Hey all, I decided to attempt to mess with Ubuntu. Really, I just want to be familiar with it in hope of learning to make a ROM or Kernel. Yet I've snagged a issue or two. I did the option to dual boot Ubuntu with XP. I can boot up Ubuntu but the resolution inhabits me from booting XP.. I've tried to change the settings but they are not listed.. I need the 1280x1224 60mhz.. but there is no option to do so. Understand that I have no clue as to what I should try. I am eager to learn and want to create something that will show myself that I can do it..

So if there are any great tips, that I should know or things to be aware of. I would really appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks all, hope y'all like the themes. 2.0s are coming! :)

what kind of rom are you wanting to work on?

linux is really only required if your going to build a rom/kernel from source or edit a ramdisk. pretty much everything i did with CTMod was done on windows 7.

Thanks, to be honest I really don't know what I was going to try. Lol I totally didn't know CT was built from Windows 7.

I use Ubuntu on my home desktop. It takes awhile to learn Linux and you have to be prepared to read guides and commands. It's not as smooth as a transition from Windows to Linux as people think. Yes they've made improvements over the years to make it a little easier but it's still a bit complicated.

My best advice is to read up a bit on Linux commands. Learn about the different desktop environments available. Understand how to use the Software Manager. Learn what RPM, DEB, and Make files are, things like that. A lot of stuff in Linux requires you to edit configuration files so take that as a warning ;)

Your best resource for learning is to ask questions on the Ubuntu forums.

Thanks for the advice. I understand the concept of reading and research. In fact I love doing research its just kind of hard on a 3 1/2 inch screen. :-p

may I ask why you dont dual boot?

may I ask why you dont dual boot?

I did do the dual boot, but I could only boot up Ubuntu. When I would try to boot WinXP it gave me the "signal out of range" the resolution would not change from the size used in Ubuntu. Then I made a mistake in the Win recovery console and messed something up.

Ohh I still am going to get Ubuntu back, I enjoyed it while I had it. It was all too different, and fun, I just dont know if I'll use the dual boot or just run it from a virtual drive.

I'd probably run the virtual drive until I got more comfortable, I mean I have just spent the past 7-8 hours trying to save my stuff. :)

My suggestions would be to either try something like virtualbox, or doing a pendrive ubuntu

That's what I'm going to do use a clone drive. Trying to get all my stuff back on here now.. usually I'd be pissed, but after doing some many fresh installs to my phone.. its kinda weird/fun.

I would suggest installing ubuntu 10.10. I know a lot of people that are new to ubuntu are compeled to get the latest version of ubuntu but people who are long-time linux users, like myself are mostly against the UNITY enviroment that is in 11.04 & 11.10. IMO it really sucks.. Gnome is much better...
anyways, as to the problem in your OP.. when you install ubuntu for the first time it will detect all of your hardware and run it just fine with the exception on certain graphics cards and sound cards. this is so because the card manufacturers only have drivers for windows like ATI/AMD and NVIDIA.

If you have one of those, then you have to enable the proprietary drivers for it. I don't use 11.10 so I can't tell you where to find it, but you are looking for "additional drivers." When you start the GUI, it will automatically scan your system and tell you if you have the proper graphics card and then you just enale it. You will have to restart Ubuntu. Once restarted, you will have to go to visual settings and enable advanced settings and you will have your proper resolution.

Got Ubuntu on a pendrive. It works a lot better for me than using virtual Machine. Thanks guys, slowly but surely I am beginning to get used to Linux compared to Windows.

Just wait. You end up liking the Linux command line so much that the microsoft command line won't make sense anymore

I may update R&B to 3.4, I'm not completely sure yet. Updated mods are really moving and its hard to update all of them accordingly.

So as of now there isn't a link. Updating themes are time consuming, yet sorry I haven't had time to update it.
