Background data allows apps to update as needed. With background data turned off, it prevents apps from just accessing the internet when the apps want. However, if you cut background data off, you cannot connect to the market via 3G or 4G. If you want access to the market, you will have to enable background data before you start up the app.
yeah. I would turn it off but for the market. I'm far too lazy to click a widget every time I want to look for a new app. I leave it on and set all the apps to only sync every twelve hours and then turn off all the ridiculous ones that nobody ever uses (stocks news nascar) individually just for good measure. I still get 48 hours on a charge with minimal use and 8-12 hours with fairly typical use
