Help Text Messaging on this phone SUCKS

maw4bc

Well-Known Member
Seriously how can they not have a software fix for this text messaging problem?

Specifically:
1. When you gather hundreds to thousands of text the phone LAGS BAD, really bad, the default txt app will lag an outrageous amount, sometimes even clicking on a person brings up another person.

2. The phone sends txt (usually ones in draft) randomly. I have had multiple times where the txt is sent days even weeks later.

3. The phone will send a txt to THE WRONG PERSON. When I am sending out quotes to people and someone else is getting them, it doesn't show up on their message list or anything.

4. (goes with 1 really) Once you have a large amount of text it takes FOREVER, minutes, hours, to delete message threads.

It just seems completely unacceptable that there is not a solution to any of this mess. Some people would argue text to them is more important than phone calls on their phone. A phone shouldn't have that many problems with a BASIC function.

Sorry just had to vent. One of the happiest days of my EVO life was when my phone just randomly deleted all my text when it restarted. What I would give to be able to erase my text messages that quickly. :D

Have you tried Handcent? Free app and works very nicely.

Can't say I've experienced the issues you've reported with the stock messaging app.

I use the stock messenger app and have not had any of those problems. I send about 2k to 3000 texts a month. There is a rare occasion that I select one name/thread and another comes up, but its very rare. I have read that is a problem with Android, not the EVO specifically. Maybe go into the messenger and select settings and adjust it to save only, say, 150 texts per thread and maybe 10 to 20 mms, and select the box to automatically delete old texts. I have mine set something like that. No problems.

I have tried handcent and when you have a large amount of txt it will lag as well.

do you limit your text? Every person I know has an issue when their text amount starts going up.

I have an issue with this, I use my text as a reference to specific dates/times I send out certain things. I need to know what I sent out 4 months ago to people.

I don't know, its just frustrating that you have to limit something like that. Kind of like the battery issue. I shouldn't have to limit my phone to make my battery last more than 3 hours.

Not to bash or anything, but maybe it's because you have hundreds to a thousand plus messages or threads. That is kind of a crazy amount of threads to have in a messaging app. If it's messages and in the hundreds then it should be fine. Even thousands should be fine I think in one thread. But how many threads do you have and what is the amount among them threads. Should this phone be able to handle all those messages? Maybe but think about it. thousands of messages with several threads. Why even keep that many. a 3rd party app can be set to delete them when it gets to a certain number. might want to invest.

actually, I've never deleted any sms. I probably should. But I don't see any performance degradation from my thousands of messages...

This is a serious question: what phone, in your experience, DOESN'T lag when you are gathering hundreds of thousands of SMS messages? The number seems over the top, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Aside from gathering hundreds of thousands of messages (I am in the thousands, but not hundreds of thousands), I have used messaging since day one and never had an issue. I do prefer handcent visually, but the stock app has been just fine for me.

hundreds to thousands

see above, TO no OF.

My blackberry and my old iphone never had problems with lag due to large amounts of text.

Let's say, yes, there is going to be a lag with those amounts of data. It still shouldn't take so long to delete the huge threads. even the small ones take minutes. I have downloaded apps that you have to leave on OVERNIGHT to erase all your text messages. That is not normal for any phone.

What do you consdier small? I have deleted threads with a couple thousand texts and had no issues, thusly I think this might be your specific situation. FWIW I have never read of another person with this issue (not to say that there isn't another person having issues like this), which leads me to believe your generalization of the phone being horrible at sending texts is a bad one. I suspect there is soemthing going on at least at a software level, or perhaps even hardware level.

Let's be honest. If it took everyone OVERNIGHT to erase their texts, we would see much more complaints. I have my entire phone backup at 1am because it is generally on the charger by then and not in use. The nights that I have seen this happen, everything is backed up in less than five minutes, and should be far more actual data than your texts.

Now, let's attempt to figure out what's going on, because I think it's safe to say this is a fairly rare, if not unique, problem. Can you tell us more about your phone. How old is it. Hardware revision? Rooted? ROM you are using? If stock rom, is it Froyo at least? Apps you have installed? Free space? I am no guru, but for anyone to help you they will need to know these things (or more) to get you back on track.

I thought I would add that I just deleted a thread with 4238 messages (via handcent) that was from my girlfriend. It took all of two seconds. I have an app that will resotre them. Let's see how fast it is. I will report back. (By the way, I don't do this to mock you, just to show that this is most likely something going on with your phones specifically).

Restoring my messages will take longer. It is taking them from my SD card, where they are backed up each night, and placing them back onto the phone. It seems to do about 5 messages per second (rough estimate based on the progress bar and how fast the numbers fly by). I expect it to be done in about 3 minutes or so.

This is definitely not an issue specific to me.

Found those after a quick search.

I really don't think there is an answer out there on why this happens to so many people (and not other people) but it is definitely a problem.

I use launcher pro but that is the only thing I do on my phone that isn't "normal". no rooting, i use whatever came with the phone and updates that are sent out. It will take me forever to delete these text, and a lot of the time the programs will run over night and still not work. I have used so many different ones.

Yes, SMS backup & restore is the app I used. You still didn't really tell us what version of Android you are using (Menu>Settings>About Phone>Software Information). Also, what other apps do you have installed? Being that it does this for some and not others there is definitely some sort of software interference or hardware defect. This is the first time I heard of this (thanks for the links by the way), but I would imagine if this was a widely known issue, it would be better known (for a lack of a better way to say it I think I, or many others who frequent here, would have heard more about it). Have you tried taking the phone in to Sprint?

I think wanting to keep old texts is just fine. At the end of the day he is having an issue that shouldn't be an issue. I don't think his reasoning behind wanting to keep the texts should matter, personally. I do the same with emails. Unless they are junk mail, I never delete them.

I have the same issue as maw4bc

Specifically:
1. When you gather hundreds to thousands of text the phone LAGS BAD, really bad, the default txt app will lag an outrageous amount, sometimes even clicking on a person brings up another person.

My girlfriend is in Med school and I work 10-12 hrs a day, so texting is optimal. We easily send a thousand a week and i have to deal with the ridiculous lagging, unable to delete our large threads, and a 3-5 second delay in typing and appearing on screen. We have a current message thread of 2,694 that I've attempted to delete a dozen or so times. Everytime though the error force close/wait box pops up after 10 minutes or so. I love my Evo but this is rather elementary yes?

AHHH I could not agree more ! very frustrating ! I have actually called and reported this problem to them many times so hopefully we will have an update soon to fix this! Also, I saw in another post/forum that you mentioned the paste number into keypad frustration, another huge p.i.a. that is !!!!

Try going into settings and changing the limit capacity to 250 or something... As soon as I changed mine it cut down all my threads without having to delete them one by one, plus no freezing or force closing. It was like magic lol... Try it out and hope you have the same luck :)

Woohoo! Phone just deleted my 14,000 text messages out of no where. Got a text and they were just all gone. Last time it did this was when the phone frozen and had to be restarted. This time just vanished out of no where. Anyways, I couldn't be happier. Phone is running back to normal again.

I still can't understand why it will take HOURS to delete threads but you can wipe the phone in seconds with a full swipe. Or for that matter, have all your txt disappear out of the clear blue! Baffles me.

I've found that I can't delete large threads of text and still use the phone so anytime I need to do this I slimply do it prior to laying down for bed. When I wake up, voila, everything's all cleaned up. It would be nice if they could remedy this.

My really large threads (500-1000+) wouldn't even delete. It would freeze the phone and would have to restart it. Even when left over night. I even bought a million different apps that promised to do so and non worked.

Clear the cache for the app and move on from this topic. No sense in keeping 500 to 1000 text messages unless you are CEO of Google, Facebook, or Microsoft. Next....
