanced Task Killer because apps that I don't even use are running in the background. I'm hoping there is a Root App that will solve this.

Root lets you backup, freeze and restore system apps and create recovery backups (images of your entire phone). It also lets you install custom roms and themes so your X can be fast and look the way you want. The downside is you can also trash your phone if you're not careful (but we're pretty good at getting you back up and running, should that happen and we work cheap). What's there not to like about root? :D
 
Its all about you really. I did mine because I wanted it to be as me as possible. Its fun to play around and make yours. Yeah it gets fastera good bit. You can get lots better battle life and all sorts of other good stuff. Just search around here and you'll see
 
Well i use Handcent SMS to customize my Texts, I use Dolphin HD Browser for Customer Internet. I have Open Home Full to Customize my Home screen, Dock, Icons and Themes...so my phone is pretty much decked out custom without rooting. I also have PC, PSX, and Gameboy Emulators and Roms as well without Rooting. My phone is still very fast. I have a Live wallpaper running 24/7 and I get amazing battery Life out of my phone.

I guess the main thing im interested in Rooting is to see if I can get a significant Speed increase. Im not worried about Bricking my phone, because I know how to read directions and do it correctly ;)
 
Then here is my recommendation:


  • Get rooted. Z4Root seems to work for most people.
  • Install recovery aka bootstrap.
  • Install rom manager. It does a great job of managing (create, rename, delete) your recovery backups.
  • Install Titanium Backup, open it and press the menu button and make a backup of "all apps + all data".
  • Open recovery (DroidX bootstrap), tap the top button, should say you were give supervisor permission, followed by success. Tap the second button to go into recovery. Vol up/down button moves cursor, back button goes to previous screen, camera button does what the cursor is highlighted. Select return and press camera button.
  • Open rom manager and create a backup. Call it stock_02-20-2011 (don't use spaces). Make sure the backup completes. Should take a couple minutes. If it reboots right away, it did not work.

Then think about what kind of rom is right for you. Most of us recommend Apex as a good first rom.
 
I don't think I had my X a full week before I rooted it. I'm unemployed right now and spent nearly all day messing with the phone so, after a few days, I got bored and decided to just jump in head first and root.

It's a personal choice whether to root or not but I've not heard of too many people regretting a successful root. This forum did wonders for my knowledge as this is my first android phone and nearly everything I know, I read here.

I think this guide could help you out greatly, especially the section about overclocking which is what I believe you're mostly interested in.

I think the people that didn't stay rooted were people who had a rough time getting rooted and found the whole uphill process intimidating. It's not for everyone (like my Mom and wife) :D
 
Right on. IT is fun...well...it can be, lol. When you arent pulling your hair out trying to figure out why one computer cant configure correctly but all the others can.

IT lets you play "God". You can tell a manager what they can and cannot do. :cool:

Sure, I'll need a photocopy front and back of all your cards. Make sure the 3 digit code on the back is readable... :D

Should I backup my Apps first. then Root? Or should I just bite the bullet, Root and reinstall everything?

follow his directions exaxctly and you will be fine,,,,,besides you need tibu to backup apps and you must be rooted to use tibu so root then backup:D

Another soul saved from VZW boring stock.
Now start looking at some nice Roms to fix that puppy such as
Apex 1.41 ,Liberty 1.5, TBH 3.7 and Fission.

IMHO Liberty Rom maybe the easiest to start with because of the toolbox.
 
I don't think i'm 'ready' yet to try roms..........I did it mainly to be ready for my new ipad so i could use wifi tethering. I plan on getting rid of the aps it won't let me delete and then try a few little things before attempting ROMS.
 
I've rooted and installed a custom ROM but can't get Titanium backup to bring my stuff back. Anyone know why this might happen? I go to batch and restore missing apps with data.. basically nothing happens.

I've never had any problems with TB... Have you tried a different batch operation? What ROM are you using? You should just ask this in a new thread, you'll probably get more help that way.

I like TB very much but NEVER restore all my apps with it. I prefer to take 5 minutes and let Google Market do the restore app thing. (ok 10 minutes) lol
When you do a blanket restore you restore the good stuff plus the bad issues you may have had. Especially data.
Some developers almost put a skull & crossbones on TB. Read the TBH forum.
Some apps restore with a framework setting that was for your old Rom and my not quite match your new Roms framework. IMHO

Be careful deleting apps, some control more than you think.
Blur has fingers al over the place and if you blow out or even freeze an app you may cause issues.
