Should I update to Gingerbread or not?

We have 2 X's in the house and neither one has been updated to Gingerbread. I spend too much time on various forums and to be honest, the negative posts about the update have made me apprehensive about updating. Is anyone happy with Gingerbread?

By the way, both X's are stock and have never been rooted.

Should I jump in and update, or be thankful I am still on Froyo?
 
I was just like u. Reading all the negative about gb, made me not want to install it,but I decided goto ahead with it anyways, and let me tell you I was missing out it's a lot faster smoother. Just install the rooted version of gb. So in my opinion you should definitely do it.
 
People tend to speak out more and louder when something goes wrong. GB does work for many of us. Upgrade, give it a try, and if you don't like it or it has issuedls on your phone.. sbf back to Froyo
 
The negatives will always be louder than those who have had positive experiences. I jumped on the first leak that was out and was amazed by it, even with stock it was as good as custom roms on FroYo. The blur improvements are great as well, it was actually usable.

It seems that each X handles software differently, I have never had any problems with my phone no matter what I throw on it. I would say there is a better chance that you will be happy with your choice to take the upgrade than being unhappy that you did.
 
The problem with going to various forums, is that you're always going to hear about the bad side of things. Very few people go onto a forum to say "Oh my, I love this!". The vast majority of people go on forums to say that things suck, something broke, they need help. GB is awesome.
 
I guess I'm in the other camp; if today I had the choice, I would not upgrade. To me, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

What exactly are these "disadvantages"? And if you don't like it, you can easily go back to FroYo.
 
Thanks for all the replies. You are making me feel better about giving GB a try. Did anyone do a factory reset prior to doing the OTA update? (Since the phone is still under warranty I don't want to root)

I didn't wipe when installing the pre-rooted two-part zips for Gingerbread (really thought I'd have to...was pleasantly surprised at that).

Its been fast, smooth, and stable for me on GB... I will say that Froyo was very stable and solid for me--only one spurious reboot on 2.2, but I've had a couple on GB, most of them I can attribute to times when I was connecting/disconnecting the USB cable (a known issue apparently tied to certain apps, but I'm not sure that I have any of the known ones)...but they've been few and far between.

Although, I am rooted, I have not installed any themes, ROMs, or overclocking...so I'm really pretty vanilla 2.3 when you get down to it.

I would think that the worst thing might be that you'd end-up needing to factory reset, but I'm hoping that you wouldn't (I've never had to factory reset on any of my phones, outside of the explicit wipes that I've done while installing custom ROMs on my Eris).

This thread has made me feel a lot better about updating my phone. Thank you everyone for your insightful replies. People like you really contribute to making this a great forum!
 
Well, I don't know what all bad stuff you have been reading about GB, but I love it. I haven't had ANY problems what so ever on GB. Like posted above, GB is much faster and smoother and battery life is really good. I recommend GB.

The new keyboard lags when typing, sometimes taking a second or two to enter the letter.

Contacts no longer has the ability to enter birthdays or other dates; Froyo did (why remove a feature in an update?). The dates that had been entered now appear as a gibberish series of numbers.

The hard button backlights no longer work properly; they either won't come on at all, or when they do, they are extremely bright.

It is sometimes slower to respond (open apps, swipe between screens, etc).

The camera always defaults when closed; it will not stay on 8MP.

Connectivity is less constant than it was.
And some others.
There are a few advantages I found, but - as I stated - for me - they're outweighed.

I'm not rooted, so I can't go back to froyo; I called Verizon, and they said there was no way to do that.

I wonder if build date may have something to do with the problems some people are experiencing. I am still on my original X (Sept. 2010).

Are the bright back lights a common problem?

I still haven't updated. No one wonder I was always the last kid in the pool as a child. Getting close though.

If it is actually taking that long for typed letters to come up then its not gingerbread...you have a bad install...

The process is the same for a non-rooted phone as it is for a rooted phone...you have to SBF and do a data wipe/factory reset...

Im out of the house right now so I don't have the time to list all the steps...but over in the root section there a eleventy billion threads and stickies on how to SBF our phones...

Just an FYI, but I am still running Froyo, rooted and overclocked/undervolted- and I see a Quadrant score consistently between 1700-1800, sometimes a bit higher. Perhaps this would improve even more with GB...:rolleyes:

Incidentally, I may at some point try GB, the 2-part rooted install. Still feel a bit concerned about the issues that some have reported - it would seem to me that on some DROID X's there are little/no problems where others have many, but I may still try soon and see what it will do to mine. I guess I can always flash back to Froyo if it causes more problems than it fixes...the random reboots and signal loss some have reported do cause me concern though.

Right now my phone is running great - sometimes there is some lag when changing home screens, but I've never lost a call and random reboots are something I've only experienced a couple times (and those were due to bad apps way back when the phone was new and on the Eclair OS). If/when I do try GB I'll share what happens...

yeah and what are you overclocked to?...because im pretty sure he is talking about scoring over 1600 with stock clock speeds...

i score from ~1900 at 1.1ghz on Gingerbread...at 1.165ghz i score consistent 2000+

I received a warranty replacement Droid X phone with the Gingerbread update and was quite pleased with the improvements especially with the text messaging and camera enhancements and contacts added features. The only draw back so far was that the camera roll feature in the Gallery App used to be integrated with you camera function, but now it is not. You have to go through the gallery app and select the picture folder labeled camera roll and then press the menu button and touch the camera icon to go to camera mode and then after taking a picture or two you have to press the back button back twice to go back into the gallery to have camera roll at your fingertips again. (Note: camera roll only works when your phone is horizontal. When your phone is vertical, your pictures are displayed as thumbnails. Press menu button to see how to select multiple pics for sharing) A bit of a hassle and I don’t understand why they separated this feature. I personally like camera roll because you can fly through your pictures with a swipe of your finger to get to a certain one you desire to look at.

The other thing I found out was different was how to link contacts manually. After selecting a contact you have to press the menu button and select edit and then press the menu button again and then select join and scroll to the contact you wish to link together.

I'm OC'd at 1.26 Ghz on Froyo - I'm sure if you 're running GB you're seeing what you claim...its all good:D. Also I understand he was talking about stock clock speeds - I was just saying that I'm pretty happy overall with the performance of my DX on Froyo, being rooted/OC/UV'd.

GB sounds like it works well for many, but messes up the phone for some. I would like to see if it improves mine, but I'm concerned about messing with a good thing and then having to go through the process of sbf'ing back to Froyo, etc. But I'm interested in hearing about people's experiences and perhaps I'll make the jump and try the rooted 2-part GB at some point.
