So I am rooted with s-on and also have twrp and would like to flash the miui ROM but would that brick me? I'm new to this s-on off stuff and would love clarification. I would pursue s off but the only tutorials I've seen require ubuntu. Basically how do I go about custom roms and such with s-on ?

Thanks for the help guys, this is confusing. so with flash image GUI, I can flash the kernel and still flash the ROM twrp?

Twrp is your recovery that is where you will flash your ROMS from. I suggest you read the tutorials above a few times and ask questions before taking on things. It is important to have a clear understanding this way you won't brick your device.

I know what TWRP does lol I'm asking if I am to flash kernel first via GUI then reboot to TWRP and flash the ROM.

But now here's where I am.
Still S-ON
I've tried Paranoid Android and MIUI doing
Flash Kernal via GUI
Reboot to TWRP
Factory Reset
Install rom
Install gapps
wipe dalvik/cache
reboot system

Each time I rebooted into either roms after multiple flashes I still get this
"Unfortunately AOSP keyboard has stopped"
So I have the rom but no keyboard
I've read all the guides but I can't find out why this is happening. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom to share? I'm currently on paranoid android without a keyboard trying to figure out how to reverse this. Oh and I don't have a nandroid. Stupid, I know, let's not dwell on that part. Suggestions?

I've never used the flashable GUI to install kernels. But I know the link dustwun77 posted works.

Wipe EVERYTHING except internal/external storage
Flash new ROM (and gapps if necessary)
Wipe cache and dalvik cache
Flash kernel in bootloader (as instructed in the link)
Reboot and bask in the warm glow of your new ROM.

I always recommend getting s-off. It seems like a pain in the butt to do it, but it's worth it so you don't have to fastboot flash the kernel. If you're interested in s-off you can check this out:

You'll probably be looking at the DirtyRacun section.
