Root Taking the plunge....

From our new rooting guide (tip of the topper to ocnbrze!) -

If you ever plan on using Google Wallet please read this very carefully. There is a very good chance that you can brick your secure element which is what allows you to make secure transactions using Google Wallet. Please do the following before you do anything else in the guide.

Go to and open your Google Wallet. Then go into menu>settings>reset Google Wallet. THAT'S IT!!!!

You will need to do this before doing any of the following in this guide. And the same goes for every time you flash a rom.

Here is the original thread:
PSA: Clear Google Wallet Settings Before Flashing ROM/Hard Resets! - xda-developers

So all clear on the steps. :)

Reset Google Wallet from inside the app before factory data reset, yes??

Yessir that was one of my first moves before i rooted lol.. and the reason that i want meanrom so bad. I for one use gwallet alot and meanrom alows it to work flawlessly with root... from what i read

Awesome guys thanks for the help. I am going to verify the nandroid, download MeanRom and then get to flashing.Thank you so much i really appreciate it.

One other question. Since i made the nandroid do i need to back up any apps in titanium backup? Or would that be unneccsary?

**UPDATE** After following your directions RX i can confirm that the nandroid is there.
Also.. everytime i boot back into the system from recovery i have an error report.
which i dont send. lol Im assuming this is normal.

Nandroids are useful for going backwards. Its basically a complete system restore for if you run into trouble.

Titanium backup is useful going forwards. I would backup all user apps and data with titanium. Dont backup any system (red) applications.

I make regular app backups on a frequent schedule, especially as my app mix and data use progresses.

nandroid backups, less often.

I make an app+data backup alongside of nandroids, especially before flashing new roms.

With any 1.22-based rom, Wallet should work just fine.

Sure, use the batch option to backup your apps and data. I think it can backup your texts now too and other stuff, like wifi access points.

don't restore system apps though, they are in red

Thanks fellas. I have downloaded meanrom v31 ( latest ) on my laptop im going to go ahead and back up a few things in titanium now. Thanks for the explanation. That all makes so much sense now. Im really excited im getting the hang of this. Couldnt have done it without you guys tho so thank you.

I am now happy i bought a 16gb class 6 card when it was on sale.:)

OK looks like i have everything backed up. RX- I dont have the pro version but after using it.. im definetly going to have to donate and get it. Should i back up " HTC Sense 3.5.2214...7.365039(desktop)" im not sure what that is. But everything else is good to go all backed up

Edit* BTW the one im questioning is in green. when i click it to choose what to do it says it is currently running and i must stop its process to back it up. Im assuming that i do not need to back it up but you know what happens when you assume ASS(of)uME lol

Not sure what it is either, have an idea it might put your desktop order like it is now, I don't know though.

green though, should be ok. make a nand quickly of your new rom after you get it flashed, then if you mess up, you can go back to it if you delete something or mess up something trying to arrange it.

OK here we go.. this is the part that i get most nervous with.. i have it downloaded now im going to follow RX's instructions in post 11. I will keep you guys updated!

I'm not seeing "open command prompt" should phone be In the twrp recovery or just the hboot menu? Should I be right clicking on something specific?

This is where I'm at.. Hope this helps

that last screen shot, you need to be in recovery, use the volume button down to scroll to recovery. then hit power button to select it. TWRP should open up.

Wipe in there as Rx told you with wipe menu, then use install menu. you will have to navigate to your rom and then flash it

edit: after you get this first rom on, install Quickboot from the playstore, it gets you into recovery quickly! :)

ok so thats why the command prompt isnt popping up?

ok, I have never used adb for anything to this point.

The way I flash the rom is to put it onto the phone, I use recovery and mount the phone with the cable hooked to the pc.

I highlight the rom and drag and drop it right onto the drive the phone makes in windows. then I unmount the usb, sometimes on pc and on phone, but always on the phone.

then I go to the wipe menu of the TWRP recovery and do the wipes.

then I use the install menu block on the recovery. Have to locate the rom in the directory that shows up, then flash it.

also, for meanrom after a certain version, you have to have the latest TWRP, 2.2.1, in order for it to handle the size of the rom, I understand. Adding google now increased the size to the point where the older version of TWRP couldn't handle it.

the boot.img is where the kernel is at. if you are flashing your first rom you can stick with the stock kernel, if you like. i'm not sure what the mean rom comes with. but if you want to use that kernel then you will need to extract the boot.img from the file first. the directions rx gave was on how to flash the kernel that comes with the rom. you can flash the rom normally in recovery.

edit: in a bit i will add some stuff in the after root section of the dummies guide on how to flash roms and kernels with hboot 1.15

i have 2.2.1.. i checked in the install folder and meanrom isnt there.. and for some reason im not seeing my phone as docked with my pc.. do i fist have to hit " mount" in recovery for my pc to see my phone?

In the mount menu i have:

[ ] mount system
[ ] mount data
[x]unmount cache
[x]unmount sd card [x] unmount internal

[x] use external sd [ ] use internal storage

{ Mount usb storage }

in my understanding, you took the ota so you have the latest kernel already. the rom is based on or incorporates the ota as well...

until we have some custom kernels you want to flash, or you flash jb, the kernel you have should be the one you need.

so you should just be able to flash the rom in recovery and be good to go.
