Help Somebody Please Explain These Extremely Bizarre Battery Stats

I was mainly just going online, and into some news applications. I was using Wi-Fi (it was on and I should have been connected), and the screen was set to “auto.”

By the way...

I have just downloaded Fast Reboot Pro – it has all great reviews.

Anyway, I ran it and it said that it turned off like 14 MBs of stuff. Then, it said 17 MBs. Like, not even a minute later, it said 72 MBs.

Is this normal? What should it say? Should I set-up auto reboots? If so, how many each day?

What should my readings tell me every time Fast Reboot Pro is run?

I honestly recommend that people stay away from ALL of those types of apps that android can do on its own, like juice defender, all task killers, fast reboot pro etc.... Most of them have little, to no effect on battery life or phone performance and have been known to have adverse effects. Even if you believe they were helping before, an update to the app itself or ANY other app on your phone can cause them to start acting weird.

And IMO you are nitpicking your battery too much. Just let your phone run for a few weeks. Don't try and tweak it or monitor. Just let it do it's thing. You can't really compare your battery life in a specific scenario to someone else's, unless you were in a lab setting and all things being equal. But in the real world, all batteries are not created equal. If you bought two equally rated batteries, from the same manufacturer, from the same store, on the same day, they will not last the the same amount of time.

There are also factors out of your control (besides the ever degrading battery) that could be causing worse battery than before. Mainly signal strength; even a few DBs less can cause significantly more battery drain. There could also be increased network load on the tower your phone connects to, which in turn causes more processing time.

Basically, your battery stats are really not pointing out anything completely abnormal. So just ENJOY the phone and don't fuss over the battery.(plus constantly checking the amount of battery that you have left isn't helping).

IF your battery life isnt up to what you need, invest in a couple extra chargers or extra batteries. **IT IS A LOT easier then constantly having to worry about when your phone is going to die.**

You are correct, but I was spoiled before with a great battery life.

The kworker stuff is normal? Display a screenshot of yours, please.

.....

What you need to do is ignore "processes" in better battery stats. kworkers are going to appear all over processes. They aren't what we are concerned with. Only worry about "partial wake locks" for now. To put it simply, Partial wakelocks are events that trigger the processor without the screen being on. Basically, background processes. Many of them are harmless or necessary... even music playing while the screen is off. What you are looking for is something out of the ordinary causing usage.

I understand your frustration, but you really only have a few choices:

Just give your phone a couple weeks without the "battery saving" apps and see where you stand
or
head to Verizon ASAP and demand a replacement and hope for the best
Or
Just settle with where you are at now and grab an extra battery and charger.

So, give it two weeks without JuiceDefender and the Fast Reboot Pro? I know it isn't Fast Reboot Pro because I just got it.

Do you think it will improve over time?

I have read this entire thread and I have had a GNEX since day 1. Tese phones are battery hogs. Lets just get that straight. If you cannot charge it at least once a day under normal use you need an extra battery. If you use the internet according to what you have it doing it will eat the battery. The largest battery eater is when it is hunting a phone or data signal in a low signal area. If you run your GPS and the phone is inside it is looking for the FGPS signal which is not there. Another battey eater. Bottom line is this phone will do so much the battery technology has not caught up with this or some of the other smart phones. i have this one and the Rezound. Both are power users and I use the heck out of them so I just have the charger or 1 or 2 more batteries. I had 2 BB Bold's and they were both battery eaters but not as bad as these because their processors were not half the power of these phones. When you go for speed and performance you are going to use more gas/battery. That is just the way it is. You will find that the battery will get better after it settles in after a few weeks but do not expect it to last for 2-3 days even on standby. Not going to happen unless you do not have anything running. And I agree with another poster. Anything the phone will do do not download an app that does the same thing. The less you have on the phone the more battery you have. I have mine loaded up with apps and could care less about battery use. I am prepared for it to be used up quickly so I have plenty of batteries or if I get a chance charged it. Until some company comes up with new battery technology battery problems are only going to get worse forthe smart phones not better. The more power and speed the more battery/power required and todays batteries are just not up to the task. Look at all the different threads for different phones. Everyone has battery use complaints except for the dumb phones. We all got spoiled with them on the battery and now that we have a laptop in our pocket we can not figure out why the battery will not last.Simple electronics. More apps require more power equal faster battery drain.

Don't use fast reboot either.... Like I said, those types of apps can do more harm than good. You really just have to let android do its own thing.

It's also hard to get a judge of what is using the most battery when you have apps that are trying to counteract it also. You just end up with false and misleading stats. But like others in this thread have said, your battery life isn't abnormal. it may be different than when you first got the phone, but it's still not abnormal. You will really save yourself a whole lot of frustration if you get another battery or two and give yourself access to phone chargers throughout the day.

But if you really want to get the most of your battery, you will have to root the phone and tinker with the kernel.

Thanks to everyone. So, I just woke up and in 10 minutes, my batttery went from 100% to 91%. All I used was Facebook. Could that be it? In BetterBatteryStats, its blue line was all the way across. That's a huge battery loss in barely any time. BBB didn't show any "kworker" stuff.

I then went into Yahoo! Mail to get my e-mail and it went down to 87% in only 17 minutes. At that rate, itll be dead in under 2 hours.

I should just keep using it?

Facebook is a massive drain. Not sure about -9% in 10-20 minutes but its bad. If you must use facebook, use it in your browser and make a bookmark, you'll save a ton. Also, you might not get a good battery reading for the first -10% or so regardless. How bright is your screen setting?

I am on auto brightness. Will I still get Facebook notifications?

What is AlarmManager in my BBB? I don't use an alarm. I also ditched the Dolphin browser.

I guess you would get email notifications of whatever you have set up on your facebook account (comments, likes etc.). But browser surfing facebook will not notify you of anything. Its great actually (=

I found auto brightness to be a bit awkward. I leave mine at about 23% all the time. If I have to adjust it (a few times in a week maybe) it only takes a second with a widget.

I guess I could set up e-mail Facebook applications, right?

Also, what percentage is auto-brightness? It’s pretty low, isn’t it? Even if it is 25%, would making my brightness 15% really save all that much battery?

OK, someone please tell me if this is normal. The battery dropped like a rock, in my house while on Wi-Fi and using auto-brightness.

Is it possible that my phone is not accessing the Wi-Fi, even though Wi-Fi is connected and the phone seems to display that I am using my Wi-Fi? How can I see if this is a fact?

I turned on my phone this morning (after it was fully charged last night before I went to bed), and within only a couple of minutes of using it, it dropped to 96%. Then, in 14 minutes, it was already down to 90%. Seriously? Is that normal? All I did was open the stock browser (I ditched the Dolphin Browser yesterday), and I opened Facebook. Those two things shouldn’t drain my phone.

Then, I viewed a video in the stock browser for maybe 5 minutes, and I continued to surf the internet. After only 44 minutes and the battery dropped to 82% - how can that be? Isn’t that crazy? Here’s what it looked like:

But then, I didn’t touch the phone for 2 hours. In that time, it only dropped about 4% to 78%. So, when the phone is idle, I am fine, but when the screen is on (auto-brightness, and on Wi-Fi in my house), it drops like a rock.

You had your screen on for 44 minutes and you're wondering why it lost battery life? 18% is not bad at all. Say it's -25% in an hour, you just got 4 hours of screen time out of your battery. I'm no expert but that sounds good to me.

Oh, it is? I'm pretty sure it was way better than that before. Am I wrong? Can someone else please use their phone for 45 minutes straight and post a screenshot?

I always use my phone that much each morning - I don't remember it dropping like 18% in that time. Maybe 10%, but not double that.

What results does everyone else get?

Auto brightness just sets the screen percentage automatically. If you were in a bright room it would be set high, if you were in a dark room it would be lower.

Oh, I get it. So, should I not be using auto-brightness and just toggle with my widget?

(By the way, in the morning, when using my phone, I was in a dark room, so it shouldn't have been on so bright, right?)

It's rather obvious from your screen shots that your screen is eating up your battery, right?

The screen is one of the biggest battery hogs...especially when at full brightness. Just learn to adjust the brightness manually...and turn it up only as much as is needed.

Also, remember that the longer you have the screen on, the more battery it uses...which can be substantial.

If you really like the brightest screen, that's fine. Leave it on auto-bright, but don't complain about battery usage being poor.

The price for high performance settings is less battery life. Conservative settings=longer battery life.

I've always run auto-brightness, however, it never got eaten up this much.

Can someone please run their phone with auto-brightness in a normal setting for 45 minutes and see if they lose over 15%, please?

Everything you just posted is perfectly normal. The first 10% will drop in what seems like a rapid pace.
Take the time to read this explanation of why... Your Smartphone’s Battery Gauge is Lying to You (and it’s not such a bad thing)

As for dropping almost 20% from 44 minutes of screen time....yep, especially considering the first 10% doesn't go at the same rate as the.next 90%. I typically see anywhere from 15%-30% of.my battery for and hour of screen time. I know this because I often have almost exactly an hourday. screen time at the end of my day.

As for auto brightness, I don't really use it much indoors as I find it is too bright. I have my widget set to 10% - 30% - 70% - auto. I use 10% indoors almost exclusively. When I am outside on a bright day I set it to auto.

Thanks, Tim and thanks to everyone! We seem to have similar usage. I read what you wrote before about your typical day. We almost have the same day.

So, the drop in my battery seems normal? I'm just perplexed, because it never was this bad before. Will Android 4.0.4 be better? When can I get it with everyone else? This is crazy!

I am indoors most of the day. So, I should be on 10% brightness inside and like 30% when I am outside and/or in my car during commutes?

(I can set up these profiles in "Setting Profiles.")

And, I have to say, JuiceDefender Ultimate really is saving my battery life. I turned it off yesterday for a period and my battery really suffered, until I turned it back on.

I am back to being around x1.90 - which is good. I had been getting results closer to x1.55 before I factory reset my phone.

Later, I will put Dolphin back on and see if it messes me up worse than this morning.

OK, I put the SIM in. It activated for like 2 minutes. It never said that it was successful, nor did a voice say it was. It just dialed that number and there was music for two minutes. My PRL has a version of 52686, just like earlier.

I just factory reset my phone yesterday, and I reinstalled most of the applications that I had before. Check out these weird battery stats...

The battery life goes up without charging? The phone shuts itself off, is turned back on, and suddenly has over 12% less battery life???

Look at how long your screen was on during the times it dropped fast. That would cause it.
