Telus - htc desire 2.2

I just talked to somebody at Telus and he gave me completely different info. He said the 2.2 delay was going to last until Q1 of January. At this point I don't even care because after this weekend, I'll be on Froyo regardless.

Doesn't a non-official/authorised version void our warranties though? What happens if the phone messes up after?

From everyone I have talked to, including HTC. If you do anything to your phone you void the warranty end of story. I confirmed this twice today. After this weekend I won't care though.

To double confirm, yes any modification that removes your current carriers branding will void the warranty. I've had my phone for about a month now and I honestly don't think it will crap out on me anytime soon unless I do something stupidly myself. (ie drop it in a puddle of water or brick it) But.. (knock on wood) I think I'll be pretty safe and careful not to.

I feel the same way. I am giving it till this weekend and debranding my phone. Worst comes to worse I will get a new improved model when this craps out.

telus smart-phone website is working just fine again. and it still says 2.2 coming in October for the desire.
like said by a previous poster, come nov1 i'll have 2.2 no matter if its directly from them or not.

its unacceptable.

There are so many more things that are likely to void your warranty than modifying the software. Inside the phones in several locations are little stickers that turn color if they get wet. They also turn color over time sometimes. Any impact damage regardless of functionality. Got a little scratch on your glass? well you dropped it and thats why it doesnt work.

If you've owned your Desire for 48 hours and everything works it's likely to continue working, although I bought mine outright and kinda choked a little when I did the upgrade knowing I know longer had any protection. The YAFFS2 file system Android uses is very efficient when you consider how NAND memory acts. Now I'm not sure what HTC's track record is for quality control but I did try and find threads about broken HTC's and such before I bought mine. I couldn't find much.

MOE3754 - I was talking about you when I said it was mentioned in this thread! After reading this I looked at the other thread and then a few more and took the plunge. I also DID HAVE SOMETHING GO WRONG with one of the 3 I flashed. I was able to recover easily with a battery removal.

When I was an early adopter of the original USA-only iPhone 2g (don't flame!) I had to constantly hack it to do any updates, or get any apps. I must have bricked about 3 of them (all could be recovered - one I had to wait a week for till someone came out with a new tool). It's only software and can usually (almost always?) be fixed if you just google it or ask for help.

Don't let fear stop you from doing this upgrade, you DONT NEED TO ROOT, its really like 3 steps and it does make a huge improvement. I really wish I did it earlier except theres alot of different routes and methods and I didnt really like any until I saw this one.

The Telus push is coming eventually, why bother? - Well when you do it you get a clean, unbranded (no extra apps you cant remove) 2.2. Apparently you also get future updates when HTC makes them available over the air, and you dont have to wait for Telus anymore (if you keep the gold card in). You also get the satisfaction of not having to rely on a company that doesn't seem to care too much about getting you the updates you want. You'll notice an immediate improvement.

Thanks again MOE3754!

Zak

I agree Zak, which is why I've decided to flash and I'm happy to announce that I'm running 2.2 now with no issues on WiFi or Mobile APN. I'm just going through the process of re-downloading all my apps and re-applying all my settings.

Well I am still holding out it is only 2 more days
come the morning as i am writing this at 11:10pm, ill be calling them to find out what is going on, and then if nothing ill demand the complaint department to demand to them that this is extremely unacceptable that is it the 30th, and no one knows when it is being pushed out.

And I would not want to be a telus rep at the call center come nov 1, cause if that happens OHH WOW, ill be calling continually and saying telus is horrible, they lie to their own customers.

It would be one thing if that message was never on the site saying october, but still when THE WHOLE WORLD has the desire update and telus cant release it, it is just bullshit.

Honestly, the real reason why I did this now is because even if they release 2.2 now, I don't have faith in Telus releasing future updates. At least going this route I am sure to get updates in a more timely manner directly from HTC. Btw, I love moving my apps to the SD card. I have much more free space now. :)

So I took the plunge. Here is how I saw it. The other poster is right. If the phone works after 48 hours it's only going to stop for a few reasons. You drop it, you spill water on it, or something else. Other than that the build quality shouldn't be affected. Even if it is, it's a sanctioned HTC ROM and I doubt any of those boneheads at Telus will notice. Its an HTC Rom so it is hardly any different than normal. Just no Telus words. Other than that, it's the same thing. If something happens I will just upgrade to the new best thing. I doubt anything will. Everything seems to be running smooth and I am very happy so far. Can't wait to try out the new features. I suggest to all of you who have not done this yet, if they don't give it to you by the 1st of November. Just go this route. It's simple and if you get stuck send me a private message or post here and I will try to help you along.

Go 2.2!

P.S - Telus Sucks.

Update:

There is no way Telus will be able to tell it is not one of their roms. Only if they look for the cybertron voice thing and so on. My phone still says Telus at the notification bar. I am unsure how else they check but there is no way those dumb guys at the store can tell. I say go for it right now! Busy putting back my apps. Let me know if you guys have questions.

I will try root my Telus phone tomorrow! Do you have some advice for me? :P

Tlus is soooo ****ing slowww! Cant belive that!

I can't stick up for Telus because I'm just as frustrated as you, but this is why companies should play it safe and keep updates to QTRs instead of months...

For sure:

1. Backup your contacts to your google account

2. Write down a list of your installed programs you want to reinstall

3. Find a block of time where you can completely concentrate. 30 minutes should be plenty. Don't be scared.

4. Open this link:
Droid Den - Android Guide: How To Create a Gold Card - Droid Den

5. Follow the instructions. Find an extra Micro SD card you have laying around.

6. Make the goldcard, very simple process.

7. Before you continue, if you have HTC Sync installed, uninstall it and get the version from HTC. It will be under Telus Desire. Make sure you restart after install!

8. After this, follow these steps.
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html

9. I was recieving the 170 error which is no USB connected. If you receive this error I know how to fix it. What you want to do is boot your phone into regular mode. Start HTC Sync and start it on your phone. Not the actual sync part but just put it so they find each other. This will install every and all drivers for the phone. After completing this, turn off the phone and boot back into the menu in the link. Then run the RUU and sit back and relax. After that it is smooth sailing. If you run into any trouble feel free to write here. Going to bed now but will try to check in tomorrow.

Best of luck!

Even if they said a quarter I would still be pissed. The entire world but Canada has it. No reason to keep us waiting so I took the other route.

I'm giving them until November 1st before even entertaining the idea of RUU.

Nobody knows for sure if the Desire is going to get Gingerbread or not so I don't know how important future updates are going to be.

Plus there's a few people over at XDA that want this specific update so there might be something in here that the RUU from HTC is missing...

HTC phone call today.

Was told the first push was Oct 2, and some people in his office (in canada, amazing) got it on Oct 2, then was on hold because of the market issue. And it is googles choice to release the update. I was assured because telus wanted more security in the program it made the market have issues. Though i was also told if they have a deadline of Oct, they will have it pushed out over the OTA by the 31st.
AHHHHH i want to wait for the telus official update, since like ccrows said there has to be a reason people are waiting for the telus update.

What would be missing? I will keep an eye out but so far I am very happy I installed.

Well, I'm running Froyo now and I'm quite happy with the performance and features. I haven't had any of the problems that ppl here are talking about except for the mobile APN (which you just need to setup again for Telus) I highly doubt there are any benefits to waiting for the official carrier release vs the HTC RUU release other than the following:

- You don't void your warranty
- You can feel safe it won't bugger yer phone
- You can fly to the moon (wait scratch that, thats it :p)

Glad to see you decided to install Froyo. I had none of the problems others reported either. My mobile APN was already configured so I was pretty happy about that.

Enjoy Froyo!
