The tethering policy that we have held here at AF for a long time has now been lifted, as well as our approach to some potentially illegal content. After a long period of discussion between administration and the moderators, we're doing what we feel is best for the Android community and AF in general.

While we as a forum do NOT endorse nor encourage illegal or immoral activity (such as tethering against your TOS, call recording against state law, altering key phone identifiers against carrier policy, etc) - we will no longer blindly ban all conversations relating to such discussions on a site-wide basis. There are so many grey areas that it's simply impossible to continuously determine what is and isn't acceptable in a consistent manner without stifling conversation and muzzling freedom of speech. While AndroidForums.com technically "owns" the content posted on the site, each user is responsible for the lawfulness of their posts and we take no responsibility for what a user chooses to post or ask here.

We will no longer target tethering or other breach-of-TOS conversations on AF. Android related actions that may be illegal in some states (recording phone calls is the best example here) will also be left alone. We will, however, continue to target piracy, copyright infringement, and endorsement of hate crimes, etc etc.

So we can talk about it again?

(whew, i started 3 new threads today.... I need to go do something)

I think it is really going to boil down to our own morals. I mean if we teach someone to "take something that does not belong to them" then we are just as guilty as they are. It does not matter to me if you choose to "Tether" with out the appropriate accounts. I simply am not going to answer those types of questions.

My take is like this. I am paying for the service I have and I pay a good deal of money for that service. So by me showing someone how to get any part of the service for free is really just cheating myself. It's because of that kind of behavior that the cell phone companies charge so much in the first place. Every one want's something for nothing but very few take time to understand the true consequences of our actions.

Unlike rooting the phone which is an option I feel the companies should be giving to me. Rooting a phone is different in the aspect that you pay for the phone so you should be able to do as is with it. I have never used wifi tethering nor do I have any plans to do so.

If the forums isn't going to stand for piracy I don't see the difference in illegal wifi tethering. Anyway again I believe it will come down to your personal morals and what you feel is appropriate or not appropriate. As for me I see no difference in taking free wifi as I do in piracy.

I see and understand your position, and even if I wanted to go into how the cell phone companies are screwing you I would just say I agree with you in part. But I did want to bring up another "taboo" changing phone on cdma carriers, most companies will not let you run your own cell phone, which as you put you bought you should be able to take it with you.
