Root Teaching Gramma to root her incredible

Well, thanks to all who helped. I got through it and presumably everything should be better. I had backed up a lot with my backup pro, so that helped the setup considerably.

If I want to remove some of the bloatware, what's the best way to do that?

Again, thank you so much for the help, mmolitor87 and iowa.

Make a nandroid backup in clockwork before doing anything, then save a copy of it on your PC if you really like to be stealthy. ;)

Then you can use Titanium Backup to freeze apps or in Chuck Norris mode to completely remove any app (careful here, although that's why the nand backup). Same goes for Root Explorer...can remove altogether from /system/app. There is removal by adb as well but it's far more involved if you don't currently utilize the Android SDK.

What I would recommend (after you made a nandroid backup), is use TI backup to freeze any apps you suspect are unnecessary. And then wait a few days/weeks. If you don't have any problems you can think about deleting them. If problems do show up, unfreeze apps till the problems go away, try and figure out which app was responsible, and refreeze the rest.

That's excellent advice.

finally got around to rooting today.

thanks for the great writeup to make it simple for newbies to get caught up on rooting!

help. I tried these instructions because I had the low space message too. I got as far as renaming the file to update.zip and installing it in recovery. I keep getting message "installation aborted". Any advice? Thank you

Need to be more specific... what were you renaming update.zip? Did you successfully root the phone?

sorry. yes I did get it rooted and it shows s-off. I got all the way up to this step in << >> below and when I try to update from sd card it starts but stops and says "installation aborted" :

<<Now to apply the update!

Rename '5059e5b6c5b2.OTA_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZ ON_WWE_4.08.605.2-

3.26.605.1_release_222220.zip" to 'update.zip'. Same applies as above. You may not

see the '.zip' part!

Put update.zip on your SD card.

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. If not

prompted, navigate into recovery and select to update from update.zip. Sometimes this

update gives an error and presents you with a red triangle screen. If this happens,

press volume up and the power button to get to the menu. Use volume up/down to

navigate to 'run update.zip from sdcard' and hit the power button to begin.>>

The full error message is (I hope I typed it correctly; the text is so small even with my reading glasses, I can hardly see it lol)

ERROR message:

since you did the other steps we can assume you have your card formated to fat32 and that you really renamed the file to "update.zip" not "update.zip.zip". what version of android are you currently running? have you verified the md5 of the update file (you could try to redownload the update file again)?

Thank you for replying. Yes I have the sd card formatted for fat 32. I have android 2.2 version. I have s off and the verizon gingerbread update is appearing in the notification bar. Can I just install that?

ok, I grabbed the md5 calculator. What am I looking for as far as verifying it the file I have? What do I compare it to?

Can I just accept the update that's appearing on my phone now ? After accepting the update, then can I install the 'recovery' and 'superuser' files?

You can do that. The RUU is a cleaner way to install as it will include a full wipe of all partitions. So if you do the OTA method, you may need to factory reset afterward but that's not a huge deal either for that matter. Give it a shot if you want.

ok. I did step one of your instructions (Do a clean install of 2.3.4 by following this post, using the RUU method if possible: How To] Return To Stock Gingerbread) . I'm now showing version 2.3.4

It seems to have factory reset my phone. Is it possible to get the phone back the way I had it by using my nandroid backup? Or do I need to complete the re-root step before trying to restore from my backup?

stuck again.

In this step of your instructions for How to Regain root with S off
<<2.) SD card must be formatted to FAT32. Once that's done, download the following file, rename to PB31IMG and place on the root of the SD card:
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
(Md5: e8ac35ddc1c37000bb0852d1f380b5bb)>>

should I rename this file PB31IMG or PB31IMG.zip? I renamed it PB31IMG.zip and I get an error when I try to install it in recovery.

You do NOT install the PB31IMG from recovery. It should be autodetected when you go to hboot. Most likely, you want to name the file PB31IMG as the .zip extention will typically be added by Windows when you move it to the card. If in doubt, use a file manager app on your phone once it's on the card. It should read PB31IMG.zip on the card. If there's an extra .zip extention (PB31IMG.zip.zip) edit the name to remove the second .zip.

I hope you aren't taken aback by the reset, I thought I was clear about the full wipe of all partitions that would occur. Anyway, you do need to proceed to get root however, if you Nandroid back to a 2.2 setup, you're not really gaining anything here except a radio update. And you will still have the low space issue most likely. If you have Titanium Backup or a similar backup app, you could root, then restore only market apps. You can also flash the low space fix in recovery since your original goal here was to get rid of that issue if I read correctly.

If the PB31IMG is not being auto recognized in hboot after several seconds, you likely don't have a FAT32 formatted sd card. Remember that reformatting a card wipes all contents so if you run into this, move everything off the card and onto the PC for safe keeping beforehand.

ok, i'm thoroughly confused now lol. It did not automatically recognize the PB31IMG file, so that's why I tried to navigate to get it to install. I tried naming it PB31IMG and then I tried PB31IMG.zip. It didn't automatically recognize either. Looks like my phone has a defect or something because it's not working with either method.

Yes, I was hoping I could do this and save all my settings as someone stated in thsi thread. That's why this method was so appealing to me because I thought it would save my settings.

Looks like I'm stuck now with s off but no root huh.

ohk, and where is the file manager on the 2.3.4 phone? (what is the app name). All my file manager apps are gone now after the reset. Is there one that was added with 2.3.4?

but I checked in windows before starting and it said FAT32. Also, I format all my cards in fat32 and have never formatted them any other way (wouldn't even know how lol).

I was hoping this would be easy to do. I've had my phone since release date and have put off rooting because it didn't seem easy until now. I must be doing something wrong. I've been at it for almost 12 hours now.

Thanks so much for your time though.

I do think for now I'm just going to try to restore my nandroid from 2.2 and just forget about gingerbread for now probably forever.

oh wait.. When I look at the disk drive of my phone it has 2 drive letters. which one am I supposed to be putting the PB31IMG file in? or does that matter?
(just grasping at straws here trying to figure out why it works for everyone but me)
