Sling Box owners rejoice!

So I went into the dealer to demo the VIP and do comparision between Dish and DirecTV. I mentioned your comment about the compression and he said if I had your number he would call you to tell you that that was not true. He didn't go into too much detail, but said that it really varies from channel to channel, and can be more or less compression on either receiver at anytime depending on what the two want to send out at the give time.

He also mentioned that so far he's only installed one of these receivers; although he had a 2nd one on Monday. The funny thing was that the one person who got it installed was the DirecTV rep for my market! Funny and makes you think!

That's why I said "supposedly". I was basing it on what's been posted, in most cases, on avsforum.com. "Varies from channel to channel" could just be 720p channels vs. 1080i. I have Comcast as well, and don't notice "much" difference on my Panny 700U. Dish's PQ is certainly not so bad that if the features/flexibility/pricing work for you, that the PQ would be a deal breaker.

I also like that with Dish boxes, you can install an OTA antenna, and record a cleaner feed as the box integrates OTA channels into its menu system (vs. just installing an antenna into the TV). That also allows you to watch OTA broadcasts "live" while DVR'ing (2) other channels at the same time. Pound for pound/$ for $, the Dish "system" is hard to beat...esp. when you throw in the external drives for additional "on-line" DVR content.

question on mobile app...

if i loose the phone or upgrade to a new one, do i need to buy the app again? That would suck.

Not sure, but I had to replace my Droid a few months ago (covered under warranty) and when I synced my google account with the new phone I was able to re-download other apps I had paid for previously at no extra cost.

I have a question, I am new to the sling box so not sure how it works. but say i have it installed and i am watching it through slingplayer at work on my phone. The people who are still at home are they limited to watch what i watch or can they still watch what they want? I am not sureif it is independant or if it controls everything remotely

they will be limited to view whatever it is you are viewing.

oh that sucks .... well then i will have to rethink this.. I got one from eby .. and we have two dvr boxes one in living room and one in bedroom where the cable modem and router is. Was going to set it up in there but that would limit hubby who works from home. In order to set it up in the living room i would have to figure a way around the issue of it being so far from the router

course could use a hub i guess.. or run the cable from one room to the next to the router

went to the Highline park today and started watching the Chile vs Spain match via Sling. After Spain's first goal I gave out little shout and a hottie, who was sitting near me, asked if I was watching the game. I said Yeah Spain just scored. She pumped her fist and asked if she could watch with me. Of course. Thanks Sling, player worked like a charm and im having dinner with a girl from Spain Monday night. :D

So after 2 mos. of researching Slingbox's and doing comparisons to Dish and DirecTV, I'm switching to Dish next week to get the VIP922 DVR receiver w/Slingbox built in. The DirecTV offer they gave me a couple weeks ago, is apparently the best they are willing to offer me (according to the rep I spoke to yesterday). I told them this would be the last opportunity to save me, but I guess I'm not a valued customer who only spends $130/mo. Can't wait to try the Slingplayer out on the DI.

are you switching to dish because of the receiver ??

I'm switching overall because I wanted to save some $$. The features of the VIP922 is an added bonus for me, plus the built in Slingbox. I've been researching this for about 2 months now. I'll be saving $$ while in the 2 yr contract with Dish. The HD channels is really a toss-up: you gain some and lose some with both providers. Dish also credits you back the app for the phone. Not a big deal but nice of them to do it.

It's not that I dislike DirecTV. I'm satisfied with the quality of my programming and HD. However, I will admit that I'm unimpressed with the speed of the channel guide. Ever since an update last summer, it killed the speed of channel surfing drastically. And since the beginning of this year, there's been a constant problem with lag in the receiver receiving input from the remote. I can input say channel 501 (HBO) and enter. It lags sometimes and will only capture say the 5 and try to change to that channel. And no, it's not the batteries. Also, the VIP922 channel guide/GUI blows away DTV's current guide with any receiver.

I've got the SlingBox Pro (not the HD), which is a discountinued model...

I have 3 inputs (arguably 4 are available)... The fourth one is just a straight coax with the expectation that it's an analog cable or OTA antenna input...

The mobile app is great...but I have to say that my ability to connect to it is spotty... I sometimes wait forever as it times out because it cannot connect...

Also, some of the buttons on the app don't work for me...as an example, the "listing" button won't bring up the now playing list on TiVo... I have to go into settings (which brings up the main menu), and then select the NPL from there...

I wonder how I can modify some if this so that it works well...

is anyone else having some issues with skipping/stuttering on 3g? mine works great on wifi, but whenever i'm on 3g i'll get random skips and stutters from time to time....almost like the app isn't buffering enough to keep up if it loses a data connection for a bit.

Mine works great on WiFi, but has issues making a connection on 3G...and once connected, especially if I am in a moving vehicle, I do get some skips...but I have to believe that part of this is due to varying connection quality...
