Root Success!!! Bloatware Removed!!!

When I download an app from the metro store it downloads a zip file. It says no applications can perform this action.

I'd say it's a mispackaged file by metro. Let them know what file it is, and they'll fix it (hopefully). I can tell you for sure, some of the downloads are good since I myself installed something from the metro app store a while back.

I didn't think I could do it but with Mikes help I was successful, thanks again Mike. Now I didn't do the "Grant All Access" option at the end because I'm unsure of wut it does. Can someone please explain wut it does and why I should do it? As u can tell I'm new 2all this and I want the best out of this $400 phone I got lol!! And again, thanks to Mike and everyone else for all ur replies and all the hard wrk u put into this.

Its to grant superuser access to all applications that ask for it.(its what gives yu root access to the fone)
Its not a full root but its good anywho.
Go ahead and grant the access. It will let u use setcpu and titanium back up and also let u flash custom recovery and other whatnots.

Also after granting su access install lookout mobile security.
Since this superuser thats pushed to the fone with mikes script
Grants all access its a chance volnurable to viruses so lookout will
Keep u safe.

But no worries... go ahead and grant the access.

if this works to grant all access would that work with the wireless tether that needs root access to work, from the market?

Unfortunately, no.
For some unknown reason (conspiracies say that Metro has some cr*pware blocking them), some applications requiring root cannot be installed on the phone presently.
These would include for example busybox and the Google Wireless Tether App.
No known workaround have been found for these yet, so we can't install them.

You can always try EasyTether or Barnacle Wifi, but be warned that Barnacle is very YMMV, so far it seems to like Macs more than x86/win PCs...

MikesToolz: I have two questions. The directions sas "Unplug your Galaxy Indulge and remove the battery" does that mean take the battery out while the unit is running or to shut it down gracefully first?

Secondly at the end of BloatWareRemoval.vbs I see the following

C:\bloat>adb shell
# chmod 6775 /system/bin/su
chmod 6775 /system/bin/su
# chmod 6775 /system/xbin/su
chmod 6775 /system/xbin/su
# chmod 6775 /system/bin/busybox
chmod 6775 /system/bin/busybox
# chmod 6775 /system/xbin/busybox
chmod 6775 /system/xbin/busybox
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: No such file or directory
# exit
exit
Is that a problem?

I couldn't the get "Soup or Root 1.8rA" to work multiple times because I didn't follow the directions. For those having trouble -
YOU CANNOT USE YOUR COMPUTER AT ALL, DONT EVEN MOVE THE MOUSE, UNTIL ITS FINISHED AND YOU SEE THE FOLLOWING
C:\souproot\android-sdk-windows\tools>echo Your Droid should now be rooted!! Pl
ease restart your Droid and close cmd.
Your Droid should now be rooted!! Please restart your Droid and close cmd.

C:\souproot\android-sdk-windows\tools>pause>nul
It took nearly five whole minutes to get to this point

just take the battery out, no need to shutdown.

also what you are seeing at the end is what it should say.

Barnacle works fine for me..

@slee
Good glad ur enjoying!! If u want to hep us out with a full secure root add to the bounty thread!

i was just successfull in removing the apps that metro and samsung pre load onto the phone that you are not able to uninstall, like metro easy wifi, myextras....

I have finally been able to rid the phone of the default apps loaded on the phone that samsung and metropcs don't want you to be able to remove. These apps just take up space, most people don't use or want them. Some of them take up your system resources and drain the battery faster.

Full instructions to be posted shortly.

warning, i take no responsibility for anything happens to your phone or computer by using this. Use at your own risk.

Before doing anything make sure you have the proper usb drivers installed on the computer for the phone and that you have enabled usb debugging mode in settings > applications > development.
Download the files needed from here
this will only work for windows (sorry mac users.)
after unzipping the files on your computer the first thing you will need to do is run the soup or root 1.8ra.exe program.

Once you run the soup or root 1.8ra.exe do not click or type anything until it is completely finished running. You will know when its done when it tells you to close the command window and reboot the phone. dont reboot the phone just close the window and continue to the next step.

Now that your done with that process your phone should now have a level 1 root. With your phone still connected to the computer, run the bloatwareremoval.vbs and again do not click or type anything until the script is finished running and it tells you to unplug your galaxy indulge and remove the battery.

After removing the battery and then replacing the battery back into the phone, you should no longer have any of the metropcs bloatware apps that take up space and can slow down the phone.

Note: The metropcs appstore app was left in place so that if you ever decide in the future that you want to add a metro app back onto the phone you can do so. (how metro should have had it in the first place)

script updated to swap out SU after bloatware removal with one that gives all apps root access.

Ok so now I have to download the root file explorer now to have control over all apps? Ima noob. Need some advise please mike. Jen

Root file explorer is usually for if you need to modify system files (most likely you don't). But after rooting, you can use different apps that require root level access to the phone to work properly. (usually apps that interact with hardware directly, or have"admin level" settings). Examples include but are not limited to Setcpu, titanium backup, super manager, sd card speed booster, lookout mobile security...

Please also note that technically rooting your android may void your warranty.

@MikesTooLz

Sorry for the late thanks Mike... I just got around to removing the bloatware on my indulge. Have to admit I was alil' afraid at 1st then there was an app that kept asking me for set up... I finally had enough and did it.

I downloaded the drivers but it wouldn't work @1st... I had to install the stand alone Epic drivers on top of drivers from the link provided, then it worked like a charm.

I do have a question... @ the end I chose to not root the phone (waiting for functional Superuser). On with the question.

Have I still voided the warranty and is the phone still rooted even though I chose no?

So i downloaded the files from the first page for removing bloatware and my security software alerted me that it was unsafe to download and that it contained malware that may copy itself, slow my computer down, install keyloggers, and bunch of other bad stuff.

whats up with that?

rageagainstthecage is a linux exploit, unless you are running linux and plan on running it in your kernel and have a very specific version i dont think youve got much to worry about...

Ok scratch the previous post about the virus stuff. you answered that already.

Heres what I need to know most urgently. Is this root process a temp root or a permanent root. I work for a corporate metropcs retailer and temp rooting would be extremely convenient because if I get caught rooting my company phone, i risk termination.

If its a perm root, is there anyway to reverse it?

If its a temp root, do i have to run the software i downloaded from you everytime i want to root the phone?

Really wish visonary worked on this thing. That would have been extremely convenient
