Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide

looking at the battery drain, what is the norm?

Mine seems to suck down faster when Im on wifi, why is this?

What is a good target to have the phone deep sleeping?

There is no, "norm", I'm afraid. Each users experience will be different according to the way they use their phone, the app's they have installed, the ROM they are using, the widgets they are running, the bloatware they have frozen, the signal strength they get.

Because the majority of my 24 hour day is spent within Wi-Fi range, my Advanced settings are, "Always", on. This I find saves the most battery for me.

I find that the stock Siyah, Battery Profile, setting is the best one for me. However, the kernel is only one part of a much larger picture when it comes to performance and battery conservation, as mentioned in this thread, here.

As for Deep Sleep, that depends on the factors mentioned in paragraph 1. For instance, I get around 1.5% battery drain per hour overnight whilst my arch nemesis, Hawker, and good old Syd get around 0.5% per hour overnight drain. This is down to features that I need or want and that they don't.

It can take months of trial and error to get the best configuration for your phone plus an awful lot of research and reading. Not to mention app's such as ExTweaks, BetterBatteryStats and CPUSpy.

Is it xda community that are driving him away or is it samsungs lack of disclosure?

Having followed gohanmoral, the developer of the Siyah kernel, religiously for well over a year now on the xda forum, I can honestly say that I would not stand for the battering he has received on there.

Unlike Android Forums, which is by-and-large, a very friendly community that is tolerant, over on xda it is like putting your hand in a tank of piranha's. They can ignore questions or be derisive or abusive as well as hyper critical and demanding.

Bear in mind that gokhanmoral has a full time job and a married life and has devoted his spare time to taking the SGSII kernel to a whole new level and has worked on it ceaselessly and issued countless releases for little or no reward or thanks, you can begin to see why he just might be fed up to the back teeth with it all.

In all my dealings with gokhanmoral, he has been polite, patient and helpful. More so than some that I can name. However, he has become a victim of his own success and the xda forum members have only themselves to blame for his departure from the S2 and S3.

I think gokhanmoral's own words sum it up best in his post, here...

And I don't want to have the most popular device which has a big crowded chatty and mostly irritating demanding and disgusting community. I would not release my first kernel if I knew I'd be in so many discussions and deal with all those dumbs who call themselves developers.

That explains it, I've never really frequented xda that often, only recently following the cm10 thread and obviously following links for downloads etc....

I have always seen it as a much harsher environment with people always slagging others.

I had no idea he was receiving do much flak :-(

It is a pity that we shall lose him, but I suppose others will benefit on a what ever phone he ends up purchasing!

Thats why i dislike Twitter and Facebook, faceless Trolls who hide behind the computer, gone are the days when you argue face to face and then scrap, shake hands and go for a pint, must be getting old.....thank god for this site i say

It is a mark of gokhanmoral's commitment to the Android community that, despite everything, rather than just walk away from the S2, he is devoting his time to one last Siyah kernel release for the Galaxy S2 prior to selling it.

He is having an S2 weekend next weekend, at the end of which he will release his last S2 kernel incorporating as many features as possible.

He is treating his followers better than some of them have treated him.

IMHO, that is the honourable way to go.

In my opinion, the S2 has/had 2 of the most friendliest, talented, helpful, committed and influential developers we could have ever hoped for, both of whom encapsulates the major areas of our device (ie. kernel and ROM) in Siyah's Gokhan and Neat ROM's Sale.

In many kernel releases, I would have numerous pm's and test versions from Gokhan as for some reason, if something would go wrong, my S2 would consistently duplicate the error. He was always very friendly and accommodating even through all of my undoubtedly numpty dumb questions.
I did however notice a change in him about 4 months ago (not with me personally, but on the thread as a whole) and my only amazement was that he held that back for so long considering the barrage of flak he would receive, totally unjustifiably.

My only hope now is the Neat thread does not go balls-up in a similar manner, and Sale continues in the manner we have become to love. He even bricked his device a few months back due to his commitment to release hot-off-the-press ROMs. Even after this, he continues his development in the same friendly helpful manner. Hat's off to you sir! :)

Remember folks, devs are doing this for their love of development, not for us or for personal gain. They owe us nothing. They are not at our beck and call at our each and every whim. If something they do doesn't work as expected, then this is not a cue to slate them. Report it, sure, but not in a rude or condescending manner. Its your decision to flash something. Its your own fault for flashing.

Treat devs with the respect they deserve, and don't just chip in to say something doesn't work. Tell them how good their product is too. Believe me, this makes a difference to them.

I can only hold Gokhan in the highest respect, esteem and admiration for all that he has done for us. Gokhan, you are a true gentleman amongst elite developers. You will be sorely missed, and I wish you all the very best for the future mate.
:adore: :congrats:

It looks like gokhanmoral hasn't given up on you just yet.

Yeah I wasn't expecting him to release anything after this one. But to be honest I expected him to just leave it at 4.1.5
Edit: completely missed that post by ironass. I can be so observant at times:D

i know it takes more than an hour to judge, but so far so good for me.....

so bad news for the rest of you

LOL Syd, I have read about your "Harry opposite" SGSII. I understand we can safely ignore any kernels, ROMs or tweaks that work well on your phone. ;).

First 24 hours and 0.75% per hour drain overnight. So far rock solid and slick, just as you'd expect from a gok kernel
