Root Simple unrEVOked 3 rooting for stock Incredible or Evo on 2.2

Great writ-up !! I just upgraded from a storm1 to the HTC Inc yesterday afternoon.. and thanks to this great write up I have now Rooted my phone :) ... and I am by no means a true tech junky..

Thanks again for the great write-up !!!

Thanks much for the response, it was a general question anyway :)

So when you do the " latest RUU or the quick load method (PB31IMG loaded through hboot)." it doesn't look for the app bloatware that I removed before it will install?

Sorry, just noticed your question. It doesn't care about any prior bloat removal. Stock loads up no matter what. You can be rooted, not rooted, on the stock Rom, custom Rom, none of it matters. You end up back on stock and no root.

I keep getting an error when flashing saying " is your firmware too new?" anyone?

EDIT: nevermind, finally worked. Took 4 tries

I ran unrevoked and it seemed to be working but then after 2 or 3 reboots it seemed to freeze up. I ran it in hboot and it says s-off but i don't have superuser app. Then i tried to back up and recover but then i just get a red triangle and exclamation mark on my screen.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

Ok... about to lose it!

I ran unrevoked. It seemed to be running right and then froze about halfway through... phone rebooted twice as opposed to the 4 times it was suppose to. I rebooted in hboot and it says s-off but i dont have the superuser app. And then when i try to select recover in hboot it goes to a screen with an image of a phone with a red triangle and exclamation mark.

Any suggestions?

Verify that you have an SD Card installed with at least 2Gb free space. If the SD is smaller than 4Gb, make sure it is FAT32 formatted. Look at it on your PC or Mac to be sure.

Do you have to have an SD card? If so, why?

Wow...I may have just averted a catastrophe. I installed the custom bootloader and was about to power down and run unrevoked when i decided to just do a little more reading. I came across the OP post and noticed you needed AT LEAST 2GB of space on the SD card.

As it is a 2GB SD card, I'm fairly certain that this doesn't suffice. Did I dodge a bullet or might this have worked??

You don't need 2gb free. Just at least a 2gb card with some free space.

Excellent instructions. Worked perfectly, and only took about 10 minutes including the backup.

Put this off for a while, because the instructions on the XDA forums were very confusing. Now, I see they were outdated.

Thanks so much for simplifying this.

Do you have a simple set of instructions for flashing a ROM?

Do you have a simple set of instructions for flashing a ROM?

1.) Download ROM to SD card. Much faster using USB cable and download to PC, then move to SD card. In a pinch, you can use Rom Manager to download it to the SD card. I do not recommend using ROM Manager to flash however but it's up to you.

2.) Open Clockworkworkmod (CWM). There are multiple ways of entering CWM:

a.) "Reboot into recovery" option in Rom Manager
b.) Turn of phone, then hold volume down while pressing power button to enter hboot. While in hboot, use volume buttons to highlight recovery option, then press power button to select. This will open CWM.
c.) Once you flash your first Rom, it may likely contain an expanded reboot menu that includes an option to boot straight into recovery. This is the method I most often use.

3.) Once in CWM, decide wether you are going to do a full wipe or not. If you are updating the same Rom most likely it's acceptable to wipe cache and Dalvik cache (under advanced menu in CWM), then proceed to load Rom. If you are changing Roms entirely or moving to a vastly different version, perform a full wipe of data, cache and Dalvik cache. So the actual flashing steps are as follows in CWM menu:

a.) wipe data/factory reset (if needed, see above)
b.) wipe cache partition
c.) advanced menu > wipe Dalvik cache
d.) install zip from SD card
e.) choose zip from SD card
f.) locate your Rom and flash
e.) reboot system now

Important tips when navigating hboot vs CWM menus:
In hboot, the power button is used to select menu items. In CWM, the trackpad button is used to select menu items and the power button is used to go backward one menu.

Thanks!

I flashed SkyRaider_4.0 and then I did the Incredikernal over that.
I'm pretty happy so far!

Just rooted my Incredible! Thank you SO SO much for this guide!

FYI to all, I got the "Is your firmware too new?" error. I just redownloaded and ran the reflash package again and all was peachy.

I'm the immigrant from a rooted (GSB) Eris, and was so satisfied with the Dinc that there seemed to be NO NEED TO ROOT. How could it get better? Well, the grass is always greener, so...

Thanks to these excellent instructions, which I read twice and followed once, this lovely little machine is rooting around like a trained and agile little piggy. The teams that put all this together have my gratitude. In fact, I'll crack open a nice cab this evening and drink it in your honor. Wish you could share it...

Was nervous but like everyone said this was easy!! Thanks so much for the right up!! One thing I did wrong was hold the power and volume down button too long and got 3 vibrations and nothing happened. I could not get it to boot got really scared! Took out the battery and it rebooted fine. Anyone know what I did??? And one more thing what is the bloat ware everyone is referring to? Is there a list somewhere?? Thanks again!!!!!

Accidentally holding volume up plus the power button will give you the 3 vibes...it's Qualcom diagnostics mode. You want volume down plus the power button.

The bloatware is all the crap on a stock rom that you will never use. Those apps take up memory.

About to try root using Unrevoked3. I will be doing this on my Linux machine running a fresh install of 10.04. Is there anything special I need to know? I already have the re-flash package ready to go on the desktop. The reason I want to use Linux is, from what I understand, the Hboot drivers are already there. When I open the reflash package, it states that "you may require Linux root access." Not sure what this means though.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You have to run the reflash package as "superuser"
