Root Teaching Gramma to root her incredible

yes , I didn't mean the internal memory. Counting the internal memory it shows as 3 drive letters. The internal mem; and then 2 more drives. I think it's like a partition or something(???) I didn't partition it, but it's how it's always been.

Does appear you have a partition there, I've never seen it before. Unless you have another peripheral installed. USB stick, external hard drive, etc confusing the issue.

You may benefit from reformatting the SD card. If you do end up doing this, use the full format option, not quick. Again, don't forget to move the contents of the card to the PC first as they'll get wiped out otherwise.

ok! might be getting close (lol). I was able to get it to recognize the pb31img file and it installed. I then installed the superuser file and it says 'complete'.

NOW, how do i know if it worked?

It booted up and I now have an app called Superuser (earlier after rooting initially I had an app called "superuser permissions"), does this mean that everything worked?

Sounds like you got clockwork re-installed ok. If you installed the su.zip from clockwork per the instructs then reboot to system and see if superuser is there. If so, download a root app and see if su permissions are granted. Then you have working root.

Looks like you beat me to the punch there lol. Download Rom Manager and then choose the uppermost option in that app to reflash recovery. If that all works, you have working root and it's a step worth doing anyway.

I selected the option to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. when it asked for permissions it said "deny if you don't know what this is" (paraphrased). I denied because I didn't know what it was (lol). Now I'm gettin an error message "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Why did it tell me I could deny if it didn't want me to .

edit: I uninstalled and re-installed the app and this time I accepted the permissions and it said it worked.

Well sounds good then. Now you can decide if you need your apps/data back. If so, restore your nand backup assuming it was made recently. If you'd like to forge ahead on 2.3.4, you can do so and there's always the low space patch that's flashable in clockwork if you run into that again.

Sorry if I pushed you into the clean install method against your wishes. Perhaps installing the OTA and then re-rooting would have been a better option as it turns out, I guess I missed the mark on your intent. I know it's more work but I really like this route because it typically results in no issues. Also, consider getting Titanium Backup to avoid all these issues. It backs up apps and data and can restore them even when the phone is fully wiped. Whatever happens, I hope you end up happy in the end.

Thanks so much. I'm in the process of installing my apps now using Astro (I have a lot of apps, ashamed to say how many lol but I've been at the reinstallation for about 30 minutes and I'm just on the letter L). It will take a while, but seems like things are working fine so the result is worth it.

I intend to finally uninstall some of the stock apps . Hopefully Vz navigation is one that I can get rid of. Maybe after dumping some of the bloat stuff; I won't run into low space again.

It's moving along smoothly though so I can't complain about having to do a clean install. Sometimes that is the best way. I just hate I didn't reach out for help sooner. With your help, I probably would have been finished with the whole rooting/gingerbread thing about 11 hours sooner!

oh good! I'm going to grab that now. Thank you. Do I just need to install the fixdata.zip file? I haven't installed any roms or anything.

Good morning. To preface, I'm new to the forum. I've read through it from time to time over the past year to look for fixes to common problems I've experienced with my Incredible. I am experiencing the same problem many others have with the low memory warning. When it comes up my GMail no longer pushes to the phone. I'd like to root the phone.

I am currently running Android 2.3.4 with software number 4.06.605.3. I have the software update 4.08.605.2 currently being pushed to my phone, but it will not install. I am curious, can I use the instructions at the top of this thread for rooting my phone and then stop when I get to the instructions for upgrading to Gingerbread or do I need to take another route? Just want to make sure I'm clear on which instructions I should be following so I don't inadvertently damage the phone. Thanks.

You can in fact gain root in 2.3.4 but not s-off (security off). The big thing is that s-off lets you flash files that are not 'official'. You can still flash roms, but if you find yourself in a hard place with your phone it might be harder to fix the problem without s-off.

That's how to gain root, then downgrade to 2.2 to gain s-off. Scotty knows his stuff and can definitely help you with any questions you may have.

If you wish to proceed otherwise (I don't recommend it) you may gain root by using unrevoked 3.22. Instead of the version linked in this thread.
