Root Software update ZV8 to ZV9

[Tutorial] How To Logcat - xda-developers

Thank you very much! I wasn't being lazy; I probably could have searched for something similar myself, I just figured you would point me to information meant for a superNOOB like me. I am going to practice creating a logcat a.s.a.p. I also need to learn more about ADB commands and the little argument modifiers, and their usage.

Update: Yesterday, I was ready to apply about 2oz of #8 1/2 shot out of a 12 gauge to my phone, but today, it is working, but play store still was not.
So, just for an experiment, I decided to flash a stock V6 rom, and then cab flash back to ZV8. Guess what? The flashing messages have stopped! I haven't tried to enter play store yet. I am just enjoying the lack of annoying messages needing me to click "OK" every few minutes.

I am not sure if I want to take the ZV9 update first, or try playing with play store first. Decisions, decisions.......

Has anyone switched to this from Icy Fusion 5? Curious if the performance or battery life is any better.

Icy Fusion is already pretty well debloated, so I'm more concerned about battery life.

Latest news: I clicked on play store, signed in with my google email name, and it let me in!!

BUT, (my phone is such a tease!!!), when I attempt to download something, I get this message Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0]
What does THAT mean? RPC is a scanner, or bar code, isn't it? Like what is on merchandise at the store? All of you have been such a big help to me, just knowing I have someone I can ask about this crazy s***.

I feel like life is better on v9 than v7 and v8. I'm pure stock. Icy had slightly better life for me. But then again. Today I got 5 hours. 100%-10% the other day I went 12 hours on a full charge(3800mah extended battery). Heavily Depends on screen on time. And data use

If your 100% stock and still can't get right. Call Verizon. I plan on calling in the am. My dad's spec half the time won't let him type a text. And mine half the time won't let me watch YouTube because of" car home enabled"

Android Fix: RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error while updating or installing apps Google Play Store - AppsLova.com

It's not a sure fix, but it works for many people. BTW, did you ever go through and do those e2fsk commands I suggested?

No, I haven't tried the e2fsk commands yet. I went back through this thread and can't see where you suggested it. But then again it could be me........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ (lack of sleep for old people)

I was still trying to resolve the issue in what I thought were easier ways. It seems though that any instructional posts around the web all somehow have to do with download or download manager.

I never dreamed this could be such a mess. I will get back later after I try to get things back in order. Time is always limited, isn't it? LOL

Well, I had cab flashed back to ZV8. After doing so, I can get into play store, and get as far as downloading an app, then I get the RPC message displayed above.
I followed all the steps outlined at AppsLova. NOW when I try to sign onto Play Store, I get "server error" and it FC's. So, I am going to cab flash again I guess, since it got me closer. But there has to be another way to work around the RPC message that halts the app downloads from play store. Anyone else have a suggestion I could try?

I am going to stay on ZV8 and not root my phone until this is resolved, since it seems to be less buggy than ZV9, and we've all been on ZV8 for a while and know it better. Unless there is a better course of action out there, somewhere...........

update: I tried flashing back to ZV7 to see what happens. I was able to sign on to play store, choose an app, and hit the download button, but then the error changed to error -101, whatever that is. I called google and they ran me through the normal clear this, clear that, etc. Last was a factory reset. Now I am back to "server error", and can't even get into play store. Just the way to spend a day off.....

I updated both my wife's Spec and mine with the ZV9 and have not noticed any differences at all. A few more apps are gone and after the update it made me update the Google Play Store for some reason, I had already side loaded the new Play Store from a apk taken from the Nexus 5 I think which was the same 4.4.21, maybe the Play Store update is the problem?
But for the most part the radio and functions are the same as ZV8, I get about 10-3 on 4G.

Linux command like chkdsk for windoze. You may want to 1) get exchange with Verizon, 2) send your phone to one of the Android gods here to play with and fix for you

What are the e2fsk commands? Is it something that could help me?

You must have CWM Recovery 6 installed.

ADB reboot recovery
adb shell
cd sbin

mke2fs -t ext4 -b 4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p26
e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p26
"repeat e2fsck until it comes back clean"

mke2fs -t ext4 -b 4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p27
e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p27
"repeat e2fsck until it comes back clean"

mke2fs -t ext4 -b 4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p28
e2fsck -fy /dev/block/mmcblk0p28
"repeat e2fsck until it comes back clean"

You will be back to a pristine condition and with no OS. Install a rom and have fun. If I ever get the mount as mass storage fixed, I will be pushing out another version of TWRP and will replace mke2fs and e2fsck from CWM into TWRP just to make sure that isn't part of the issue.

Per Neph's feedback, you could skip the mke2fs commands (similar to DOS/Windows "format") and just run the e2fsck (similar to chkdsk) commands to check/fix your /system, /data, and /cache partitions. You do have to have CWM installed and have a working copy of ADB on your machine. If you used the PWNAGE tool to unlock your bootloader and install CWM, you can just use the included adb.exe for the commands above.

I installed Jellybean 10.1.3 Cyanogen Rom , after the zv9 update and I gotta say that battery life its noticeably improved . When phone it's not in use just do not use any juice at all , which I noticed in zv8 stock first . Zv9 has inserted this quality in the Jellybean 10.1.3 stable rom .

OK then. I have my PC set up for this. I will give it a try. I flashed back to ZV8 yesterday. I am now receiving the following message (again) when I try to download an app from play store ERROR RETRIEVING INFORMATION FROM SERVER. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0]. As I get older, my patience level is becoming less and less accepting of errors. that's why I took the rest of the day off, and waited until today to start over. thank you all for trying to help me through this mess.

I am currently laughing my a** off. I've been communicating with GOOGLE about this problem. They suggested, of course, that I continue to pass along any information surrounding this error, AND that I read the "known issues" page of their help page.

Well, I read it, and there is a disclaimer of sorts that says "due to the high volume of notices about this issue" there currently isn't a workaround or a solution. The first notification they received about this error was OVER A YEAR AGO! Yeah, sure, they are just SO concerned about helping their customers!!! LOLOL.

Anyway, I just finished running the PWNAGE tool and making a backup, so I guess it is time to try the suggested actions described above by NATHANHAYWOOD. Wish me luck guys. You've all taught me so much in the last few months. Thank you again!

I tried e2fsck and it didn't do anything. I am now back to "server error". Still can't get in. It HAS to be something to do with google not responding to my phone for some reason. I've tried deleting my account, etc. Name it, I've tried it. If anyone else has any ideas, please pass them along. Thanks

I had "server error " before ,with the LG Trill 925 AT&T when I was flashing several roms using LGTool and smart flash . It never got fixed till I reflash it again back tp gingerbread from ICS rom . I believe that during flashing some partition that deals with authenticity for Google gets somehow corrupted. Maybe you should try flash to some Gingerbread Rom and then perhaps do a LG Recovery Upgrade ( will install latest vz9 software).

Anyone else on v9 having issues with car home randomly popping up be being annoying?
Verizon has sent out a replacement(should get it in the morning)

Get a replacement phone from Verizon. Keep calling and complaining. DO NOT MENTION ROOT OR UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER.
My reason was battery life. In the hour and a half phone call with Verizon. My battery dropped 25%

I just upgraded to ZV9, going to play with it a little longer. If I don't get anywhere, I believe I will take your advice. I've had expert help here, and I've been in touch with google for more than a week, and tried everything they suggested, and nothing seems to work.

I'll make sure I am back to stock ZV9, then call and complain. Sounds good to me. LOLOL

Well, I'm rooted on ZV9 and I am back to getting the ERROR RETRIEVING INFORMATION FROM SERVER. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0] message when I go into Play Store. Also I got a random "CAR HOME" message as well ( I saw someone had problems with that on ZV9 somewhere in this forum). SO, I think I am going to take BONES advice and complain LOUDLY to Verizon about my phone. Wish me luck.

LG Update tool.

I can't get this thing to work properly. I'm currently running icy fusion 5.

I've tried in regular mode and download mode. It detects the phone fine, then I select upgrade recovery from the menu.

Here is where at hangs at different points depending on what computer I'm using.

Sometimes it hangs at analyzing phone setting, sometimes at downloading software.

The counter stops also, usually between 24-37 seconds of elapsed time.

I let it sit for 45 minutes one time, with no progress.

What am I missing here?

Edit: Nevermind, I just cab flashed zv8

Wild guess, but make sure you open windows device manager and disable any android modem or network device to ensure you have a good internet connection while running.

If you have or can get CWM 6 installed, you may want to try the ADB e2fsck commands from the TWRP thread to make sure at least your data, cache, and system partitions are clean.

OK I cab flashed back to ZV8, and did a factory reset. I am going to take the upgrade to ZV9 (once I am done charging this things, never really had good battery life).

Is there anything else I should do to ensure that VZW doesn't notice that I've been making "software alterations"? They read me the disclaimer about what it would cost me if they discover any type of damage or alterations. Any advice would be welcome.

Also, just a side note. While on the phone with VZW, they could NOT see my phone at all. The representative needed to do so in order to process the transaction, and couldn't see it in their system. She was asking me if I had a spare phone around, so I could try another SIM card. I didn't have one, unfortunately. Any comments ladies and gentlemen? (I hope they don't read this forum, LOL)

Yes I had it happen to me yesterday. (My phone just doesn't want to be left out of all the fun I guess)

Try this. Before attaching the phone, open up the LG Update tool, and choose the "update recovery" option. then enter all the phone information, and click OK. Then attach your phone and try to run it. I've had more luck that way.
