swype to type

I really liked swype. Until it started freezing up my phone. Middle of a swype the phone would start ringing and then it's stuck in a loop - can't do anything til I pull the battery.

another example of why i guess I might not be cut out for beta. I didn't just sign up for a $3000 + contract to be part of a testing group whose phone would consistently freeze and or force close on and on.

Again though just trying to understand - is the reason there are bugs with these apps because the developers don't write good linux or is it because there are quirks with the OS that have nothing to do with the dev's abilities as programmers? Where do all these weird app problems come from?
I think it may just be you. Never had any of these issues.

I think a lot of these types of problems are caused by apps being ported over from other phones. Swype, as I understand it, is such a program. It wasn't developed for the Droid and is not optimized for the Droid system. Therefore it causes some problems for some folks. It caused frequent force closes and lagging on my phone, others have been more lucky.

Just my data point - I've never had a single issue w/Swype causing any problems w/my phone...it has been very well behaved.

That said, it wasn't a formal release so there certainly may be some issues when running it, but those appear to be more the exception than the rule.

I've had a couple issues where I'd switch to the symbols key, but it'd still type the letter, and vice versa. Only happened a couple times. Also, sometimes the intuition is completely off. Sometimes it adds spaces where I didn't want them.

I think it'd be great if it had the same auto corrections the physical keyboard has (i.e. capitalizing, spacing, punctuation). Maybe the future incarnations will, I just hope we'll get a chance at them.

since there are so many swype entries, i will try this one and hope no one jumps on me for it. i am having trouble getting swype to let me type a lowercase "i" without it auto capitalizing it for me. i want it lowercase. i have tried all the tricks, adding the lowercase i to the dictionary, but it still keeps capitalizing it. i've got all the auto options off. anyone have any ideas? i love swype, but i am stick of trying to get that i to be lowercase, takes forever, sort of negates the point. thanks for any ideas.

You want a lower case I by itself? When I hit the i key the word chooser comes up and a lower case "i" is the 4th choice. Just tap on that.

swype installed after using better keyboard since day one....after 10 minutes better keyboard removed....swype rules.

that doesn't actually work for me. here's what i'm trying to do. i want to, say, send a text. i want to type "i need to go to the store." i hit the i, then i go to swype "need" and the i is automatically capitalized for me. another instance would be if i go to type "there is something i need." i swype something, then i hit i, then i go to swype need, and the i is automatically capitalized. i have even tried to hit the i, then hit the space bar, then swype the new word, but it still capitalizes. maybe i am just a crazy person (oh so likely), but i cannot figure out how to make just a plain old lowercase i (i do not use caps). any ideas? feel free to make fun of me if i'm just being dumb, but i really can't figure this out. thanks for any help.

gidget the problem is you want to use all lower case when it's not proper english to do so therefore most texting programs have a built in function to capatilize the letter I when it's sent by itself. You're wanting to go against the grain

Not sure then. But it does make me wonder why someone would prefer to make themselves look dumber by never using capital letters.

i wasn't actually looking for a value judgement on how caps make you smarter. but thanks for the snark, very helpful. if anyone knows how to keep the i lowercase (as i am able to do in every single other keyboard program i have, including the droid's physical and on screen ones), let me know, it would be very much appreciated. thanks!

Thanks for posting the "tips and tricks" link. I have been using Swype for a few weeks and had not seen it. it makes it even easier.

The easiest way to do it is probably to swype a 2 letter word like it or in and backspace to leave just the i. It will stay lowercase when you do it that way.

thanks! not the most elegant solution, but it works. wish i could just turn off the auto capitalization of the i, not sure why that is not an option. anyhow, thanks for the idea, it's a good workaround.

Wait, will swype still auto correct if you disable the DROID's auto correct?

if not, that could be the answer - but then that takes out all the auto corrects....

jfc, why is everyone making an issue about the use (or lack thereof) of capital letters?

Is there a full moon out or something, or is this just all of a sudden turning into troll central?
