Although I thought JMKosmo described the feelings of the typical eager consumer towards a situation like this perfectly I do completely agree with you Dmac. It is certainly a business and you're also right that sometimes the employees truly don't know.
For example, Jan. 5th it was announced that the N1 would be coming to Verizon in Spring. I called VZW support no more than 3 hours after the announcement to discuss possible timelines, my upgrade options, ect. When I spoke to the woman on the phone she had never even heard of the phone or that it was going to be on Verizon's network. I had to direct her to
Nexus One Phone - Web meets phone. to show her what I was talking about. Remember, this was me dialing *611 from my cell, so it was nationwide support, not my local store and they still had no idea. After discussing she said she was going to spread the word to her coworkers so they would be better informed.
Mobile phones are one of the most competitive fields out there right now. I can completely understand that the companies cannot disclose information on a particular device prior to a few days earlier than the release date because a different carrier may beat them to the punch with a similar device. It's in the interest of keeping their business booming and frankly without VZW customers there is no money for VZW to buy towers and frequency space to support everyone. It's a circle here, if everyone left for AT&T today they could afford to be as good a network as VZW, but then they wouldn't be leaking info fast enough for us and we'd just continue on to the next carrier...it'll never change.
