Root Sprint update LS855ZVC kills root. Solutions?

So if this update removes CWM, we would have to revert to a previous rom first in order to try custom?

I wonder which is better performance wise- this update, or customs like Playfulgod's.

To a previous SW build, yes. That, or find a new exploit to allow pushing the root tools and CWM to the phone..

I really haven't found anything too different with this new version yet. It feels the same as the day I un-packaged, aside from more bloatware (Google Books, Google Music, etc is all installed, along with the usual Sprint stuff), and my dock icons are now white instead of green.

I preferred my de-bloated/de-odexed ROM, though. Hoping somebody can figure out a new exploit.

It will be awesome if someone who's experienced can take that zip file and dissect it and remove the security updates that are blocking out the rooting exploit; we will then have a update that we can use and still be able to root. All I really want from this update is the call lockup fix because I have been getting quite a few during calls; the phone just locks up momentarily then reboots

Interesting.
does the deodexed/modded rom have the lockup and reboot problem as well? Just started playing with it, haven't had it happen yet.

Interestingly enough, the custom rom has been asking me to update as well. I wonder if I can prevent that from happening.

Looks like the boost version is coming any minute.

thanks for the reply, my phone sw version is LG855ZV3. phone looses sound when you disconnect from bluetooth device and you have to reboot the phone to get sound back to normal. if i don't use voice dialing with bluetooth, somehow i don't loose sound after disconnect the bluetooth. it does samething on both bluetooth devices.

if you reconnect the bluetooth with phone while you have no sound, I still can hear and talk trough the bluetooth device but, when you disconnect the bluetooth, No sound... and have to reset the phone.

I tried to use speaker mode while has no sound and other mode but failed.. no sound. the light is come on under the button but no luck.

Version ZV4 should be available, if not today, any day now. Watch for the update.

Here is what happened to me...

To start, I have procrastinated w/ installing CWM but my phone is rooted.

I woke up this a.m. to see the update notification but it gave me a choice to install later. So, I immediately installed CWM & performed a backup. Then I installed OTA Rootkeeper & followed the directions from this thread HERE.

Rebooted my phone & to again see the update notification but I chose to install now. The phone rebooted, but in CWM screen. I rebooted, checked my software version (which still says LS855ZV9). Went to the System Update window, choose "Update LG Software" & it says I am up to date. Which I am not complaining because obviously my phone is still rooted & working correctly. The zip file LS855ZV9_VC_Inc.zip is still in the cache folder & I am no longer getting the notification that there is an update.

I also have OTA Rootkeeper installed, CWM and playfulgod rom installed. I take it you don't have playfulgod rom installed on yours? Maybe this will help others figure out why our update failed??

That is correct, I did not have playfulgod rom installed. Running stock (Sprint)

I don't know if it makes much of a difference but I rooted back in October using the One Click Root method found HERE

Also, I was experiencing a phone reset in call (sometimes a couple times a day) but I could never recreate the problem when using a bluetooth only when holding the phone. Which made me think it has something to do w/ the proximity sensor.

So, I shut off my proximity sensor on 3/3/2012 (settings/call settings/uncheck proximity sensor) & ever since have not had a reset.

Well I went to the LG site and took down the drivers along with the support tool. It took under 15 minutes to update the phone. SW version now reads LS855ZVC. All the apps that I installed are still there. OTA Rootkeeper = snake oil for the LS855ZVC update.

I've gotten word from a admin/mod from the official LG support forums that an update for the Boost version of the phone will roll out anyday now.

Boost Mobile LG855 (LG Marquee) will not activate... - Official LG Phone Forum

It was a reply to my thread I also posted there to see if the LG folks had any answers to my connection problems. The LG moderator posted that there is a OTA update that will likely be in the update tool as well and will come out soon.

For those who don't have backups made, you better make them soon in case the boost update also kills root. That's assuming the update doesn't wipe out CWM....

Heck if I'm lucky the update will fix my connection problems since I will have to use the update tool to update the phone. I'd rather have a phone with no root then a phone with no data connection... :P

All of my apps were still there, too, including Superuser. Was your CWM also there, or was it overwrote also?

Thanks for the tip. If you disable the sensor what happens when you hold it to your face? Does the screen turn off and there's a chance your face can accidentally press any of the on-screen soft buttons, causing issues

im looking at the sprint update right now.

It will overwrite: radio, recovery,
adds bloat,
adds new/modified phone driver (bug fix)
patches most of the system

you might be able to maintain cwm recovery by editing the updater-script so it doesnt install the new recovery, or replace it with the one we have already. you wouldnt have root tho

CWM = gone
This update that I took via software from LG was a full size rom 184MB. I can give you a link to the direct cab if anyone wants it. file name LS855ZVC_17.SC_17.P21083.cab

Yes, you could accidentaly hang up. So what I have been doing is shutting off my screen just after answering the call. You also need to turn it back on to end the call. But for me its still better than a complete phone reset.

It may help some of the advanced users to analyze and find an exploit to allow root and cwm on the new version. I imagine the newer Marquees will be shipping with ZVC installed already, so it would probably be a good thing to be prepared. Sprint lowered the Marquee to free with a 2 year subscription.
Nosajam, Superuser is still on my phone as well, as are the root-only apps like AdFree. They just don't work and using a rootchecker app confirms that root is gone.
Correct :) I updated Superuser from the Market after my root pre-install, so it was considered a user app at that point. All user apps were intact. The problem is that it overwrites the su binary in /system/bin, as well as the superuser.apk left over in /system/app from the original root.

I wonder if we can dissect the update file and remove the busybox and su binaries so that when update the existing rooted versions stay in tact. As imonster pointed out we can update the script to not update the recovery boot so cwm stays in tact

I could make a boost rom out of the update but without root for sure I wouldn't want to update anyway

When you get the notification the update gas already been downloaded to /cache. Use Rees file explorer to move it to your sdcard. Then unzip it and look in the Meta-inf folder keep going till you find updater script. It's pretty simple to figure out but remove the part about the recovery image. Also remove the lines with something like get asset patch check that have an md5 check sum.

you can add the su binaries to the script and correct folders tho keep root. You gotta flag it on a basically stock ROM with root

Reading through this and other threads:

1) it does not appear that anyone has confirmed that OTA Rootkeeper works to allow update AND keep root;

2) I have not seen a post (though one might exist) on how to stop the update from installing/continually reminding you to update.

Until someone roots this new update, the best solution appears to be to NOT install it.

Anyone know how to prevent installation AND turn off the notifications?

Thanks.
