"Tasker" is a BEAST! (in a good way)

1) I'd like it to say the name of the contact instead of the phone # of the SMS sender if the person is in my contacts. I found a post about using SayMyName Dessert for this but I haven't been able to get it to work as the post just mentioned the product but no detailed steps.
Hello j13young,

I'm the developer of SayMyName. At the moment I'm trying to support Tasker. Unfortunately, I can't purchase the app. Would you be so kind and test it for me?

You can find a version that should support Tasker here.

Thanks
Tom

Is it possible to create a task based on a notification? For example, I am using SportsTap for notifications on some baseball games. But, let's say I want to use a crowd cheering for the notification sound. Can I set Tasker up to play a specific sound when I get a notification?

Keep in mind notifications are not SMS messages. This is just one example. I get notifications from several programs, and some of them play the default SMS notification tone. I want to use tasker as a custom notification utility for programs.

Can this be done?
From Tasker's FAQ:
Taskter FAQ said:
Can Tasker respond to notification in the system status bar ?
Unfortunately not, Android does not allow reading of the status bar notifications.

I just thought I'd mention - you can get the app cheaper (and the Developer makes more money) if you buy directly through the developer's site instead of through the Market.

Sorry if this has already been discussed in this thread - I looked through all pages but didn't see it mentioned yet.

I downloaded the trial a few days ago and ponied up the ~$5.30 after one day of playing with it. It really is amazing. And I haven't noticed any battery drain yet - but I don't have any tasks set up by location. I won't use that feature until the dev bases location on towers (which is listed on the ToDo list).

I second getting the app direct from the developer.
I did it because I thought it would take the 7 days to figure out how to make it do what I wanted. Seriously, the title of this thread is no joke; this app is HUGE!
Instead I configured it to replace 3 other apps in the first hour. After that I got it to do things I had been looking for since I got my phone. That alone made it worth the $5.
While I didn't need it, the fact that he offered the extended trial period at all should be supported.

Has anyone had any small bugs after installing this?

I've been having problems connecting to wireless after pushing the wireless icon from the power control widget. I have to go to settings, wireless networks, wi-fi settings for it to find a wireless signal and connect. If I don't do this, it'll stay on 3G. This only started happening after installation of tasker.

Maps also force closes too more often... Edit: This seems to be a maps issue. Many people are posting at the market that it has been force closing quite a lot.

Other than that, this program is amazing.

Sorry if I missed it. But, has anyone figured out how send email with Tasker. I can compose email; but haven't figured out how to program the send function.

Seriously this app is insane. I admit it takes a while to learn to use it right, but it replaces so many apps and does some seriously good things.

Anyone else want to chime in on the uses for this, I currently use it to turn phone silent at church, vibrate at work, wifi on when I get home, off when I leave, silent at night when I sleep, customized car mode, and a phone locate

Seriously, any other ideas... this thing is insane!!

Right now I'm using it to turn on GPS for specific applications; Google Sky, Latitude, Maps, Movies, Navigation, Places, Speedview and WeatherBug Elite. As well as turning off the ringer and Notifications when the phone is face down. Turning on or off GPS via SMS (I have Lookout as a fallback). And I've been playing with GPS location sent via SMS on keyword retrieval from SMS. I've been trying to work out sending GPS location via email but there is no automated way to dynamically compose and send mail. It seems that only composition of the email is possible. Or the sending of a pre-composed email. GPS locating is limited by sky view though. Outdoors, accuracy is about 15 feet, inside a wooden structure accuracy drops to about 80 feet and inside a steel structure accuracy is out to 150+ feet. So, if I lost my phone out in the woods (I do go hiking) I'm good to go. If I left it in a warehouse somewhere I'm most likely screwed. I've also programmed an audio file to trigger (even if the ringer/notifications/media audio have been turned off) from a SMS in case I get within the distance of the lost phone and still can't locate it visually.

Hi all.
I just got tasker this morning because I am sick of having to manually toggle my wifi on and off when leaving my house. I am sure that I will learn how to do more the longer I use this, but right now I am having trouble making it turn wifi on when near my SSID. I have the context of wifi near set to my SSID, and the task being wifi on, then I set an exit task of wifi off, but it shuts my wifi and doesnt turn it back on whenever I shut my screen.
Any help you can offer is much appreciated.

To everyone experiencing battery drain issues, I'm willing to bet you are running a "wifi near" profile, right?

I had the same issue. It's not a bug. It's the way tasker checks wifi. The problem is, in order for tasker to check whether or not the "wifi near" profile is true, it has to keep turning your wifi on and off. You can do one of two things. You can either change the frequency of how often it checks for wifi connectivity, or you can change the profile to check for something else instead.

What I wanted to do was have wifi automatically enabled when I got home. Instead of using the wifi near context, I switched it to GPS using only network location, and I've noticed it barely touches my battery anymore.

i thought wifi near was supposed to be more battery efficient than gps? at least that's how i interpreted it from reading through this thread and the faq...

Yeah I am kinda wondering about which is the best location setting to use for battery life. I don't think I can use net at my house as the signal is poor there so if I lose signal it launches the profile again.

EDIT: If I use net location and wifi near will it only toggle wifi when I am in that location radius?

So I attempted multiple ways of toggling my wifi, and with the "wifi near" context applied while IN my house, when I look at the tasker notification bar icon it says no active profiles, and my wifi turns off any time i put my phone to sleep.
Can anyone help me out?

for right now i turned off wifi near, and just have it turn wifi on/off when i'm within a 3km radius of home and work...i have the radius set so large because i have it set to check location by network only.

we'll see how that works. for my purposes it should be alright, i guess...

Wifi near is more battery efficient than using GPS location. It is not more battery efficient than using Network location. You just need to set a larger radius for it to work.

Edit: Do exactly what the poster above me did. I did the same thing for work and home. Works wonderfully, and barely uses any battery.

Can someone help me out? I set up a location-based profile for work based on net (no gps or wifi). I set up a 2k radius. All it is set up to do is to enter silent mode (but I have it switched to vibrate only). Tasker starts the profile fine when I'm close to work.

The problem is exiting the profile. I was plenty far away from the radius for well over two hours today and I kept checking to see when it would exit the profile, but it never did. I have all of the scanning times set to default. What could be hanging it up from exiting the profile?

Ok, so I set up a 1km radius around my house, with enter task being wifi on, and exit task being wifi off...seems to be working fine

Have you set up an exit task? Tap on the task you set up on the profiles page, and hit add exit task, and make that return it to normal.

apparently it's not good for my area...my home/work areas overlap. the problem is that when i'm in the overlapping area (i.e. both profiles are on) and then i go into just the one area, the exit task for the one i'm leaving turns wifi off.

any idea how i can correct that?

This is one crazy app....rough learning curve even for a geek like me but I just need to sit down and really figure it out.....any suggestions on the easiest way to start?

can this work in conjunction with "Where's my Droid" app? So when I send it the 'attention word' it can also enable GPS?

You can specify which profile takes priority if the values in two different profiles conflict. They call it "collusion handling". Click on the offending profile and select 'edit'. In the bottom right of the screen you'll see a little button with a spanner and screwdriver symbol. Select that one. You can then select what happens for it's Collusion Handling. Either 'Abort New Task', 'Abort Existing Task' or 'Run both together'.

If you don't want the exit task from the zone you are leaving to interfere with the zone you are entering, (I think) you need to select it to 'Abort existing Task'.

Not had to use this yet so I'm uncertain if this does as I think it does. An alternative could be to get rid of the 'wi-fi' off exit task entirely if you want wi-fi on in both areas? Or you could add a 'Time' context to your work and home profiles, and make sure that the times do not overlap.

Hope I've helped some!
