Telus Galaxy S2 (T989D) Ultimate Root and Optimization Guide with Steps

Thanks for this thread - I'm pretty tech savvy, but this rooting thing seems to be getting to me lol.. or maybe it's the cooler weather - who knows.

I know this has just recently been asked, but I'm trying to find the Telus 4.0.3 version, and I seem to be overlooking where the link is posted above. Could I bother to ask someone help me locate it (AND maybe perhaps edit the OP's link with the newer version of it so we don't need to browse a few pages to locate the link?). I found this actually threw a Google search. Thanks :)

Hi coangr. Check this Odin thread and you'll find a link to 4.0.3 for the Telus. Also, if you check SamMobile under the firmware section, you can find all the stock roms. The link for the stock roms is also in the All Things Root guide.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2X SGH-989D that I bought recently from Koodo. It's been unlocked, and I'm trying to switch over to Mobilicity, but so far I haven't had any luck. Since the phone is the exact same model at the Telus/T-Mobile variant, I thought there'd be no problem. When I put in a mobi sim, it finds the access point, but will not register on the network. Even when I dial *#*#2268#*#* and select 1700 as the preferred band, it still will not register. I haven't ported my number over yet, I've just done trials with other people's mobilicity sim cards.

All the Mobilicity sales people I've talked to seem to think its a some kind of lock that is built into the Koodo version. Has anyone had any experience with this, or is there another compatibility issue I'm overlooking?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My warranty has now expired on my Telus S2X, and I want to root. I want to see if I can improve battery life and also have the ability to back up my app data.

Does anyone know if there's a ROM for Jellybean yet? I know Samsung is planning on releasing JB for the S2X, but I'm impatient ;) I have JB on my tablet already, and want it on my phone too ;)

Any tips for a newb? I've never rooted before (this is only my second Android phone).

Hi dierna. The best tip I can give is after rooting make sure you do a backup in recovery. Its very important to have that. If you ever make a mistake, you can restore that good copy of your system. Also, if you try a rom and don't like it, you can restore that recovery backup and start over.

If you check the All Things Root guide you will find some Jellybean and ICS roms.

Thanks :-)

I will look at the thread and go from there. I want to root my tablet too, so hopefully it will go smoothly!

Just to clarify, the recovery backup is created in step 4 of the root guide, right? Or is this a separate step that isn't covered in the guide? I have a stock Telus T989D that has never been rooted, so obviously Titanium Backup or Nandroid aren't going to give me a backup ;)

The backup in recovery is covered in steps 10 and 11. I would wait until you install the superuser file and then make a backup. If you have to restore it someday, you wouldn't have to root again. Or you can make one before and after if you want to. Backups are around 1gb to 1.5gb.

There is also a guide here you can look at. The only difference is the buttons you hold to get to Odin download mode.

Ah, gotcha. It wasn't clear that the backup was done at the end, rather than before starting the root process.

I'm stuck here:
13. Once back at the main menu, choose INSTALL ZIP FROM SDCARD. Select CHOOSE ZIP FROM INTERNAL SDCARD. Navigate down to the usbStorage folder and select the su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip or su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip file. Go to main menu and reboot system.

When I selected the su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip file, I got the following:
SAM_0015.jpg

I haven't rebooted the system yet because I don't know if I'm supposed to. I put the file on the external SD - I have read elsewhere that is where you're supposed to put the file... but that shouldn't cause this problem should it?

Is the file corrupted? What is the next step in this case?

Ah, crap! I am on ICS, so I need the file referenced in this link, don't I? Did I totally screw this up, or can I just reboot my phone, paste the correct file onto my SD card and try to install superuser again?

Yes, try that superuser file. You might get an error and abort several times. That's normal. Just do it again.

That guide says it is for Tmobile only, and redirects readers to this guide if they're on Telus (which I am).

Yes, but that superuser file will work. Like I said in the post above somewhere, the only difference in rooting both phones is the buttons you press to get into Odin download mode.

Aha! Worked on the 3rd try :) I see the superuser icon, so it looks good! Thanks for your help. Now I'm backing up so I can flash a JB ROM.

You're welcome. :) Download something like titanium backup and try it to make sure you have root. Sometimes after you reboot you have to install superuser one more time then it should be good.

I haven't tried any of the JB roms lately. I know most of them used to have a few bugs still to work out.

You might want to give DarthStalker a try. Its based on ICS 4.0.4 but I've read good things about it. Version 3 is out now but he's working on version 4 and its supposed to be up by Friday.

And take a look at flashing a rom if you haven't seen it already.

I've read the flashing guide, but will read it through a few more times before I do it :)

Thanks for the recommendation of DarthStalker - it sounds really good. I'll try that and wait for Samsung to release JB and hope for a ROM built on that :)

I rooted my phone eons ago (it seems) using this guide and it has worked beautifully. Now there supposedly is a firmware upgrade for my phone. If I put that in it, will it screw up my phone since it's rooted?

It does say phones that have been rooted or modified with customized software may experience a failure during the upgrade process.

So I'd rather live with the old then screw up just to have new.

It says: current firmware: PDA:KJ3 / PHONE: KJ3 / CSC:KJ3 (TLS)

latest firmware: PDA:LE4 / PHONE:LE4 / CSC:LE4 (TLS)
Thanks!!!

You have Gingerbread and it wants to upgrade to ICS. If you are using the stock rom, all upgrading should do is unroot you and you will have to reroot. If you want to unroot and go back to stock first, you can follow this guide for using Odin and flash the stock Telus Gingerbread file, or, you can just use Odin to flash the stock Telus ICS file to upgrade from Gingerbread. Whichever you do, you will still have to reroot.
