If you really want to get tethering and root the phone, and you are brave enough to trust the scripts I would suggest using the root script first

Download http://k0nane.info/rom/acs-indulge-root.zip
Turn off your antivirus
Extract the file to a temporary folder
Put the phone in USB Debugging mode under Settings > Applications > Development)
Connect the phone to your pc
Double-click run.bat

Once that finishes successfully then install Google Goggles from the market (really cool app) and fire it up. Let it see this picture
pre14 -

And it will install the tethering app.

Reboot the phone then go into the app and change the device profile to the Indulge

Now when you click the main screen it will be a wifi hotspot

After I double-click run.bat this is what I get:

Phone is not connected.
Press any key to continue...

But my phone was connected. Any advise?

did you have the current drivers?

No. But I am novice and was just following step-by-step "ciper's" posting up there. It does not talk about the drivers. If I need to have the current drivers before I proceed then please let me know what is the name of the drivers and where can I find that. Thank you very much.

P.S. I can connect the phone as a mass storage and it shows as an external driver.

I have an indulge... my phone gets hot on 4G... so tethering gets real hot... notice how the tethering apps come with a temperature monitor?

You know...I never even noticed that.... but I didn't want my phone to " fry the antennae" so I quit using it, but it was working brilliantly.

what is the longest anyone has tethered their Indulge for ?? I only used it for about 20 mins tops!!

I have wi-fi tethered for about 20-25 minutes
I even got my macbook pro and my wife's iMac AND my motorola Xoom (wi-fi model) on @ the same time. Just to see how many I can connect.
It does get hot, somewhat but it is plugged into the charger so it is not running off the battery (pulling the battery to zero).
I use the wi-fi_14.apk.
Select Samsung Indulge and change set-up method to Softap for Samsung (master)
to get my Xoom to connect
Tried it since wi-fi_12.apk but wi-fi_14.apk was when my Xoom could see it.

Do not trust ANY temperature readout on the phone. The scale was improperly set from the factory. Whatever temp you see add 30 degrees celsius to get the real temp.

If you plan on tethering for any amount of time remove the back cover, open the keyboard, connect the charger and lay the screen on its face. It will shutdown when it overheats if you don't

For those asking for "idiot proof" instructions, ciper's are pretty good, except I would add:

1. Turn off your antivirus before downloading the one click root package. Some AV softwares will actually block the download and/or delete one of the needed files, as it contains a Linux exploit.

2. As I believe someone else pointed out, you will also need to download/installl some drivers for the actual phone before you begin the above instructions.

My galaxy indulge phone is rooted. I have the wifi tether app. I turn on tethering. My laptop picks up a wireless signal called 'android tether'. I connect to the android tether signal. I am prompted for a password. I enter the password typed in my passphrase located in the settings of my wifi tether app. My laptop tells me it is connecting to android tether and acquiring network address. Then it stops. No connection. Nothing happens. What could I be doing wrong??

I set my device name to samsung galaxy indulge. Enable access control is off. Setup method is set for auto. I can't figure this out. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Has anyone else had a problem like mine -

After a reboot I can start the tethering and stop it when finished. If I try to start it again, either immediately or after some time, it will get stuck and never start. I have to reboot to get it working.

In other words I can only use the tethering one time then I have to reboot to get it to work again

Thanks Ciper and the others who helped out with idiot proofing instructions for those of us who don't speak the lingo. Anyway, I held off on the root because I didn't see any instructions on how to undo the rooting so that the phone would appear unmolested in the event that I had a hardware warranty issue. However, I'm definitely going to do it one day soon. Here is my plan tell me if you see any issues or a better way. I want to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab, but Metropcs doesn't offer one. So I'm going to get a wifi only version of the tab and connect it to my rooted Indulge. Based on everything I've read in this thread this seems possible but before I make the jump to rooting my phone it would be nice to know that I could unroot it so that I could take it in for warranty if needed. What do you guys think? Comments please lol. Realize I wouldn't mess with all of this stuff since I'm so green if MetroPcs offered it in there phone or a version of the tab. Thanks for your help, you guys are great.

There is a thread that tells you how to flash back to stock right here http://androidforums.com/indulge-all-things-root/335191-acs-how-flash-using-odin-return-stock.html

They also included a 1 clock unroot in the rooting post.

According to MikesToolz from way back when, this didn't work for us, as the phone never provides an IP to the connected devices, along with a few other misses here and there. It appears it was "crippled in various places" on our phones. Maybe someone else can try it out again, and see if it works?

Hey guys not sure about this but while charging my indulge I remember that I need it a battery app like I used go have while I was using the motorola i1. So I Dowloaded "battery doctor " while checking it I notice that they upgraded the app. So I went into setting and it has the usual wifi, kill app but upon checking it up close ,it say "wifi hotspot" so I turn it on to see if anything appear on my iPad (first gen) and what do you know the "androidap" was on. I didn't tested it since my home network is fast. Also my phone is not rooted . Also should I make a separate threat about e app or keep it here?

Need help please....

Followed the steps and my computer is not seeing SSID "AndroidTether"

Phone is rooted and I have pre14
Device Profile set to Indulge
Setup Method set to auto

Is your wireless network list configured to view adhoc network - in network and sharing center click connect to network and "show all" dropdown box (vista)
