Root Software update ZV8 to ZV9

At KTCfun..sometimes the tip of the micro usb connector is loose and hookup is intermittent . If a physical connection between hardware don't occur the phone will not be detected. If this were to happen during " Upgrade " it might brick phone. The LG Spectrum VZ9 baseband will not cause any corruption of data , LG says it will enhance performance and rid phone of some more bloatware .

Only if it's flashing things other than /system. Mine got knocked off my desk and came unplugged while cab flashing. Still alive thankfully. Baseband or some other important parts might make it a paperweight

Sounds like you have some funky/corrupt data going on. I would root and then use Titanium Backup to delete all wipe data for just that app. If that doesn't work, you may need to do a clean sweep of all system data and start fresh. There is a slim possibility of it being a permissions issue, but if you .cab flashed, that shouldn't be the case.
The part about the modem shouldn't have been an issue and was in the instructions as most people who had issues getting windows to see there phone, could fix the issue by disabling that item.

Hello Neph, thanks for answering!!
Well, I tried everything, I even cab flashed twice, and did a factory reset after each. No play store. THEN I took the ZV9 upgrade and factory reset. Still nothing. The error I get now is "NO CONNECTION". After cab flashing to ZV8 the error was "Server Error". I guess Play Store is gone forever.

There WAS some progress. After the ZV8 cab flash, the phone would fire off messages to me randomly, "unfortunately play store has stopped" or simply "play store has stopped". It wouldn't even let me sign in. Now at least I can sign in and go through the entire setup process without any random messages. One new thing though, when setup gets to the e-mail portion, even though I skip it, I get a "cannot connect to" or "cannot find server" message. Same complaint play store seems to be having.

I will now root again, and have to go looking for a Play Store analog. Any more suggestions? (other than taking my phone trap shooting) Can anyone say "PULL"!!! LOL I hear 1MOBILE.com has a lot of apps too.

Also, what does "this device is not SNC capable" mean? That's a new one on me. (I get it when signing on to the e-mail app to add my e-mail account. (I CAN sign on to my e-mail account, just get this strange message)

If this phone can be upgraded to Jelly Bean just fine.
Although we have a CM, but battery life is as good as the official ROM.
I should not complain.

This may be a long shot... but have you simply cleared cache/data for google play through app management? There's a possibility that it writes to the android secure folder on the sdcard, which would normally not be wiped during factory resets/cab flashes (you should remove/reformat your sdcard if you're turning the phone over to anyone else anyway). Perhaps that could be causing your issue.

I second what Yoinx says. If you're set on staying with stock, I would insert a clean sdcard and see what happens. Otherwise, you may just want to take the jump to a CM/AOSP based ROM. After everything you've done, there should be no reason why your phone doesn't want to behave.

I've had issues with corrupt /system partition on my Spectrum causing issues including missing or failing apps. I ended up using Neph's instructions for formatting (mke2fs) system, data, and cache, and then reboot into Download Mode (remove battery, hold volume up and volume down while plugging in usb to pc) and cab flash with the LG tools.

Thanks for replying, all of you!! I've tried just about everything. I even cancelled my gmail account and opened a new one. No luck. I think when I get home tonight I will try what Neph said again. Now, I should go into CWM and wipe everything, then pull battery and start up in download mode before flashing? Just want to get the steps right.

I mean, I've wiped everything a million times, and flashed roms more than that. I am not particularly fond of stock. Not at all. I wanted to begin playing around with stock roms and ultimately learn how to do my own rom by acquiring the tools, getting them set up, etc. But I can't do anything without having play store working. Well, I guess I could........LOL

How about a rom with ALL google removed? Anyway, I still get "no connection" on ZV9 when trying to get into play store. It is frustrating to say the least. Any other ideas, please let me know.

Personally... What I would do is this....

IF you have a second sdcard that you can experiment with, format it and put that into your phone with the correct gapps on it from Goo.im Downloads - Browsing gapps for whatever version of android you're running as well as whatever rom you want to flash.

Factory reset through recovery.

Format /data through your recovery's options.

Format /system through your recovery's options (the rom will do this anyway.... but just in case it's not doing it correctly).

Then install your rom, then install gapps.

Reboot and see what you're getting.

*if* that fixes it, you'll need to start looking at the data on your SDcard. Probably in the various android/android secure/etc folders because something's probably messed up there.

Wiped SD card and formatted it, just for fun. I went into recovery and did as instructed. I cab flashed it back to ZV8, rooted, installed gapps, and now I am back to the beginning, I get lots of messages stating that google this and google that has stopped.

I really did format system, data, etc. I mean, there was nothing else to wipe that I could see. Really at a loss on this one. Searching around the web I've seen lots of other posts about people having the same problem, but there always seems to me a solution. I've tried everything I've read, and nothing works.

Maybe pull a logcat and post it?

One message I get when wiping data/factory reset

"E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2"

Something failed to format. Could that be it, or does this message always appear when wiping? As far as a logcat, that will take me some time to make it happen. I really am not sure now, and I need to be off from my work to concentrate a little more, LOL....I get up around 2AM, so I am a bit wiped myself, to borrow a term.

I'm going to try flashing another rom and see what happens. At this point, what can I lose? One of the CM ones perhaps.......

That's a problem formating the sdcard. You probably don't have 2 partitions... nor do you *actually* need 2.

IIRC, you can have 2 sdcard partitions 1 for secure/system protected type data... and 1 for general use.

It's just letting you know that its' not able to format it.

I mean more like recovery log, but mostly the rom's logcat... to see what's erroring out.

Try installing an old version of Google Market apk , if it holds then it might be something in Google servers blocking the latest Google Play installation.

Wiping in recovery (at least TWRP, I think CWM as well) does not actually format the partitions, in only performs a recursive delete (rm -rf). If you want to *really* format (and validate) the partitions, jump over to Neph's TWRP post.

That's all specific to TWRP. TBH, I have no idea what method CWM uses. TWRP you can uncheck the box to make it do a format instead, which tbh... I've never tried :s

Actually, what he's linking to is to fix bad partitions. If there is corruption on the nand, a simple format may not be clearing the issues. If he's tried everything else, it's time to test the nand. He shouldn't need to run the mke2fs commands though, just the e2fsck.

Code:
ADB reboot recovery
adb shell
cd sbin

e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p26
[I][U]"repeat e2fsck until it comes back clean"[/U][/I]

e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p27

e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p28

mmcblk1p2 is for when you make a second partition on your sdcard in ext4 format to support app2sd. As Yoinx mentioned, you shouldn't need to ever do that as we have a decent size data partition to install to.

Well, tried to flash a CM version, phone froze up, tried to cab flash back, now it is bricked I think. Won't boot after cab flashing. I think it is dead.

I wish I knew just what happened through this process. What a mess. I guess I have to go visit Verizon now.

UPDATE: OK I ran the cab flash twice. Kept freezing. One time, I pressed the buttons to cause the hard reset, but that didn't work.

Got a magnifying glass and looked closely at the plugs on my usb cords. One of them has 5 contacts, and the other (the one I was using) had 4. So I tried cab flashing again with the other cord, and SUCCESS. I am back on ZV8.

Lesson learned. I've heard it before in this forum. Check the USB cords!!! Make sure you are using the right one. LOLOL

So now that you flashed with the correct cord, and hopefully having done the other fixes, does google playstore work for you now?

Hey all, first off want to give a big thank you to Neph and everyone else in these forums...you've been lifesavers. I think I understand what I need to do from these previous posts, but I wanted to ask to make sure. Here's my sitch:
I'm currently on stock w/ root...should I do a zv8 cab flash before taking the new OTA, or can I just do some standard app backups and take the update while still rooted? Thanks in advance for any advice, and best wishes for the coming holiday season.

If you are stock+root and did NOT unlock your bootloader, then you can just take the OTA update and all you'll lose is root.

If you are stock+root+unlocked bootloader, then you need to just use the LG tool to update via "upgrade recovery". It will automatically flash V9 for you. No need to wipe if you were on stock to begin with. Then just re-root using the ICS root.

So now that you flashed with the correct cord, and hopefully having done the other fixes, does google playstore work for you now?

Sorry to say, no. When I cab flash back to ZV8, I continually get messages saying "unfortunately, google play store has stopped". Isn't that nice of them to feel my pain? "Unfortunately" my ass.

Is there somewhere I can learn how to do a logcat? (please don't laugh too loudly). I am probably the last person here that doesn't know how to produce one.

The one thing I can state is that being on ZV8 I get messages about google play store and other google services "unfortunately" stopping, and play store will not work. However, on ZV9, play store still doesn't work, BUT I do not get any messages. Weird huh?

P.S. It WAS the right cord, believe it or not, it is the one that came with the phone. BUT, when I checked it, one of the contacts appears to have broken off, right before I was attempting to cab flash, of course.
