Sling Demo on EVO!!

Hell yeah. Looks like I need to upgrade my Dish box to the one that has Sling built in.

You can buy a Slingbox seperately and plug it into any ViP receiver or you can get the ViP 922 for $200.

Also, in June you get free HD.... forever.

I'm a Dish Retailer.

Wait, but I'm assuming you actually have to have a Slinbox connected to your cable box at home in order for this to work, right?

As mentioned a few posts up... if possible please verify the HDMI out to TV, this would be a huge game changer imo and put another huge dent in the Slingbox/iPhone users. iPhone 's Slingplayer has been throttled to hell and back by AT&T, the damn thing doesn't fill the entire screen AND it won't play via the Apple component out cables to a TV. This would be a killer feature when I travel overnight for work being able to watch my DVR items at a hotel, or watch a game/event when at the parents house even if it is only 3G coverage on sprint. Better than their horrible cable choices :)

I may just add that to the list of things to buy at Best Buy when I'm completing my phoen order...LOL. If I decide to do that, the rep is gonna have a good sales day!...hahahaha

-Edit- Nevermind. I may just order from Amazon instead...LOL.

Correct, you have to buy the Slingbox (hardware) and the Slingplayer (software/app) for a Android or other smartphone.

I've used the Solo which is usually around $150/$180 and now using the HD Pro which I found at Best Buy for $250, usually $299. Downside is both only hook up via component so you need audio cables as well, I guess the HDMI fee's are to much for Sling or something. Anyhow it still works very well and with their new web app you can watch TV pretty much anywhere you have a internet connection.

While Sling has their issues and is slow to release apps/software updates, their product as easy to setup, solid pictures quality and over 3 years and change I've never had an issue where a simply unplug/reset didn't fix it.

:) It's a great idea! See my problem is that I'm trying o rid myself of terrestrial cable/ dish services all together. :(

Will I have to buy a new Sling Box? I have the original version, that I have used and loved for about 5 years. I always used a P.C. to watch my directv while in Spain every July. Spainish tv is boring till about midnight when it turns into porn tv.
before you go buy a new one try the old one first... sling says my sling av isn't compatible with the new versions of sling player mobile for windows mobile... but once I got my hands on the cab file & tried it, it worked just fine.... IMO they say the older models aren't compatible just to push folks to get new hardware to keep capital coming in... since sling has no monthly bill, once you purchase the hw & mobile sw, they can't make anymore money off you... so they try to push you to upgrade your slingbox to keep revenue coming in...

how did you like the quality? what phone are you using?

I'm speechless right now.......

Here I am, working on cutting myself off from having any dependency on the cable tv cycle. When they decide to come out with something like this. I want it, I WANT IT!!!

Now all I need is to invest in a TV, Cable, DVR a SlingBox, and an EVO and I'm good to go.

Why couldn't have something like this have come out back when I was spending 2 weeks in the woods/desert with nothing 2 do....

I really appreciate your explaining how this works, exactly. I've been wanting to check out Slingbox for the LONGEST time and was thinking more about it when I knew I was gonna get the EVO. Just glad this thread came up.

I do have one question that the Slingmedia website didn't seem to explain (or, I couldn't really find the info). Let's say I hook this up to the TV/DVR. How exactly do I go about watching it? In other words, do I type in a URL from a web browser and sign in and all of a sudden, I'll see my DVR settings?

With the APP that's going to be available for the EVO, that's pretty easy to understand because you just boot up the APP, but let's say I wanted to watch from my Computer...How do I access it?

Another reason I ask is, let's say I wanted to allow my cousin in North Carolina to be able to view games that may not be broadcasting for him over there. Can he view this as well?

Is $200 the upgrade price? Would I have to sign a new contract? What are you talking about with the free HD forever thing?

For watching on your computer you would use slingplayer for windows/mac or you can go to sling.com and stream it through the website if you dont want to download the software. As for your cousin, Yes he can watch as well. He would need your password and the slingplayer software or just go to sling.com.

I aggree. Try it with what you have first.

I have a blackberry and Ipod touch and one of the original Slinboxes from like 5 years ago. Both the software apps gave me a warning message saying i dont have the right hardware but they both work perfectly with my old hardware.

So try it out first.

Awesome! Looks like I'll be getting a slingplayer at some point. Just a matter of deciding where I'm gonna buy. Right now, Amazon seems to be the least expensive (no tax for CA and free shipping).

Dish wanted $415 and a new 2 year contract to lease their Sling-enabled DVR. $645 to buy one. I'll buy the standalone Slingbox for less than $200.

The quality on the iPhone is limited by ATT currently. As for a laptop remotely the quality will depend on you UPload speed of your home Internet where the Slingbox is hooked up. It needs near 2mb up (2000Kbps) to sustain "HD"quality. I am on the 3GS now but my wifes 3G has the same quality as it limited by ATT well below the phones data capability, as is my home, crappy upload of only 512 Kb.

As mentioned above, Sling.com allows you to install a browser plugin and watch your home based Slingbox anywhere you have a browser and an Internet connection. With the iPhone and several other smart phones you do have to buy the mobile Slingplayer app to hook up mobile. The Android app looks to be not only the fastest responding but full screen Slingplayer app I've seen. Very cool! As for other people watching it, as long as you give them your login and password they can watch it. Few things though only one person can view the Slingboxes output via sling.com at a time. So if your trying to view it remotely and someone else tries to login it will tell them the Slingbox is in use. The good thing for the owner is you can setup a different password for you as the "Administrator" and kick them off the box.

The overall experience is awesome to basically have you home TV anywhere in the world you have Internet access. The setup is very easy and overall I think the EVO's screen and 4G network is going to make it amazing on the platform.

I tried to hook my Nokia e71 up with the free 30 day trial a few months ago, but I got a message on the phone screen that my slingbox was not compliant or something like that. So how do I make it work?
