Tapatalk disabled on AF?

Well, sometimes the virtual keyboard takes a few liberties when you search for stuff on your phone...

That's how I ended up on the "big <censored by the prudish mods>" site...

(Just kidding about the mod part... oh, and the naughty site too)

Are you really wondering that?

It's easy to stop wondering; the most prominent thing pointed out by Phases and other staffers in this thread and another one on the same subject is that they want security first, for all of us.

Knowing that, how can one wonder what would be done if an exploit or vulnerability emerged in the new software?

They'd pull it and get going on fixing it.

And once it's fixed put it back in service right? Why not the same with Tapatalk?
Any idea when your app will be out? Please excuse me if I missed it I haven't read the whole tread.

It was said that there is no intention to re-enable Tapatalk.

"Instead of Tapatalk we are going to focus our efforts on our new Phandroid app - which is to include complete support for AF! We've been working on this for some time now and hope to have the finished product available before the end of August."

I know heard it all before but I don't really want a different news reader for ever forum I go to. My question was why not support it again since it's been fixed? If the AF app is found to have a security risk will you pull it forever? Will your app be a paid or free app?

Early indications were that the AF app will be free and ad supported.

Incidentally, that is the second time you've posted, "..your app.." when referring to the AF utility being worked on. I have nothing to do with the development and deployment of that app.

sorry I thought you were a moderator and thus affiliated with the site.
Please replace "Your app" with "Their app" :D

As far as the re-deployment of Tapatalk goes, nothing has been announced to that effect; it appears it is pulled for security reasons here permanently, although that exact word was not used by Phases in his statement.

I was hoping that there would be dialog and eventual solutions exchanged between admins and techs here and the Tapatalk developers so that users of those types of utilities would have a choice.

Personally I have no need for them as my Eris has always loaded and displayed pages in forums quite well using the mobile view feature and, here, using the "AF Mobile" skin available in the drop-down menu on the bottom-left of each page.

using that mobile skin in comparison to tapatalk is like trying to start a fire with stones instead of a lighter

Surely you understand that not all who do not use Tapatalk for forum browsing and posting fit into that analogy at all.

i think those that disagree simply never used the paid version of tapatalk or are brown nosers. lol, the difference in ease between the two is just so obvious

Why would a user purchase or even be interested in something not needed by that user?

Also, "..brown nosers..," as an assessment of somebody who disagrees with you, seems desperate.

Again, the admin and mods here have pointed out that Tapatalk is being replaced because of security issues that could have affected us all to a negative extent much worse than the inconvenience, the temporary inconvenience, of the loss of that utility.

Phases explained that before the end of August they hoped to provide a secure and functionally similar utility for those who need such a thing... for free.

Not even three bucks. ;)

because you think that cant be hacked?

Perhaps you can gain some insight, and perhaps relief from your posted feelings of having something stolen from you or being cheated or whatever, by transferring that worry about a possibility of the AF utility someday gaining a vulnerability to the reality of it already having happened with Tapatalk.

Who the hell NEEDS an android phone?

You could call him "desperate" or you could also call him "somewhat accurate" when "disagreement" comes in the form of shouting down anyone who happens to "disagree" with the state of things.

"It's for security!" Yeah, yeah next I'll be hearing that if we don't defend the site with our lives, the terrorists win!

Before anyone feels the need to cast me as someone accusing the site of trying to gain some revenue with its impending app, realize that I said that it seemed (and still does) that any competing apps are disabled in favor of it. That does not necessarily have anything to do with money, but it can.

My issue was that you don't win in an opensource like software arena by shutting out the competition, you do it by being better. If you can't be a better app, then you have to resort to tactics like this and marketing research shows that customers are more receptive to choices being made for them when you convince them that it is for their best interest.

So, no app and this fabled Phandroid app are better than a Tapatalk app because of security. Well, the "no app" claims can be measured and that is pretty compelling, but making these statements about what is essentially vaporware is akin to what MerF was implying.

Shouting "Security Security Security!!!11!!" from the roof tops looks bad, too. It comes down to whether you trust the site leadership or not. I do more so than not, but I still think it looks sketchy. That's all. I don't support the site as heavily as you do, Frisco but I still try to compensate them with the value I've gotten out of it and I think they deserve that.

The theories going on around all this are crazy. I already said once before, here's another (slightly less organized) version:

It has nothing to do any crazy scheme or ploy to get users to do what we want. It has nothing to do with money. It has nothing to do with ads. How many times do I have to say that?

One security breach and thus the removal of one app hardly qualifies as "any competing app gets disabled", or at least the context it seems to be delivered with, might I add.

It took me FOREVER to get Rob to install it. At least it felt like forever to me. And then this happened. And considering who was targeted, I'm not about to spend my time trying to convince him to put it back. I have no desire to try. He has no desire to reinstall it.

I'm not shouting security from the rooftops. But that IS what got it pulled - and rightfully so. Then, I hear, they patched it. And again, and then again. (At some point mid-patching, it was tested to still work. Fun fact there.)

Now that it IS pulled and off the servers - THAT is the very point we are at. We are not screaming security and refusing to hit an "enable" button. It is gone completely and to bring it back I would have to fight tooth and nail.

So let me back up a bit. Again, it took me forever to get Rob to install it. Finally he did, then this happened, and we were targets. I'm not about to try to get him to install it again if he doesn't want to. And he doesn't.

Now I'm sorry some people used TT and I'm very sorry they're upset it is gone. But whether or not we support it is OUR decision and WE have to be the ones to support that decision and deal with whatever comes along with it. Right now we'd rather not have to worry about it since we have too much going on as it is, and that's just something people are going to have to accept.

Is it a shame? Yes. Would I like to use TT? Yes. Will I ever? Maybe, but not right now. Does that bother me. Yes. What can I do? Seems like moving on is my only option, so that is what I will do.

I'm trying to be as transparent as I can about this whole situation, yet people still insist on acting like there's some bigger reason or scam going on. We don't need to scam our users for anything. We love our site and we love our users. We will not take advantage of them and we want to make this place as enjoyable as possible.

With that said, the few that get angry and leave and never return over some plugin, or who sit there and call us "greedy" (sound like a familiar adjective to anyone?) and blame it on money/ads/some-sinister-plot are more than welcome to find another community that better meets their needs.

phases dont go crazy over it.. conspiracy theories are just that theories. it drives conversation. we all know in the end we have to live with the decision and i for one have accepted it. Does it comfort me, not really but im sure you can appreciate freedom of speech :). I did enjoy Tapatalk and will miss it here dearly, but it is what it is. the 2 dollars i spent really is not an issue since many other forums use it and i still get my monies worth. As you can see I am going no where, im sure neither will anyone else. Probably was just venting done by most.

Thats for taking the time to communicate with us bro
