Hi, I'm newbie to all these rooting thingy. I've a Telus SG2X and planned to switch to Petrol Canada mobility. Since this carrier is using different "data" plan (ie web browsing), I've to "root" this phone. Questions is after "rooting" this phone, do I need to unlock it? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Rooting isn't necessary to unlock your phone. I am not familiar with the carrier you want to use, so I can't comment on that.
I tried not to root the phone as I'm not familiar with the steps and afraid I might brick it. I'll do more research on the rooting first before performing the steps myself. Since PetrolCanada offers only Web Browsing (using port 80, I believe), there is no other way except rooting it. Thanks anyway.

Hi mcminna :hello: welcome to the forums. I don't remember seeing that happen before from rooting. The only thing I can suggest is a factory reset. Since you're rooted, you can use Titanium backup to backup your apps.

Hi Mick :hello: Welcome to AF. Try the Superuser file in this guide. It should work. If it says it aborted, flash it again. It may take a few times. Reboot and try Titanium again. If it doesn't say you have root, flash superuser one more time and it will work.

Great post the root guide for the Galaxy S2X SGT-T989D was real easy to follow what with the step-by-step directions and screen shots. However, like Mick, was experiencing, I can't seem to get root access even after several attempts at "flashing" the SU zip file via the CWM app.
Titanium Backup (TB) states that "I could not acquire root priviledges..."
I have installed BusyBox as well, to no avail.
I am at a loss here and just about at my wits end considering that I'm relatively new to the android smart phone world.
The Surperuser app shows up, all appears to have downloaded and installed properly accordingly to the screen shots provided and directions so I would welcome any suggestions to remedy this issue.

One other thing that I failed to mention that may have had an impact on getting the phone to "root" which I did - besides re-downloading and installing the Superuser zip file - I also removed/disabled the AVG anti-virus app that I had installed on the phone.
As I mentioned I was at my wits end late last night and was trying to determine what may be blocking the rooting of the phone, given that all appeared to downlaod and install properly as per your most excellent directions.
Then it dawned on me that the anti-virus app may be affecting it. So was it the re-download and install of the SU app, or removal of the anit-virus app, that allowed me to root the phone - I don't really know. However, it is something to consider.
Once again, great thread you've got here, lots of valuable information for newcomers such as myself. Well done you!!!!

Hi have questions on the rooting. Currently I've a S2X with Gingerbread 2.3.5.
1) After rooting and getting a su access, will the version remains as 2.3.5? and will all the existing apps installed be removed?
2) If I decided to flash with Cyanogenmode 10, will all the existing apps installed be removed?

1) Yes, your android version doesn't change. Rooting doesn't affect that. After rooting, you will still have all your apps.
2) Yes, when you flash a rom it will delete your apps. After rooting, use something like Titanium backup to backup your apps. I suggest reading through the posts in this guide. It will help make you a little more familiar with flashing roms.

You're welcome.
Yes, you can restore apps after you flash a ROM, but never restore system apps. Just apps you have downloaded. Titanium Backup is an app you use to backup your apps. A nandroid is a backup you make in recovery and it backs up your system. You should make a nandroid immediately after rooting. If you ever have a problem after flashing a ROM, or want to go back to stock ROM, you can just restore the nandroid. So it is VERY important to make one.You're welcome.

Hi Atmazzz, I've successfully rooted my S2X and everything goes smoothly at 1 go...Will try flashing ROMs later. Any recommendation on ROMs? I wants something like 'stable' (and no preference whether it's a JB or not) Thanks again and the instructions on page 1 are very very clear!!!

Hi Atmazzz, Read from forums that it's better to have TWRP as recovery tools than CWS. I've downloaded the zip file for this (TWRP-2.3.1.1-hercules.zip). The problem is that I do not have instruction to "execute" this file. Is it like using the same method as when I installed Superuser? (su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip)
Can you please point me to the installation instructions? Thanks.

Yes, TWRP is great and what I use. Yes, you would install a zip in recovery like you did superuser. Just make sure that it is made to do that and made for this phone. Do you have a link where you got it?
Another, and easy, way is to download GooManager from the play store. Install and open it. Tap your menu button and then select 'install openrecoveryscript'. Wait until it tells you it has been installed and you will have TWRP.
