Switching to Verizon

Lurker
So im switching to verizon and im looking at two phones in particular, the DX and the Samsung Fascinate, im leaning torwards the DX but can anyone give me the pros and cons of the DX so i know what to expect (good and bad) thanks guys :)

The DX has Froyo and the Fascinate does not (yet) :D
Con is that the DX has a locked bootloader and the Fascinate does not.

love my DX , the locked bootloader really isnt much of a issue mine is rooted with a custom rom. just not a custom kernel

I would be so pissed if I had a newer phone than the DX and I didn't have Froyo yet.

Or, if you could wait for a bit (and spend a little more $$$), there should be a handful of absolutely new phones coming...

What's not to love about the large display that the Droid X has!!

You may want to wait just to see what the new phones like Droid Bionic or what not come out but the only problem with waiting til something cooler comes out though is that once what your waiting for comes out, then something even cooler comes out.

In the end though it will all come down to what you like. Make sure you get something that YOU like and not something that someone tells you to like.

I have a Droid X. Rooted it and set it up the way I like it. I bought the expanded battery for it (the BH6X) but probably didn't have to. If you know how to set your apps and how often things sync you'll find the battery life of the Droid better than the salesperson at Verizon will tell you. With moderate use after being unplugged for about 16 hours I still have between 60-70% battery left. Before I bought the expanded battery I'd end the day around 40%.

I agree with this. I love the DX myself and I'm not rooted using LP+. The only item that I would love this phone to have is a front facing camera. If it had that, I would be truly content. I guess that's my excuse to get a XOOM to fill in that gap! :D (Now if I could just convince my wife of that!)

I've owned both phones. The Droid X is better, hands down. The Fascinate has a poor user interface compared to the X. There's more menu navigation required to conduct certain tasks, such as email and other issues.

There's a problem with syncing your email on the fascinate as well. If you exit out of email, it will stop checking for it every few minutes, as opposed to running a background service like the Motorola.

Also, because it's OS is outdated, you won't have access to a lot of apps in the market, such as Google Earth and others.

Also, the Fascinate uses Microsoft Bing. There is no google on the phone and you can't add it. All of your searches turn up through there, so you'll have to deal.

The Fascinate does have a far better display and an excellent camera, neither of those outweight the Droid X's programming though. Motorola did it right when it comes to customization of this phone.

The Fascinate use an app menu system that doesn't alphabetize. It goes in the order you installed, and you have to scroll to the side. It doesn't sound like an issue, but it is VERY awkward when you use it.

Samsung has done very little for its customers. Yes, they make beautiful hardware and it's reliable. However, the software is very outdated and you'll end up missing out on a lot of good free apps.

+1 to the above comments. I have a rooted, overclocked & undervolted DX which has taken everything I've thrown at it without issue and I'm seeing 2 days+ between charges with average use (awesome!).

Samsung doesn't seem to care about its customers the way Moto, HTC and others do...but I say this based on what I've heard/read in the forums, so I could be way off never having owned a Sammy Android. Still, reading the comments from so many who are lamenting having to stay on Eclair really turns me off to Samsung.

Having owned a Droid X since September I am very satisfied with my investment - speed is great, screen is just awesome, call quality is crystal clear and I've yet to have a call drop. I find I use the camera more often than I thought I would (pictures quality is on par with my Casio Exilim camera), also the camcorder function with HD is great, too. In its current state (rooted, OC/UV with the stock ROM/Blur) I'm getting 1700-1800 on Quadrant and 17.5 on Linpack - not shabby at all.

If you can't wait then I'd go for a Droid X, if you can wait 1-3 months then there may be some even better dual-core, LTE-enabled phones available. Either way I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Best of Luck :D

I'd see when that Bionic is due out. In the same predicament with one of my kids. Needs a new phone but a bunch of them are due out and the DX is on "end of life" status.

Never even the thought of a dropped call since owing the DX.

Ha! I am seeing rumors saying March for an Incredible 2, and May for the Bionic and the Droid X2 Tegra 2 dual-core device. You want to wait? You'll wait forever.
